MANILA, JUNE 22, 2007
(STAR) By the GO NEGOSYO team - Aside from narrow coastlines, limestone plateaus and coastal plains, the Queen City of the South also proudly rears a shopping mecca that blends in with Cebu’s highly urbanized metropolitan core.

The Gaisano family started fostering retail operations in 1982 with the Vicsal Development Corp. (VICSAL). Its inception was through the vision of Victor Gaisano, a seasoned retailer and one of the revered members of the Gaisano family. The Gaisanos owned and managed the former White Gold Department Store, the first department store and supermarket business in Cebu. White Gold lasted for 30 years and became the largest of its kind since its establishment in 1949.

Through the leadership of Jack Gaisano, president and director of VICSAL, the company has rapidly grown into a multitude of successful ventures. VICSAL also penetrated the world of real estate development, travel agency, stock brokerage at the Philippine Stock Exchange, banking and other financial services.

At present, VICSAL operates six department stores with supermarkets like the Super Metro Mandaue, Metro Ayala Center, Metro Legaspi, Metro Lucena, Metro Market Market and the Metro Gaisano Colon in Cebu.

“Our endeavors lean towards an image of quality and affordability because Filipinos love to spend less and get more than they bargain for,” Jack said. “That’s why we managed to create ‘a metropolis of our own’ without stealing from our customers’ pockets.”

Situated along the oldest center commercial district in downtown Cebu City, the Metro Gaisano is now Cebu’s premier shopping haven, testified by the customer traffic in the downtown area. Six floors of exciting purchases within everyone’s means, from men’s wear, pharmacy, jewelry, ladies’ wear, cosmetics, toys, school supplies, recreational areas, among others, drove Cebuanos into frenzy.

“People come to us because in Gaisano, everyday is mega sale,” he proudly exclaimed.

Successfully implementing a “people-centered” business that shuns the typical mall service that only caters to the select high-end market, Jack’s leadership made it possible to attract all, regardless of stature, for a gratifying shopping experience.

Jack now holds major responsibilities as he further uplifts his family’s living legacy. Aside from manning the Development Corp., Jack is also the president of Victoria Asian Corp., Securities and Stock Brokerage, Metro Value Ventures Inc., Tabok Properties, Value Shop Market Market Inc., Valueshop Stores, Inc. and Metro Legaspi Development Corp. He’s also the director of Grand Holidays Inc. and the Pacific Mall Corp.

“A chance for luxury is not the birthright of a few,” Jack said. “It’s a shot handed out by those who have more for those who have less.”

For his remarkable feat in helping build a formidable Cebu commercial arena that refutes class discrimination and his family’s significant addition to Cebu’s roster of raging businesses, Jack Gaisano will be cited as one of the most inspiring Cebuano entrepreneurs to be awarded by the Philippine Center of Entrepreneurship at the Go Negosyo Entrepreneurship Conference. The conference is the latest leg of the continuing Go Negosyo campaign spearheaded by Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III and chaired by Jay Aldeguer, owner of Island Souvenirs, slated at the Cebu International Convention Center. It is also the first stop of the Go Negosyo Caravan, which brings Go Negosyo forums and expositions to key cities outside Metro Manila.

As part of the month-long celebration of the Cebu Business Month, the Go Negosyo Entrepreneurship Conference is in partnership with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) through the support of CCCI president Francis Monera and Consul Sam Chioson.
