MODEST STAGING OF CEBU CITY OLYMPICS ON NOVEMBER 19
MANILA, October 28, 2005 (STAR) By Caecent O. No-ot The Freeman 1- A modest holding of the 2005 Cebu City Olympics is mulled starting November 19 with the Cebu City Sports Center as the main hub of the multi-event conclave.
This will be the first time that the City Olympics will be played in weekends on November 19-20 and 26-27.
The opening ceremonies will be set early in the morning of November 19 and the games will immediately follow.
There will no field demonstration in both the opening and closing ceremonies as what has been done in the past 14 editions.
The new schedule was welcomed by the different competing schools as student athletes will no longer have to miss classes during competition days.
Also, karatedo and scrabble, which were earlier planned to be scrapped since the two events are not part of the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet, will still be competed.
The City Olympics is the Queen City of the South's division meet with the winners getting tickets to represent Cebu City in the CVIRAA.
Meanwhile, a budget of P395,000 is being readied for the event.
The bulk of the budget will be for the honorarium of the officiating officials and the purchase of sports equipment and other paraphernalia. The officiating officials will no longer be provided food.
For the competing teams, City Central, Lahug and schools based in the mountain barangays will be competing on its own.
The mountain areas will compose the North and South districts.
The tertiary division, on the other hand, will still be by schools.
