NEWS FEATURE: I'D  RATHER  BE  FIRST  LADY  THAN  SENATOR - KORINA

BAYOMBONG, NUEVA VIZCAYA, AUGUST 10, 2009
(PHILIPPINE STAR) By Charlie Lagasca - Popular broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez said she would rather be first lady than senator.

Korina’s fiancé, Sen. Manuel Roxas II, is the likely standard bearer of the Liberal Party in next year’s national elections.

“It is not my wish to be senator. I would prefer being first lady,” Korina said partly in jest here.

She also hinted at leaving broadcasting if Roxas is elected president.

The veteran broadcaster, together with Roxas’ Liberal partymate Sen. Rodolfo Biazon, was here yesterday as guest of various groups of indigenous communities in their celebration of the World’s Indigenous People’s Day held at Saint Mary’s University.

“As a journalist for (more than) 20 years I came to note the needs not only of the indigenous communities but also the general sentiments of ordinary Filipinos like me,” said Sanchez, who was mobbed like a movie celebrity.

“It would be enough for me that the people make the right choice for president by seeing his background or track record,” she said in a speech.

“At least, if they choose Mar for president, they will not only get him, they will get me as a bonus. It’s just like a buy one/take one scenario,” she said.

Korina also confirmed that she and Roxas would get married before the May elections, but she didn’t give details.

“We will be making a definite announcement on this matter in the coming days,” she said.

Korina described Roxas as a principled person, with no vices: “He doesn’t smoke, he doesn’t drink, he doesn’t gamble, he’s not a womanizer, and most importantly, he doesn’t enrich himself in office.”
