NO  WHISTLES  REQUIRED  IN  ALL-DEAF  BASKETBALL  LEAGUE

MANILA, OCTOBER 26, 2007
(STAR) By Perseus Echeminada Friday, October 26, 2007 An all-deaf basketball tournament held recently at a school campus in Quezon City gave new meaning to the phrase “resounding success.”

Instead of the usual applause and roars of the crowd heard during basketball games, there was only the sound of the bouncing ball, waving of hands and other silent signs of excitement at the Colegio de San Lorenzo Ruiz when the tournament got underway before a crowd of deaf students last Oct. 21 at the school campus along Commonwealth Avenue.

Council majority leader Ariel Inton was invited to make the ceremonial toss at the tournament organized by Philippine Deaf Life and Sports Club Inc. (PDLSCI).

“There was no applause, only waving of hands and the sound of the basketball can be heard during the games,” Inton said.

He said tournament organizer Stevenson Tee recruited deaf but physically fit students and trained them to play baseball, basketball and track and field.

Inton said after a series of training Tee organized the Philippine Deaf Basketball League, which will host a tournament among deaf athletes all over the country.

He said what caught his attention was the crowd and the cheering squads also composed of deaf students who all showed skill in cheering their teams minus the usual yelling and other standard exhortations.

“There was silence but you can feel the high emotions among the crowd, who waved their hands and made signs to cheer on their team during play,” Inton said.

He said the city government under the stewardship of Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has provided the necessary moral and material support to the tournament by giving trophies to the winners.

Inton said city hall is supportive of all sports development programs particularly among aspiring athletes in the city.

“The recently concluded all-deaf basketball tournament proved that hearing and other impairment certainly does not impede the promotion of camaraderie and sportsmanship,” Inton said.
