[RELATED: Miss Universe pageant day not a holiday: Palace]

JANUARY 24 -It was a day that President Duterte wished would never end.
A behaved Duterte welcomed candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant yesterday at Malacañang and asked them to be the “change that they want to see in the world.” “Before I proceed, I’d like to make an admission that never in my life have I been in a room full of beautiful women. This is a privilege and an honor and I hope that this day will never end,” the President said. “I must say that God is really good. Aside from the worries of governance, with all the troubles in the world, when we look at you, we forget the universe, but only you,” he added. Instead of delivering his usual free-wheeling and profanity-laced speeches, Duterte stuck to his prepared statement. “I usually do not read my speeches. I am not up to it really, but this time because they told me that I must behave in my language, in the adjectives that I would be using to characterize or define your beauty, all of you,” he said. Duterte on best behavior for Miss U beauties

It was a day that President Duterte wished would never end.

MANILA, JANUARY 30, 2017 (PHILSTAR) Alexis Romero - January 24, 2017 - 12:00am - It was a day that President Duterte wished would never end.

A behaved Duterte welcomed candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant yesterday at Malacañang and asked them to be the “change that they want to see in the world.”

“Before I proceed, I’d like to make an admission that never in my life have I been in a room full of beautiful women.

Duterte went on to thank the Miss Universe Organization for allowing the Philippines to host the beauty tilt.

“I am confident that the Department of Tourism and our valuable partners in the private sector and government have prepared well enough to make this an event to remember,” he said.

“And I am equally confident that our host communities and the Filipino people would themselves have given and will give each candidate many precious memories to hold on to,” he added.

ROOMFUL OF BEAUTIES – The Miss Universe contestants are presented to President Duterte during their visit MANILA BULLETIN FILE

Duterte said it was an honor for the Philippines to share its beautiful destinations and rich culture with the 86 candidates. The candidates toured parts of Vigan, Cebu, Baguio, Batangas and Davao before visiting Malacañang.

The President also said the Miss Universe pageant is an opportunity for candidates to represent their countries, promote their advocacies and advance women empowerment to a greater audience.

“More importantly, this is a chance for you to make an impact, to inspire change and even be the change that you wish to see in the world,” Duterte said.

“That is why I hope that you will continue to make this out of your time here in the competition and in your country,” he added.

Before ending his speech, Duterte proposed a toast for the “beauty and brains” of the Miss Universe candidates.

Eighty-four of the 86 candidates attended the courtesy call on the President.

The representatives of Finland and Switzerland were not able to make it because they were not feeling well. Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said the two candidates may not be used to the warm weather.

Teo said Duterte has been invited to the coronation pageant on Jan. 30 but the President has not yet made a commitment to attend the event.

This will be the third time the Philippines is hosting the international beauty contest. The Philippines hosted the beauty tilt in 1974 and in 1994.

Teo previously said the hosting of the Miss Universe pageant would cost about $11 million but clarified that the private sector, not the government, would be the one to shoulder the expenses.

The Philippines’ candidate for Miss Universe 2016 is Maxine Medina, a 25-year-old model and interior designer.

The Philippines has bagged the Miss Universe title three times. Gloria Diaz won the title in 1969 while Margie Moran took home the Miss Universe crown in 1973. The reigning Miss Universe titleholder is Pia Wurtzbach, a Filipino-German actress and model.

Miss Universe pageant day not a holiday: Palace ABS-CBN News Posted at Jan 26 2017 03:07 PM | Updated as of Jan 26 2017 05:59 PM

MANILA - Students and working Filipinos will have to file a leave of absence if they want to watch the Miss Universe coronation day, as January 30, Monday, will remain a working day. Malacanang announced Thursday the January 30 pageant is a working day, despite suggestions from various sectors to have it declared a holiday.

Earlier, Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo urged Malacañang to declare January 30 a non-working holiday to give Filipinos "the opportunity to witness in their own backyard a contest where Filipinas have proven to excel and become certified champions on beauty and brain."

Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, for her part, had said it would be favorable if Palace declared January 30 as a holiday "so everybody could watch" the Miss Universe coronation in the country.

The Philippines is hosting the prestigious pageant, which has over 80 candidates from around the world.

In what way will you raise MJ—the Italian way or the Pinoy way?

Italian and Filipino ways are very similar. I am a hands-on mom, and I will teach him respect toward others and honesty.

How’s your newfound friendship with Kris Aquino?

I respect Kris. She’s a strong woman with a lot on her shoulders. She’s raising her sons on her own, and that’s the hardest job. I honestly like her. I find her interesting.

How has MJ changed your life?

I am no longer self-centered.

How do you balance being a mom and a partner to James?

I’m excited to teach him good values. I’m scared to make mistakes. It’s a daily learning experience.

James Yap and Michela Cazzola with their five-month-old son MJ during the baptismal ceremony

Following the religious belief of his parents, Michael James (MJ for short), the five-month-old son of James Yap and Michela “Mic” Cazzola was baptized a Catholic at an exclusive affair last Saturday, Jan. 14, with only close friends invited.

