WORD  WAR  BETWEEN  ROACH  AND  DELA  JOYA

MANILA,
OCTOBER 4, 2008
(STAR) By Abac Cordero - Oscar dela Hoya said he’s slowing down on his weight loss. But he’s not slowing down on his ongoing word war with Freddie Roach.

Dela Hoya told The Sweet Science yesterday while Roach worked his corner in his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year there are things that the two-time Trainer of the Year doesn’t know about him.

“He knows my training, knows my training regimen, but he doesn’t know everything,” Dela Hoya was quoted as saying.

The flamboyant champion of six different weight classes did not hide his disappointment over Roach’s previous statement that at 35 he “couldn’t pull the trigger anymore.”

Dela Hoya threw a shot at Roach. “I chose Roach (for the Mayweather fight) to be aggressive. My thought was to be aggressive with Mayweather. That was a big mistake, the incorrect strategy.

“The strategy Freddie had was the incorrect one,” said Dela Hoya who of course lost to Mayweather. A rematch was in the works when the latter announced his retirement.

Roach had nothing against Dela Hoya during the second leg of the promotional tour for the Dec. 6 “Dream Match” between his former ward and his favorite boxer, Manny Pacquiao.

But he had something to say against Nacho Beristain, who will man Dela Hoya’s corner for the Pacquiao fight.

“Beristain joined for the money and to give water to Oscar,” Roach was quoted by Mexican paper Esto as saying.

Beristain, the trainer of 16 world champions, including the Marquez brothers Juan Manuel and Rafael, said he’s merely doing his job as a trainer when he agreed to be with Dela Hoya.

Dela Hoya said he was at 150 pounds the other day although he was at 152 to 153 pounds when he and Pacquiao met the press in Chicago for the second part of the promo tour.

Roach said working with Dela Hoya gives him everything he needs to know to help Pacquiao win the big fight.

But he won’t elaborate. “I can tell you closer to the fight, when it won’t matter for him,” he said,” he told The Sweet Science.
