OLYMPICS/WORLD  BASKETBALL '06:  WHO'LL  CALL THE SHOTS FOR  RP 5?

MANILA,  November 12, 2004 (STAR) By Nelson Beltran - Yeng Guiao, Chot Reyes, Joel Banal and Tim Cone are the candidates to handle the national team in the next two Asian championships and hopefully the 2006 World Basketball Championship and the 2008 Olympics.

A reliable source said commissioner Noli Eala has told the four in informal talks they were being considered for the head coach job in the event that the Philippine Basketball Association and the Basketball Association of the Philippines seal a commitment for the formation, training and actual games of the RP team.

In fact, the PBA board of governors will convene in a meeting at the PBA office today to, among others, go over the proposed memorandum of agreement drafted by Eala.

If approved by the PBA board, the MOA could be signed by the PBA and the BAP by next week and Eala will immediately initiate the selection process for the head coach of the RP team.

The four candidates will be asked to make a roster of aspirants, schedules for training and actual competition, their coaching system for the team and the budget for the entire project.

Cone and Reyes have worked together in the RP Centennial Team that copped the bronze medal in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games. Cone was the head coach and Reyes among the assistant coaches.

Banal has yet to be a part of the national coaching staff but had played in several international jousts, including the world championship, in his checkered career.

Meanwhile, Talk n Text seeks to distance itself farther from the rest of the field as the red-hot Phone Pals square off with the Red Bull Barako Thunder at the resumption of the Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup at the Astrodome today.

Sta. Lucia Realty, which has just checked its skid the last time out, goes for a follow-up win versus FedEx in the other game.

In Tacloban, San Miguel moved one rung up to fourth place at 5-4 when it beat Purefoods, 88-82, in a Lactovitale-backed road game at the Leyte National HS gym last night.
