GREENPEACE SHIP 'MY ESPERANZA' VISITING APO ISLAND IN NEGROS ORIENTAL
 

VIA INTERNET, AUGUST 29, 2006 The Greenpeace ship MY Esperanza is visiting Apo Island Marine Reserve (a model community-managed marine reserve) in Dauin, Negros Oriental on August 29 and 30, 2006 as part of its global tour Defending our Oceans. (Full schedule of visit at the bottom.)

This tour, which started with an anti-whaling expedition in the Southern Oceans in November 2005, aims to expose reveal the beauty of our oceans, expose the crises that they face, and propose solutions, such as marine reserves, which will ensure that the future of our seas.

The MY Esperanza arrived in the Philippines, considered by scientists as the global epicenter of marine biodiversity, last 15 August 2006. The Esperanza's work in the Philippines focuses on marine pollution, starting with a plastic waste survey of Manila Bay, an assessment of the initial impacts of the Guimaras oil spill, and a campaign with local Bicol communities against Lafayette mining in Rapu Rapu island.

VISIT OF THE ESPERANZA TO DAUIN, NEGROS ORIENTAL

This is a good opportunity for FEATURE STORIES on Dauin's marine reserves and the world-famous Apo Island, the Greenpeace ship Esperanza's Defending our Oceans Campaigns, and the celebrities who have lent their support to this campaign.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 29

10:00 AM - The MY Esperanza arrives in Dauin and anchors by the coast. It will be welcomed by the mayor, and met by celebrities Angel Aquino and Amanda Griffin who are joining Greenpeace's campaign to defend the oceans.

Media is invited to attend the programme prepared by the local government, interview resource persons and personalities, as well as participate in snorkelling activities.

Greenpeace will transport media to and from Dumaguete and Dauin Meeting place: Lab-as, 201 Flores Avenue, Piapi beach, Dumaguete City . Meeting time: 8:45 to 9:00 AM

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30

9:00 AM - The MY Esperanza will proceed to Apo Island and anchor nearby. The island's community has prepared a program for the Esperanza crew, Dauin's Mayor, and visiting scientists from Silliman University.

Media is invited to the join transit via the Esperanza and participate in the program and snorkelling activities.
