UST  TIGERS  IS  UAAP  OVERALL  CHAMP

MANILA, March 9, 2006
(STAR) University of Santo Tomas received the biggest trophy of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) in last night’s Annual Awards, the umpteenth time the Tigers emerged overall champion of the 68-year-old league.

The Tigers won titles in eight of the 26 events on the UAAP calendar and finished second also in eight to again run away with the general championship with 302 points.

University of the Philippines (UP) took over as second in the general standings, though it was a close one over De La Salle.

UP was champion in four events, one less than De La Salle, but placed second in four and third in seven events to snatch runner-up honors with 244 points. De La Salle had three second-place and six third-place finishes to highlight its 234-point output for the year.

UST swept table tennis and taekwondo and topped men’s badminton and women’s chess, judo and swimming in highlighting another remarkable season of the country’s most prestigious collegiate league.

Far Eastern University (FEU), the men’s basketball champion, improved to third place overall–from fifth in Season 67–with 192 points, an enviable accomplishment because the Tamaraws do not have teams in seven events.

Ateneo slid to fifth with 180 points but owns the second prestigious trophies in the team events–men’s football–as well as the women’s basketball tiara.

Next year’s general host University of the East (UE), which swept the fencing crowns, stood at sixth with 166 points, Adamson, the perennial champion in women’s softball, was seventh with 87 and National University was eighth with 21 points.

The UAAP awards 15 points to the champion of each event, 12 for the second place, 10 for third, eight for fourth, six for fifth, four for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth.

Adamson U’s Fr. Maximino Rendon, the Season 68 president, and Dr. Ricardo Matibag, the league secretary treasurer, presided over last night’s awards night at the Adamson U auditorium with both stressing another highlight year for the league.
