WEIGHT  NO  BIG  DEAL  FOR  MARQUEZ

MANILA, FEBRUARY 18, 2008
(STAR) By Abac Cordero - Making the weight for his March 15 rematch with Manny Pacquiao is definitely the least of Juan Manuel Marquez’ worries.

The smile on his face as he tipped the scales in Mexico one month before the Las Vegas showdown with the Pinoy superstar says it all.

Before a representative from the World Boxing Council, the Mexican super-featherweight champion was weighed at 132 .38 lbs.

It’s just two pounds and a fraction over the limit of 130 pounds. And with 26 days before the fight, Marquez is definitely out of trouble.

Esto, a Mexican paper based in Los Angeles, posted a photo of Marquez yesterday. He was smiling as he tipped the scales.

The weigh-in was held according to WBC rules, which gives fighters a certain limit one month before a scheduled bout.

In this case, a super-featherweight title bout at 130, both boxers cannot weigh more than 140 lbs a month before.

Pacquiao also underwent a medical, and was weighed last Thursday somewhere in San Pedro, California.

“There’s no problem with his weight, and healthwise, Manny is in excellent shape,” said Pacquiao’s buddy, Winchell Campos.

But that’s all to it, and nothing more as to how much Pacquiao weighed heading into yet another big fight.

Pacquiao reportedly weighed very close to 140 lbs when he reported for training in LA last Jan. 16.

And the latest clue was that he weighed 136 to 138 lbs.

Pacquiao may be fighting as a super-featherweight for the last time, as he plans to move up to the lightweight (135 lbs) division.

Pacquiao had great difficulty making 130 for his fight against Marco Antonio Barrera last October.

A similar problem is the last thing he needs against Marquez.
