Hotdogs kick up storm vs Tigers By Nelson Beltran The Philippine Star 12/03/2004
Purefoods continued to buck the absence of main man Jun Limpot due to a back injury, outlasting Coca-Cola, 82-76, in a tight, gripping duel in a Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup road match at the La Salle Centrum in Lipa City last night.
Rey Evangelista, Kerby Raymundo and Paul Artadi carried the fight for the Hotdogs as they scored a followup to their close win over the Shell Turbochargers Sunday, gaining solo fourth place with a 7-6 win-loss card.
The Tigers suffered a fourth straight loss and their ninth in 14 games in all.
Surprisingly, a good Thursday crowd came out to watch the Lactovitale-sponsored road showcase despite the heavy rains brought about by Typhoon Yoyong.
Coca-Cola and Ginebra figured in a fierce and furious first-half battle with the Tigers taking a 19-18 edge after the first quarter and a 36-34 lead at the turn.
Meanwhile, PBA commissioner Noli Eala called for the postponement of today’s scheduled double-header at the Philsports Arena due to super typhoon .
The twinbill, pitting Red Bull Barako versus Sta. Lucia Realty and Ginebra San Miguel against San Miguel Beer, will be played in a later date.
The Kings were to go for a third straight win that would push them closer to the league-leading Talk n Text Phone Pals.
The Pals (10-2) and the Kings (9-4) lead the fight for the two outright semifinals seats being disputed in the double-round preliminaries. The Shell Turbochargers are at third place with a 9-5 win-loss card.
Barangay Ginebra coach Siot Tanguingcen said their plan is just to win as many games as they could then hope for the best although the crowd favorites are surely training their sights on a top 2 finish to avoid the complexities of a wildcard playoff.
Mathematically, Red Bull (5-7) and Sta. Lucia (4-8) are still in the hunt for an outright semis slot. But both teams need to sweep their remaining games to gain automatic entries to the next round.
If weather permits, action in the season-opening tourney resumes Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
