PINOYTUNES, PHILSTAR.COM JOIN FORCES TO PROMOTE LEGAL OPM DOWNLOAD
MANILA, JANUARY 17, 2008 (STAR) Pinoytunes, the largest portal of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) recently tied up with philstar.com to jointly promote the "pinoytunes.net" website, an on-line platform that campaigns for the legal downloading of OPM and gives millions of Filipinos immediate access to their favorite Filipino tunes.
Bambi Fonacier, president of Touch Music Video Systems, Inc., the proponent of the Pinoytunes website said, "It's about time really. For years, OPM has suffered because of rampant pirating through file sharing, disc ripping and downloading from so-called "free sites." All of these are illegal activities - but the local music industry is powerless to enforce the law. Because of these trends, Pinoy artists and record labels have seen a sharp
decline in CD sales over the past couple of years. This has become detrimental for the music industry. We at Pinoytunes feel that the time is ripe to introduce this portal if only to ensure the survival of the Philippine music industry -- and to ensure that OPM continues to thrive."
The Pinoytunes websites boasts of a very comprehensive catalogue of "pinoy tunes." At present, more than 4,000 songs have been uploaded to their server, and this "uploading" is sanctioned by the various local record labels who fully support the cause of Pinoytunes.
"We believe in the integrity of the Pinoy," says Pinoytunes Director, Rod Nepomuceno. "Sure a lot of Filipinos now get their OPM music via illegal downloading or file-sharing. But most of them resort to this only because they don't have a portal or source from which they could legally get their OPM music - especially Pinoys overseas who don't have access to record stores who sell CDs of their favorite local artists. I have no doubt that if we give Pinoys, especially overseas Pinoys, a source from which they can get their music legally, I think they will go for it. With Pinoytunes, they now have access to legal downloading because we have tie-ups with the major local record labels."
The Pinoytunes portal offers a comprehensive collection of OPM music, not only from a "genre" perspective, but also from a "time" perspective. The range of music is impressive -- from the classics of legendary crooner Diomedes Maturan, to the native sounds of kundiman, to the standards of Gary Valenciano, to the modern sounds of Parokya ni Edgar, to the TV song hits of Willie Revillame, Pinoytunes has them all. And each song is available for the very affordable price of $0.75 per song, around Php 30 per song. Most CDs are worth Php 300 each with an average of 10 songs per CD. But the disadvantage of CDs is that you have to buy all the songs in the CD – even those you don't like. With Pinoytunes, you buy only the songs that you like.
"We at philstar.com are excited to be partners with Pinoytunes.net," says Katrina Sandejas-Mañosa, GM of Philstar.com. "We share in Bambi and Rod's vision. We believe in the need to promote OPM because OPM basically represents us. OPM represents everything that's truly Pinoy. We Pinoys express ourselves best through our music. That's why philstar.com and Philippine Star are going all out to support Pinoytunes, not only through banner ads on the site, but also by providing interesting content regarding the latest news on Pinoy music. We also plan to publish a weekly Top 10 OPM Pinoytunes download, both on the site and in Philippine Star so people will know which songs will become the latest hit."
