SCOOP  TO  HONOR  OLYMPIANS

MANILA, January 21, 2005 
(STAR) In commemoration of the Philippines’ 80th year of participation in the Olympic Games, the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines will honor Filipino Olympians who competed in the quadrennial meet from 1924 in Paris up to last year in Athens.

To be held in coordination with the Philippine Olympians Association, the tribute is scheduled during the SCOOP Annual Awards Night Feb. 24 at a place still to be decided.

Olympic silver medalists, boxers Anthony Villanueva (1964) and Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco (1996), along with bronze medalists, Teofilo Ildefonso (1928 and 1932) in swimming, Simeon Toribio (1932) and Miguel White (1936) in athletics and boxers Jose "Cely" Villanueva (1932), Leopoldo Serrantes (1986) and Roel Velasco (1992) head those to be honored.

Also to be recognized are the gold medal performance of Arianne Cerdena in demonstration sport bowling (1986) and the bronze medal feats of Stephen Fernandez and Bea Lucero, in exhibition event taekwondo (1992).

They all will be bestowed special award each, according to SCOOP president Eddie Alinea and POA head Art Macapagal.

The affair coincides with the POA general assembly.

All living Olympians will also be given plaques attesting their participation in the quadrennial conclave dubbed as the "Greatest Show on Earth."

Meanwhile, the SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session will remain suspended today in view of the preparations being undertaken for the Annual Awards Night.
