Fame Game Design and innovation behind this year’s big winners

Department of Tourism Secretary Adrian Cristobal with KATHA awardees Department of Tourism Secretary Adrian Cristobal with KATHA awardees

MANILA, MAY 9, 2016 (MANILA BULLETIN) by Sol Vanzi April 24, 2016 - Hundreds of local and foreign buyers milled around exquisitely crafted products on display at the World Trade Center this week, joined by investors and inventors with big dreams woven around startup projects. The creative energy spilled over to the Walled City, Intramuros, which was launched as the hub for creative entrepreneurship.

Manila Fame 2016 was a big leap forward, held alongside two other events that bring attention to fresh directions of the Department of Trade and Industry: SLINGSHOT and Design Week Philippines. Taken together, the three activities from April 16 to 24 weave a joint effort that goes beyond creativity and entrepreneurship, embracing innovation technology and the surging startup community.

Excellence prevails

As in previous years, the most awaited moment was the announcement of KATHA Award winners; six gleaming statuettes were handed out by DTI Secretary Adrian Cristobal, Jr. in the following categories: Furniture, Home Décor, Fashion, Holiday Décor, and Gifts. In addition, there was recognition for Best Booth plus a Special Eco-Design Award for the product that best reflects this year’s focus on nature and the ecology.

Binhi, a furniture made entirely of rattan won Best Booth and Special Eco-Design

Grand winner

Very young-looking Ito Kish, whose company bears his name, was this year’s big winner, going home with trophies for Best Booth and the Special Eco-Design Award for his furniture line “Binhi,” made entirely of rattan.

Now considered one of the most successful furniture designers in the country, Kish counts the Manila Polo Club and the exclusive jet-set resort Amanpulo among his clients, despite being so new in the industry. Since his first furniture line launch in 2012, he has won several prestigious awards for unique pieces using natural materials echoing clean Oriental lines.

The phenomenal success of Kish is benefiting several sectors, among them rattan farmers, craftsmen, and entire communities dependent on the gathering of materials from the wild. The large demand for his woven rattan pieces has resulted in the revival of the almost-lost craft of solihiya or rattan weaving, which barrio folk now excel in after a few weeks of training.

Celia Jiao’s Scherma Console Table

Best furniture design

Artist Celia Jiao chose metal wire woven into fabric as the basic material for the Scherma Console Table, which can withstand structural stress through the use of spot welding and weaving techniques she herself developed. The wire mesh she produced can tolerate a wide range of design requirements.

The art of metal weaving is the result of years of learning and mastering the craft. With minimal metal handling and seamless connections, the natural aesthetic qualities of the material are retained and have become the trademark of her designs. Each of her pieces is a unique, hand-woven product that brings the artisan’s personal touch into any living space.

Henesius floor lamp

Home décor perfectionist

It came as no surprise that veteran designer Vito Selma’s Henesius Floor Lamp copped the award for Best Product Design for Home Décor. Formally trained in design in the US and Europe, Selma is noted for craftsmanship and keen attention to detail.

His works have been published in Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, Architectural Digest, and Living Australia. Award-winning and famous in his field, Selma continues to strive to present something new and innovative.

Buwana clutch purse and Adlaw necklace

Fashion accessories

Malou del Rosario designed the award-winning Adlaw Necklace and Buwana Clutch for the fashion accessory brand Joanique. Every piece she designs is a tangible experience of elegance, versatility of style, and a reflection of the artist’s soul.

Casa Mercedes fans

Holiday décor and gifts

After winning the award, Monchet Olives of Casa Mercedes Incorporated celebrated the firm’s 60 years of fan making in the Philippines

The oldest fan maker in the country specializes in unique Filipino fabrics accentuated with unique embellishments.
