Dear Ms. Sol Vanzi and the staff of PHNO, I always enjoy reading your report direct from Philippines but why it is only limited to one or two reports per category. It could have been a lot better if you add some more interesting news. Am I asking too much? Well, I am just proud to have a nice homepage in the internet. Ms. Sol Vanzi, I tried to send E-mail directly to you but it was a failed delivery. My carrier said, the user is unknown. Anyway, thanks a lot and more power.

---------------
Sol Vanzi's reply:
We're very glad you enjoy readingour daily news reports.
There are several reasons why we only have one or two stories per category. The first is the time limitation on us volunteers involved in the daily production of this news service. As it is now, we each have to give several hours of our time to keep this news service going. I digest and write the stories in Manila. Lee post the stories to two web sites and Rey send them to a mailing list, a newsgroup and to the Pointcast Network.
Second, we are avoiding crowding our subscribers' e-mail with too many items per day.
But should there be any article or subject you would wish a story on, please let us know and we will effort to have that subject or story researched and written.
As to my e-mail address, it was a temporarily problem with webquest, which should nto last more than a few hours. Please try again.
Thank you for your continued support.

Sol Vanzi and the PHNO family.

PS from Rey: We take pride in providing you with news that are "precious and few" because that is what differentiates our serivces from the other online Filipino news services (which there are tons of). Sol picks up only those news items that she thinks will be of interest to majority of our readers. However, should you need more of them, there are a couple of websites that we highly recommend: Wayne and Maritess Johns' BALITA-L and Gary Mariano's BALITANG KABABAYAN . We suggest you check those sites out too.

Regards, Rey

It's always been a pleasure to read updated news from the Philippines. It could have been better if you give us more news about politics and the economy. It gives me happiness that every time I read that my country is on the right track for a stronger economy. I hope the voters from the Philippines could select their officials which is not based on popularity but vote the man a strong moral character and has the ability to lead the nation into the new millennium. And also a candidate which bring good image not only inside our country but to the whole world. I hope the people in the media could help the voters to select a good President. Thank you and more power.

Greetings from Seattle! You have an absolutely magnificent site. I'm glad that I can get up to date information about our beloved country. It's been 17 years since I left the Philippines. Would you mind getting an e-mail address for my old high school, Metro Manila College (Novaliches Academy)? I wonder if it's still operational. Of course, the location is Novaliches, Quezon City. My friends often tease me for my appetite in reading Pilipino romance book, watching Pilipino movies and reading Philippines news. They say I am corny and still a very pinoy in the real sense of the word. I am insatiable reader especially about politics and about what's going on in my country. I also love reading letters to the Editors in a news magazine because it is very gratifying that some intelligent readers can give comments about the news they read and that's a good check and balance so that the journalists know what the readers want. Congratulations for this website about Philippine headline News on Line. I hope that you can give us more about politics and the economy. And I am hoping that you are more aggressive in reporting real news.

We are happy to read news from home and very helpful to know what is going on specially the presidential aspirants and the daily dollar exchange. The Filipino Community in Melbourne Victoria is working so hard to raise funds for the Filipino community in Victoria specially the unemployed and the deprived. We have Philippine Princess of Victoria Quest ongoing every year. This year we have 10 candidates they are pretty and georgios. We are sending the winner to the Philippines as an ambassador after June 1998. We are also on full swing with the Centennial celebration. Mabuhay. Hope to get some friends and supporter through this info. love from melbourne. Eleonor and Laurie.

We will try and figure out how to publish all the names of the candidates for mayors and governors, congressmen and senators, or link up with a website that carries the list.

For your information, the candidates for mayor, vice mayor, governor and for other local offices will be known only in March, after the deadline for their filing of certificates of candidacy.

Your coverage of the upcoming Filipino election is the best I've found. Do you plan to print a rundown of vice-presidential candidates?

I just subscribed to newsflash yesterday. I got the first set of news this morning. I think what you guys are doing is simply great. I am a Filipino here in Russia teaching English. We really miss the Philippines and hearing news about the Philippines is a breath of fresh air. You guys are doing a great service to the Filipino community.

I just wanted to ask if my newsflash subscription also includes sports and entertainment news or do I have to subscribe through another address of yours? My friends and I love the PBA very much. Any news about what's happening is greatly appreciated. Si misis naman, mahilig sa kuwentong buhay about showbiz.

Again, just appreciate your service. God bless you.

Letters like yours make our volunteer work for newsflash all worth the effort and time. As you may have discovered by now, newsflash carries all the news about the Philippines: politics, sports (especially PBA, PBL and the new basketaball league Metroball or MBA), show business, news from our different provinces and towns, business and economy (peso-dollar rate and stock market every weekday) and travel and tourism.

Thank you and mabuhay!!

Sol Vanzi's reply
Hi there. We at Philippine Headline News Online follow what is in the news, and try our darndest to present a balanced reporting.

For the peso-dollar rates, we scan all the newspapers and compare them, because sometimes one paper only reports the lowest value of the peso for the day, while another would quote only the closing rate. What we do is quote the "weighted average" and then also the closing rate.

The same is true with our stock market reports; we do not do any window dressing, or put any icing to pretty-fy the economic picture. Just the facts, and a few quotes from people in the trade.

As to the predictions of doom, we stay away from that mostly because of limited space. WE'd rather tell you which world giant conglomerate opened a $300-million factory giving 1,000 jobs to our countrymen than one prophet of darkness whose predictions can only bring gloom and not solve anything.

An exception could be an IMF analysis which would be a different matter altogether because it is based on data and would give you a picture of what the financial world thinks. But mostly, we'd rather report the events. And if the events are good, that's better. Of course, we can't escape some bad news, like some reports we've published about factories closing, strikes, etc.

Thanks for your observation. And thank you for your patronage.

Sol
