AMAZON.COM  TO  STREAM  LIVE  ENTERTAINMENT  TALK  SHOW

SAN FRANCISCO, January 24, 2006
(INQUIRER) First posted 11:19pm (Mla time) Jan 24, 2006 Agence France-Presse -- Controversy-courting comedian Bill Maher will host a television-style talk show on US Internet shopping website Amazon.com, the company said.

Maher, who has joked that his penchant to poke fun at powerful US figures led to the demise of his television program "Politically Incorrect," will be back in the spotlight with the online show "Amazon Fishbowl with Bill Maher."

"I'm thrilled to be on the cutting edge of this," Maher said in a written release. "Amazon has included me in an opportunity to provide top-shelf television-style programming live on the world's computer screens."

The 30-minute programs will be streamed live on Thursday nights at Amazon.com beginning June 1, according to the Internet company based in the northwestern city of Seattle.

The dozen shows in the series are to feature performances by musicians as well as interviews with authors, movie directors and actors. Works touted by the guests are to be available for purchase on the website.

show's "mission" is "to help our customers discover new books, films, and music, and to help the creators of these works find new audiences," said Kathy Savitt, Amazon.com vice president for strategic communications, content, and initiatives.

Amazon.com previewed the program at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend and said it will feature highlights of the show on its website beginning Tuesday.

Maher's guests for the Sundance preview show reportedly included musician Rob Thomas and popular fright-novel author Stephen King, as well as writer Armistead Maupin.

The show will feature a segment in which United Parcel Service (UPS) drivers accompanied by movie celebrities such as Harrison Ford, Nick Lachey or Michael J. Fox make "special deliveries" to Amazon customers. The show is sponsored by UPS.
