HK YACHT JELIK WINS 2nd STANDARD INSURANCE MANILA TO BORACAY RACE

Frank Pong’s Jelik, a Reichel Pugh 77 from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC), finished at 19 hours 41 minutes 53 seconds to take the Standard Insurance Trophy for line honours and win the RHKYC-donated perpetual Kellet Island Trophy as Overall IRC Racing Class winner.

Standard Insurance Centennial II skippered by Ernesto "Judes" Echauz and Karakoa of Ray Ordoveza finished 2nd and 3rd in the overall IRC Racing Class among the 13 yachts which started the 203 nautical mile race from the Manila Yacht Club. Echauz’s Sydney 46 yacht, Standard Insurance Centennial II from MYC and Subic Bay Yacht Club, clocked 30:50:36 for second place beating Ordoveza’s Andrews 53 Karakoa by 15 mins. 59 secs.

Jelik, Karakoa, Free Fire and Maligaya broke the 25 hrs. 33 mins. record set by Andy Soriano’s Swan-80 Maligaya during the Manila to Boracay Race last year.

Standard Insurance president Judes Echauz said, "The race has not only become the Philippine’s premier sailing race but it also introduced the islands, especially Boracay, as a destination for international yachtsmen."

IRC Division B 1-2-3 winners, respectively, are Martin Tanco’s Challenge, Doni Altura’s Vivaldi and Bobby Benares’ Lethal Weapon from the Puerto Galera Yacht Club (PGYC), finishing Day 3, Feb. 13.

Top three PY Cruising Class winners are PGYC-based China Rose of Rainer Blum, Tanco’s Challenge and Altura’s Vivaldi but China Rose, Peter King’s Infinity and Richard Morris’ Salina won the Overall PY Class. Other starters at MYC in Manila are Trio and Allan Burell’s Sandoway, which won the Navigator’s Log Trophy.

The Karakoa team topped the two-man inter boat Hobie 16 Challenge organized by Mark Haswell.

Gracing the Feb. 14 Awards Night at Boracay’s Seawind Resort are MYC Commodore Ildefonso G. Tronqued and other MYC, PSA and Boracay, Aklan and tourism officials and Standard Insurance top management and branch personnel from the Visayas area.
