PACMAN VS MOSLEY MAY 7: ROACH STARTS PACQUIAO TRAINING

MANILA, MARCH 8, 2011 (BULLETIN) By NICK GIONGCO — Freddie Roach arrives Tuesday morning to start the eight-week build-up for Manny Pacquiao’s May 7 showdown with Shane Mosley in Las Vegas.

Roach will be joined by super-welterweight Shawn Porter and lightweight David Rodela, who will serve as Pacquiao’s sparring partners, and world super-lightweight champion Amir Khan on a Philippine Airlines flight from Los Angeles.

Joe Ramos, one of Pacquiao’s advisers, said the pound-for-pound king will work out this week before he and Roach proceed to Baguio City on Sunday.

“We are looking at a gym on Jupiter Street in Makati or the Elorde Gym in Quezon City,” said Ramos.

Last week, Pacquiao engaged in roadwork, basketball and gym work under the supervision of Buboy Fernandez, who takes care of Pacquiao’s conditioning whenever Roach is not around.

Khan, who has a fight scheduled on April 16 in England, is also coming over because he is also being trained by Roach.

Pacquiao and Roach are staying in Baguio City until the second week of April before Roach and Khan fly to England, while Pacquiao goes to Los Angeles for the crucial phase of the training.

Ramos said Roach will miss four or five days of Pacquiao’s training at the Wild Card but guarantees those left behind will took good care of the fighter.

This pool sensation became the third Filipino in eight years to rule the WPA World 8-Ball Championship, crushing the Netherlands’ Neils Feijen, 10-3, for the 2011 crown at the Fujairah Exhibition Center in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates last Feb. 26.

A multi-titled veteran in the international billiards scene, Orcollo won the gold in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. He boasts an extensive resume that includes championships in the 2006 Open 9-Ball World Championship Bar Table Tournament in Oroville, California, and the 2006 US Bar Box-8 Ball Title in Nevada.

Orcollo's brilliance in the sport has earned him the monicker “The Philippines' Money-game King.”

He started playing billiards at the age of 8 at the house of his grandfather in Surigao Del Sur, often sneaking out at night to test his skills.

Orcollo has recently been named by the Philippine Sportswriters Association as one of the Athletes of the Year for 2010.
