GAME  SHOW  SURPRISE  GIFTS:  6  OFWS  GET  HOUSES,  LOTS  FROM  SEN.  VILLAR

MANILA, JULY 26, 2009
(STAR) Their lives have been difficult for as long as they can remember. Orphaned at a young age, they were left to fend for themselves while growing up. When they had their own families, they had to leave and work abroad to support their loved ones.

But yesterday, they finally got something good.

Six overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who tried their luck in a noontime game show yesterday received surprise gifts from Sen. Manuel Villar Jr. — a house and lot for each of them.

The six winners were Jenny Chan of Manila; Rosemarie Jaca and Hazel Vicente of Romblon; Joanne Sonbise of Parañaque; Sarah Felecio of Negros Occidental; and Marnelli Recabar of Iloilo.

Villar, a presidential aspirant and standard bearer of the Nacionalista Party, was invited to the ABS-CBN show “Wowowee” since he has been known to grant assistance to OFWs.

Villar has always said that OFWs are close to his heart because they have been his first clients in his real estate business. He has witnessed how important it was for OFWs to own their own house and lot as a reward for all the hard work and sacrifice they endured abroad.

The show became emotionally charged when the six OFWs recounted their bitter and painful experiences, particularly the time when they were abandoned by their parents and when they had to be separated from their loved ones to work abroad.

Even Villar and his daughter Camille, who accompanied him to the show, were teary-eyed while listening to the tales of the OFWs.

At one point in the show, before the segment “Willie of Fortune” ended, host Willie Revillame asked Villar if he was willing to grant him a personal favor, which was to give each of the contestants a house and lot.

The contestants cried and embraced Villar when he agreed.

“I have always been saying that if we want to help, it should be now,” the senator said.

It was also at Wowowee that Sen. Manuel Roxas II and broadcaster Korina Sanchez announced their engagement.

Roxas, who has also formally declared his presidential bid and who heads the Liberal Party, gave away a “padyak” or a bicycle with sidecar (his trademark in his political ad) to a contestant during the show. – Aurea Calica
