MMDA  GEARS  UP  FOR  METRO  SPRUCE-UP  MAKEOVER

MANILA, APRIL 1, 2006 (STAR) By Michael Punongbayan - Following the success of the Investor’s Corridor Project which rehabilitated and spruced up roads and streets leading to and from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) , the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is now gearing up for a bigger project intended to brighten up unsightly areas all over the metropolis.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando said the agency’s "Metro Gwapo" program will soon be launched to give the metropolis a "face lift."

The pat on the back he received from President Arroyo for doing an outstanding job in sprucing up NAIA in order to attract tourists and prospective investors has apparently inspired him into further improving Metro Manila’s thoroughfares.

Fernando said the agency is going full blast with the Metro Gwapo program as preparations are underway to undertake a total makeover of areas initially in the cities of Parañaque, Manila, Pasay and Quezon City.

Mrs. Arroyo reportedly lauded the MMDA’s success in its Investor’s Corridor Project during an inspection tour of links and arterial roads leading to the NAIA Terminal 3 at the Villamor Airbase in Pasay City last week.

During the inspection tour, the President approved Fernando’s proposed rotunda intersection system at Andrews Avenue and Manlunas Aveue of the NAIA Terminal 3 to ensure smooth vehicular traffic flow in the area.

Fernando has come up with slogans on education and enforcement of rules and regulations for dissemination to residents of Metro Manila on how to conduct themselves properly to ensure the success of the Metro Gwapo project.

These include Walang Sagabal: Lansangan ay Ligtas, Mabilis; Walang Nakakainis; Walang Kalat; Walang Pook na Bulok: Maganda, Hindi Nakakatakot; Walang Sakit-Hangin, Tubig at Pagkain ay Malinis; Walang Mabaho: Kanal at Sapa ay Malinis; Walang Bastos: May Urbanidad; Hindi Nakakasakit ng Kapwa; and Kaisa: The Metro Way.

"This is a good opportunity to showcase our country and there is no better opportunity for us to do so than to provide our full support to this activity," Fernando said.

Again showcasing his amusing slogans in his battlecries, he noted that "Kung Metro Gwapo, Tao ay Ganado, Kung Metro Gwapo, Tayong Lahat ay Nagiging Gwapo."
