ODDS  ON  PACMAN  IN  EARLY  ONLINE  BETTING

MANILA, DECEMBER 19, 2007
(STAR) By Abac Cordero - As the excitement slowly builds up for the big rematch, Manny Pacquiao is slowly building up his edge against Juan Manuel Marquez.

One of the countless online betting stations in the US, www.5dimes.com, has placed the 29-year-old Filipino as the early odds-on favorite against the 34-year-old Mexican.

Pacquiao, who has said many times before that he doesn’t care about the odds, was tagged at -140 (a $140 bet only wins $100) while Marquez was at +110 (a $100 bet wins ($110).

“I don’t believe in the odds. In the ring, it’s only between you and your opponent,” said Pacquiao, a 3-1 favorite against Marco Antonio Barrera whom he defeated unanimously last October.

The last time Pacquiao climbed the ring as the big underdog was in 2003 against Barrera in San Antonio.

An 11th round victory for Pacquiao, however, changed everything.

The odds are on a daily basis, but in the case of Pacquiao, they only grow bigger as the fight nears.

Pacquiao is scheduled to hold a press conference this afternoon at the Crowne Plaza in Ortigas, and should be joined by his promoter, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, or even trainer Freddie Roach.

Arum and Roach flew into town three days ago to attend Pacquiao’s birthday bash in Gen. Santos City.

There’s no word yet from the Pacquiao camp if the boxer would join Arum in the trip back to the US. A Dec. 20 press conference featuring Pacquiao and Marquez has been set in Los Angeles.

But last-minute changes come often as far as Pacquiao’s schedules are concerned.

Meanwhile, Edwin Valero, the sensational knockout artist from Venezuela, kept firing away at Pacquiao, just days after stretching his unbeaten record of 22 straight knockouts.

For Valero, Pacquiao has chosen to fight Marquez because the Filipino is afraid of him.

“Pacquiao is afraid. He is afraid of me. I know this. When I hit Pacquiao, he will go down and he will not get up,” Valero told Michael Marley of boxingconfidential.com.

And Roach?

“Freddie Roach is even more afraid of me than Manny is. Freddie Roach is super afraid of me of me!”
