CHINA EYES CEBU AS PRIME TOURIST DESTINATION
MANILA, December 8, 2004 (STAR) C‘EST CEBU By Honey Jarque Loop - Great possibilities in enhancing the many aspects of life of the Cebuanos knocked once more at the official doors of Cebu, which is forever eager to adopt meaningful exchanges for the betterment of its people, with the recent visit of Wu Guanzheng, a member of the standing committee of the political bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. Wu led a seven-man official delegation of the Communist Party of China, together with a 60-member party from the Chinese political bureau. The other members of the team were Minister Wang Jiarui of the International Department of the Central Committee, Deputy Secretary Zhang Shuitian of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, Secretary General Gan Yisheng of the Standing Committee of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and Wu Jupiz, deputy secretary of the Oinghai Provincial Committee of the CPC.
Vice Governor Gregorio Sanchez led provincial and local officials in welcoming the visitors upon their arrival at the Mactan International Airport.
The successful and ready-to-mean business visit exchanged views on issues of common concern, focused on opportunities for trade and commerce and promoted Cebu as a tourist destination for the ever-growing number of travelers from the Peoples’ Republic of China. It likewise increased understanding, enhanced cooperation and strengthened friendship between the two countries.
On the last evening of the three-day official mission, a formal sit-down dinner was jointly hosted by the island’s provincial government and the Cebu Filipino Chinese United Community at the Grand Ballroom of the Mactan Shangri-La Island Resort. The high point of the celebration was a most applauded cultural presentation by the renowned Sandiego Dance Group and an exquisite fashion show that showcased Philippine fabrics, like the piña and jusi, by Cebu’s foremost designer, Philip Rodriguez, which drew oohs and aahs.
Among the guests where Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, Lapu Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza and his wife Paz, Honorary Consul of Belgium Enrique Benedicto and his wife Tina, city tourism commissioner Joseph Gaisano, Arts Council president Petite Garcia, patroness of the arts Elvira Luym and Marissa Fernan of SM City Cebu.
