RIOS ON FIGHT VERSUS MANNY: IT'S MY TIME! / MANNY'S TRAINING SET AT A NEW GYM IN TORIL, DAVAO
MANILA, JULY 15, 2013 (PHILSTAR) By Dino Maragay - After a long wait, Brandon Rios said he’s more than ready to catapult himself to the top of the boxing world and into national consciousness.
After anxiously waiting for years for a chance to mix it up with the biggest names in the sport, Rios finally got the opportunity of a lifetime. The Mexican-American banger is set to tangle with Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 10 in Macau.
In an interview with ringtv.com’s Lem Satterfield, Rios once again vowed to emerge triumphant against Pacquiao and usher in a new era in boxing.
“Like I’ve been telling everybody, it’s my time. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. I’ve been promised Pacquiao or [Juan Manuel] Marquez, Marquez or Pacquiao for the longest time,” said Rios, whose resume includes victories over Urbano Antillon and Mike Alvarado – names who don’t even come close to Pacquiao in terms of worldwide stardom.
Adding Pacquiao to the list is a great motivation for Rios to shoot for the win.
“Now, I’ve got Pacquiao, and I’m going to take this opportunity to go out and to dominate in every way that I can to come out victorious,” he added.
A former world champion at light welterweight, Rios will move up to meet Pacquiao at the welterweight division. He said he’s currently at 155 pounds, and going down to 147 won’t be a concern once he starts hard training.
“I’ve been in the gym, just not going too crazy, but just keeping up with the momentum and keeping myself loose so that it won’t be too difficult when I start the really hard training camp,” said Rios, who is planning to start camp with trainer Robert Garcia three months before the fight.
“Getting down to 147 will not be that hard for me this time. I’m going to make weight comfortably. Once I start training really, really hard, and start eating right, the weight will come right off,” he added.
Rios said he’s expecting the best Pacquiao ever, and promised to face the Filipino boxing icon in tip-top condition as well.
“I’ll be ready. Like I’ve told everybody before. It could be a fight in his backyard, I don’t give a [expletive]. As long as I have an opponent in front of me, I’ll be ready,” he said.

Pacquiao training set in new Toril gymnasium By Roy Luarca Philippine Daily Inquirer 11:13 pm | Monday, June 3rd, 2013
A NEW gym bearing his name is the likely venue for Manny Pacquiao’s early training in his comeback fight against Mexican Brandon Rios on Nov. 24 in Macau.
The yet to be inaugurated MP Boxing Gym, built by Filipino trainer Nonoy Neri with assistance from the eight-division world champion, was given the green light by Pacquiao himself when he visited the 600-square meter facility in Toril District, Davao City, last week.
Neri, who doubles as Pacquiao’s personal cook during his training camps, told the Inquirer yesterday that Sarangani’s lone representative was impressed with the gym, which boasts two rings, complete boxing equipment and is quite secluded. To top it all, the gym has an air-conditioned room exclusively for Pacquiao.
According to Neri, Pacquiao wants to start his preparations for Rios (31 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw, 23 KOs) in September either in Toril or in Gen. Santos City.
Neri hooked up with Pacquiao in GenSan yesterday and was impressed with the physical condition of the three-time Fighter of the Year, who is aiming to rebound from a sixth round knockout loss to Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez last December.
“He (Pacquiao) appears to be lighter and in much better shape than before,” Neri said. “Maybe it’s because he sleeps early now and plays basketball almost everyday.”
Meanwhile, boxing promoter Rex Wakee Salud told the Inquirer yesterday that the Rios fight is sure to make “everybody happy, because no one will dare to run.” He said an impressive win by Pacquiao will be his pass ticket for a fifth bout with Marquez.
