DOMINION  REPUBLIC'S  GUZMAN  INSISTS  PACMAN  PERFECT  FOR  EPIC  BRAWL

MANILA, JUNE 21, 2007
(STAR) By Abac Cordero - Joan Guzman, the undefeated fighter from the Dominican Republic, will never run out of reasons why he remains the best fight there is for Manny Pacquiao these days.

“Pacquiao is perfect for me. That’s I like – a guy who is going to bring it (the fight). I truly believe that his style and mine make for a great fight,” said the reigning WBO champion in the 130-lb division.

Then he likened a possible fight with Pacquiao to some of the greatest in the history of the sport.

“Leonard and Duran. Ali and Frazier. The reason that these fights were so great and have lasted the test of time is that they were tremendous fighters but they all had distinct styles,” said the boxer nicknamed “Little Tyson.”

He also told boxingtalk.com that he’s been seeking a fight with Pacquiao for quite some time now.

“I have wanted to fight Manny Pacquiao for a long time now. And I am willing to fight him anytime and anywhere. This is the fight that needs to happen,” he said.

As it is, Guzman stands behind Mexico’s Humberto Soto as Pacquiao’s possible opponent. But that would surely change if Top Rank and Golden Boy, which is disputing the promotional rights over the Pinoy superstar, come to terms.

Because if these two promotional outfits agree to settle their differences, Pacquiao might just end up fighting Golden Boy stars Juan Manuel Marquez, the reigning WBC champion, or Marco Antonio Barrera, the deposed champion.

Both Marquez and Barrera are aching for a rematch with Pacquiao, but their ties with Golden Boy have kept the multi-million-dollar rematch from happening. Top Rank and Golden Boy are now in the thick of a mediation process.

Guzman’s manager, Jose Nunez, has other things in mind though.

“I think it’s a fight that will get done. And I know Bob (Arum) wants to make this fight happen. He and his company are all about putting it on the best fights out there. I also know Pacquiao being the type of champion he is wants to fight the best.

“I truly believe the only ones who don’t wan to see this fight take place are advisors that Pacquiao has, who are looking out for their best interest,” said Nunez who did not name names.

It was reported, however, that Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach and adviser Mike KOncz are the ones against a Guzman fight, saying that the undefeated boxer is dangerous because of his “fast feet and faster hands.”
