DEADLINE SET FOR NAMES OF SEAG  ATHLETES

MANILA
, August 30, 2005
(STAR) By Abac Cordero - All 11 countries competing in the forthcoming SEA Games, including host Philippines, have until Oct. 27 to submit the names of each and every athlete they are fielding in the biennial competition.

The Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee or Philsoc set the deadline after screening the initial and unofficial lists that were submitted by the different countries.

Earlier submitted to Philsoc were the entries by number or how many athletes each country is planning to field. This time, Philsoc wants the exact number with the names of the athletes.

Based on initial records, the Philippines has the most number of entries at 892, followed by Thailand with 780, Indonesia 779, Singapore 658, Vietnam 652, Malaysia 613, Myanmar 456, Brunei 271, Cambodia 108, Laos 102 and East Timor with just 29 athletes, including only four women, for a total of 5,340.

This number could either rise or fall by the time the final lists, including the names of the athletes, are submitted by the different countries.

"Normally, when you ask them to submit their entries by number, they always put the maximum number allowed, knowing that it’s easier to trim it down when the deadline nears," said Philsoc officer Nestor Ilagan.

"And this is what they’ve done. This time, we want the names of all the athletes," added Ilagan, secretary-general of the RP rowing association and a member of the Philsoc technical committee.

Ilagan, however, said that despite the deadline, there are certain sports, particularly team sports that are allowed to make last-minute changes in their lineups.

He cited basketball where the teams are allowed to make final changes during the managers’ meeting normally held just a couple of days before the start of the competition.

Changes, however, will have to be justified by any particular team or country. If in case the change is needed because of a sickness or injury, medical certificates must be submitted for approval.
