THE  'BALUT'  MEETS  ITS  MATCH  IN  ANDREW  ZIMMERN

MANILA, SEPTEMBER 3, 2007
(STAR) By Joseph O. Cortes Thursday, August 30, 2007 If you’re not busy on Sept. 19, stay home and watch Bizarre Foods on Discovery Travel and Living at 10 p.m.. Program host Andrew Zimmern downs one balut after another in an episode that features some of the weirdest foods in the Philippines.

And yes, the balut has met its match.

“Balut has a reputation for being one of the world’s sort of like most mysterious and unusual foods,” says Zimmern in a recent long distance conference call interview with media from around the world. “ I found it actually quite ordinary in the sense that it tasted like a hard-boiled egg with roasted duck inside of it. I really quite enjoyed it. It was surprisingly good in the sense that I was prepared for it to be stranger to my palate than it really was.”

And the balut was just one of the tasty Pinoy treats Zimmern tried in the Philippines. In Pampanga, he tried stuffed frog and sautéed crickets, while at the popular Balaw-Balaw Restaurant in Angono, Rizal, he had a taste of uok, sautéed giant local worms harvested from falled trees. And if those weren’t enough, he also headed off to Palawan to sample still another local worm dish, this time freshly pulled out of mangrove branches and eaten fresh with just a side of salt on the spot.

If you think Zimmern ate too much in the Philippines, then you should follow Bizarre Foods. The show takes him to Morocco, Spain, Equador, New York City, the United Kingdom, the Gulf Coast, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico, Alaska, Taiwan, and Vietnam. And yes, he ate everything that was served to him at each stop.

One of the most versatile and knowledgeable personalities in the food world, Andrew Zimmern is a food writer, dining critic, radio talk show host, TV personality, chef and teacher. Writing for many national magazines and publications, Andrew has received The American Society of Professional Journalists Page One Award.

Bizarre Foods starts airing on Discovery Travel and Living on Sept. 5, 10 p.m., with an encore broadcast of the first episode on Sept. 8 at 11 p.m. Succeeding episodes are on Wednesdays at 10 p.m., with encores on Saturdays at 11 p.m.
