PRESIDENT  FAILS  TO  CITE  RP  SPORTS  IN  SONA

MANILA, JULY 24, 2007
(STAR) By Abac Cordero - While the Chief Executive talked about development in agriculture, education and infrastructure, cheaper medicine and the fight against terrorism, among others, there was no mention of the Filipino athletes.

In last year’s SONA at Batasang Pambansa, the President hailed the Filipino athletes who won the overall crown in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, and those who scaled Mt. Everest.

Then, she saluted boxer Manny Pacquiao for his shining exploits overseas. The 28-year-old boxer drew a big applause from the crowd.

“We are a great people. We scaled the heights of Mt. Everest. We dominated the Southeast Asian Games. And of course, we punched our way to triumph in the boxing world,” she said in 2006.

This time, the President missed the fact that the Filipino athletes will defend the SEA Games overall title in Thailand in December, and that the Philippines is facing the 2008 Beijing Olympics with great hope.

She failed to mention the achievements of the Filipinos who won four gold medals in the 2006 Doha Asian Games. It was the best finish for the Philippines in the Asian Games in more than 40 years.

That three Filipinas made history by scaling Mt. Everest a few months back also escaped the attention of the President.

While there were victories by Manny Pacquiao or Boom Boom Bautista, the President missed honoring boxers Florante Condes and Nonito Donaire who became world champions just two weeks ago.

All these shining moments in sports had no place in yesterday’s SONA.
