CHRISTMAS  WISHES  FROM  PBA  COACHES

MANILA, December 22, 2004
(STAR) SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson - Just like you and me, the 10 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) head coaches are making their wish lists for Christmas. Here’s what they’re hoping for during the holiday season.

San Miguel Beer’s Joseph Uichico is praying for Ron Jacobs’ recovery. Yeng Guiao is wishing for one more "quality big man" to shore up Red Bull’s frontline. Chot Reyes hopes Rudy Hatfield will be back in Coca-Cola uniform. Tim Cone wants to relive 1996 and steer Alaska to a second Grand Slam.

Talk ‘N’ Text’s Joel Banal is dreaming of a back-to-back All-Filipino championship while Barangay Ginebra’s Siot Tanquingcen is hoping to become a more active person in trying to help others. Sta. Lucia Realty’s Alfrancis Chua is asking the Lord "to protect our country and for the Filipino people to be as one." Shell’s Leo Austria–who is from Sariaya–is praying for the relief of his Quezon provincemates stricken by the recent typhoons.

FedEx’ Joe Lipa is appealing for more national sports leaders willing to work behind the scenes quietly and Ryan Gregorio wants a championship for Purefoods.

In their own words, the coaches revealed their three Christmas wishes.

Uichico–"I wish for peace and unity in the world, contentment in life for everyone and of course, for the San Miguel Beermen to get back to their winning ways. One of my prayers is for coach Ron’s miracle recovery. His birthday is on Dec. 27."

Guiao–"A break from all the disasters and calamities. At least, one more quality big man for Red Bull. More job opportunities for my kabalens and Filipinos in general."

Reyes–"Continued good health and happiness for my family. Continued growth of our other business interests. Rudy Hatfield back in Coke uniform."

Cone–"To relive ’96 and the Grand Slam. That my kids have a safe and merry Christmas. That I could bring an Olympic berth to the country."

Austria–"Long-lasting peace on earth. More blessings to our kababayan in Quezon who were devastated by typhoon. Unity among government officials, political parties and different heads of basketball organizations to achieve common goal."

Banal–"A more meaningful Christmas for everyone. The upliftment of the living conditions of every Filipino. Another All-Filipino championship for Talk ‘N’ Text."

Tanquingcen–"I wish that I become a more active person in trying to help others. That God continue to bless my whole family with good health. And my last wish is that understanding prevail in the hearts of everyone."

Chua–"My family to be in good health and to be safe always. Asking God to protect our country and for the Filipino people to be as one. More blessings in the year 2005 for all."

Lipa–"For the national team to win the Asian championship and more national sports leaders willing to work behind the scenes quietly."

Gregorio–"Peace and prosperity for our country. Safety, good health and prosperity for my family. And finally, for the continued success and a championship for Purefoods."

Merry Christmas to one and all.
