PBL OPEN: WELCOAT HALTS MAGNOLIA RUN IN DOUBLE OT
MANILA, November 3, 2004 (STAR) By Joey Villar - Marvin Ortiguerra nailed a tough fadeaway jumper with 4.5 seconds left and Welcoat Paints nipped Magnolia Ice Cream, 80-79, in double-overtime for its first win in the PBL Open Championship at the Pasig Sports Center yesterday.
Anthony Washington and Chester Tolomia led the Welcoat charge early on before Ortiguerra came to their rescue as the Paintmasters checked a two-game skid.
Washington, Tolomia and Ortiguerra combined for 59 points .
Air Philippines gained the solo lead as Magnolia suffered its first loss in three starts.
Earlier, Granny Goose Tortillos leaned on the reliable duo of Alfie Grijaldo and Joseph Quinahan as it grounded Addict Mobile-Ateneo, 70-64, for it second win in three outings.
Grijaldo, who helped National University clinch a rare Final Four spot in 2000, sizzled with 17 points including seven in the fourth quarter.
"He’s starting to pick up his game but he still has a lot of things to improve and I know he will after a couple of more games," said Granny Goose coach Jun Tan of his 6-foot-4 power forward who recently led Tribu Sugbu to the NBC title.
Quinahan, for his part, carried the load in the first half where he scored all of his 16 markers that went with 10 rebounds, four blocked shots and an assist.
Grijaldo and Quinahan also lent big hand in an efficient defense, Granny Goose put up in dealing Addict Mobile-Ateneo a third straight loss.
"The key in this game was defense. We hardly gave them second-chance points," said Tan.
From a 38-all deadlock, the Tortillos zoomed to a 53-42 upperhand late in the third period.
