PBL UNITY CUP: WELCOAT GIFTS NEW COACH WITH BIG WIN

Chester Tolomia returned to the league with a bang while new head coach Caloy Garcia got a big welcome yesterday as Welcoat Paints beat Blustar Detergent black and blue, 76-60, in the PBL Unity Cup at the Makati Coliseum.

As if losing seven crack players was hardly a problem for Garcia, the Paint Masters needed just one quarter to size up their rivals before stepping on the gas in the third on the way to a breezy win that put them abreast with opening day winners Viva Mineral Water-FEU and Sunkist-UST.

Garcia, who inherited the coaching job from Leo Austria, said there was nothing new in the system they employed in their game against the Detergent Kings but credited the solid show of new recruits like Tolomia and Marvin Ortiguerra and plus the usual firepower provided by Jojo Tangkay.

"Wala akong binago sa system ni coach Leo, medyo siguro maganda lang ang pasok ko sa mga players," said Garcia who was Austria’s understudy for almost two years with the team.

And to show that he’s still a power to reckon with, the 6-foot-2 Tolomia, who played for Ginebra last year, exploded for 22 points, including 10 in a bristling run in the second quarter.

Ariel Capus, who was hardly given enough playing time in the last conference due to the presence of star players, among them James Yap, Marc Pingris, Paul Artadi and Ervin Sotto, also did shine as he finished with 20 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the 3-point zone.

Actually, only Capus and Tolomia scored for Welcoat in the second quarter as they combined for 23 points that put them on top at halftime 36-28 following a struggling start.

Held to just 3 points in the first two quarters, Tangkay joined the scoring spree as he scattered 10 of his 15 points in a murderous third quarter assault that gave the Paint Masters several 16-point leads.

So unforgiving were the Paint Master they padded their lead to 68-48 with 5:35 left, giving Garcia the luxury of using his second unit in the last two minutes.
