JUNIOR GOLF: 7-YEAR-OLD AREVALO STANDS TALL IN VALLEY TILT
MANILA, November 9, 2004 (STAR) Seven-year-old Mark Anthony Arevalo shot a one-over-par 71 built around four birdies at the Valley Executive course on Sunday to win the overall championship of the Junior Golfers’ League’s November leg.
The chubby grade-schooler at Southville International in Las Pinas pieced together nines of 35-36 to sign for the lowest gross of the day while playing in the Class D field for 9-10-year-olds.
Anthony beat eldest brother Michael for the overall plum by three shots. Michael, a senior at Southville, settled for the boys’ Class A (15-17) trophy after shooting a 74.
The tournament, hosted by television personality and movie actor Vic Sotto for daughter Paulina’s birthday, was actually turned into a family affair by the Arevalos after Miguel and Abegail also won their respective divisions.
The 12-year-old Miguel shot an 83 to win the boys’ Class C plum by three over Bino Dela Paz, while five-year-old Abegail dominated girls’ Class F after an 85.
Paulina, touted as the next junior star, submitted a 76 and won Class C by 17 shots over Nicole Martinez. Father Vic awarded the trophies to the winners.
The other winners in the girls’ division were Cyna Rodriguez (A, 88), Kyla Olives (B, 101), Andrea Unson (D, 79), Felicia Medalla (E, 85) and Erika Salinas (Special Division, 96); in the boys’ field, Junjee Eustaquio (B, 81), Juan Paolo Flores (D, 84) Ivan Monsalve (E, 115) and Arvin Quiazon (Special Division, 106).