Among the godparents were lawyer Lorna Kapunan, Dondon Monteverde, Julius Babao and Jeffrey Yap (James’ bosom buddy and partner in a motorcycle business). They were carefully selected by the couple.

“We chose the people who are close to us and who we look up to,” Mic told Funfare. “They are those who we believe can set a good example and provide MJ guidance in terms of work ethic and values about family and friendship.”

Among the invited guests were Bimby, James’ son with ex-wife Kris Aquino, and Kris’ other son Joshua. Motif of the affair was The Little Prince.

At five months (last Jan. 8), MJ is already aware of his surroundings and can recognize people, according to Mic. “And we can hardly wait for him to be able to say ‘Mama’ and ‘Papa,’” said Mic.

Asked when he and Mic are getting married, James gave his usual “safe” answer, “It will happen, nandyan lang ’yan.” Maybe they would have to wait for MJ to be big enough to act as ring bearer! “Uy, okey ‘yan,” said James.

After the conference and sumptuous lunch featuring popular local dishes and delicacies bagnet, pinakbet, Vigan longanisa and bibingka, among others; the delegates enjoyed interacting with colorful parrots, a friendly albino yellow belly python and Burmese python, a tame deer and the sight of wildlife freely roaming in a section of the zoo.

Here’s the rest of Celso’s report:

“The highlight of their visit culminated that night when the gorgeous delegates walked down on Calle Crisologo, a cobblestone street transformed into a glamorous fashion show catwalk. Wearing different versions of elegant Philippine terno, the beauties ended up to Plaza Burgos where a fashion show was staged showcasing creations by ingenious Pinoy fashion designers.

“The show featured six ternos made of traditional woven fabric of Vigan and the Ilocos region called abel iloco or inabel created by fashion designers Eroll Remijares, Darwin Ramirez, Raffy Sy, Jan Van Paquing, Danika Damo, and Gyan Cluade Ben, all members of the Ilocos Sur Designers’ Guild.

Twelve members of media including Celso were accommodated at the Top V Hotel located in San Jose, Narvacan and had a hearty lunch at the nearby Villa Gloria Beach Resort in Bulanos, hosted by Malou Valera Viloria.

Crowds packed the Mall of Asia Arena as each candidate showcased her swimsuits, evening gowns and national costumes in front of the judges.

The preliminary competition that started on Thursday will whittle down the crowded field to the top 12 candidates for the pageant night, the Miss Universe website said.

‘Feng shui’ forecast: 2017 a good year to have a baby By: Cathy Cañares-Yamsuan - @inquirerdotnetPhilippine Daily Inquirer / 03:46 AM January 25, 2017

The Romance Star that rules the Rooster sign makes 2017 a good year for relationships, weddings and having babies, said feng shui expert Princess Lim Fernandez.—MANDY NAVASERO

The Year of the Fire Rooster is a good time to have a baby, according to feng shui expert Princess Lim Fernandez.

“The Rooster is very charismatic, one of the romance signs of the zodiac. The ruling star of the year is the Romance Star. It’s a good year for relationships, to get married, to have a baby. Those planning to have a child should not wait until the Year of the Dog (in 2018),” said Fernandez.

The feng shui maven explained that the 60-year Chinese zodiac has only two signs where children are born with the twin gifts of academic luck and inborn benefactor luck—the Fire Rooster this year, and the Water Rabbit in 2023.

“Academic luck means the child will never have need for tutoring; they will be very smart kids with a quest for knowledge,” Fernandez said.

Benefactor luck indicates that Fire Rooster children “will always have someone to support them and help them,” she added.

Out of the box

The Fire Rooster’s academic star also bodes well for businesses and creative people who do not resort to conventional solutions.

“This year, we will be looking at a lot of innovations especially in the media, the Web… Those who are capable of thinking out of the box, of being flexible and being quick, are the ones who will succeed,” Fernandez added.

Like other feng shui practitioners, Fernandez talked about “Flying Stars” or energies that occupy and influence directions.

The East sector of any environment, for example, has the Wealth Star, which delivers monetary gains for the occupant of the room or office facing this direction.

Trouble is, the Wealth Star is accompanied by three Killer Stars, “which means wealth comes and goes just as easily. So be careful of your money or investments. The more conservative and less risk, the better,” she advised.

Also considered inauspicious directions this year are the South, Southwest, West and Northwest sectors.

“The areas that are not so lucky should be kept as quiet as possible. Don’t renovate, don’t hammer, don’t drill in these areas. Among the four, the South is not good, the Southwest comes second. The West is where the Rooster stays, so try not to disturb him because he is the emperor of the year,” Fernandez said.

Small details

Quick forecasts she gave include:

Rat: Be careful of small details because ignoring them could lead to bigger problems later.

Ox: There is an Achievement Star that helps the Ox, but gaining comes with a price.

Tiger: There is more money luck and a good star that helps turn bad into good.

Rabbit: In conflict with the Rooster this year, the Rabbit should approach all things with caution, watch out for injuries and spend judiciously.

Dragon: The Dragon is aided by the Benefactor, Prosperity and Collaboration Stars, so time to go out and shine!

Snake: Take a step back before making a decision and choose well who you should trust.

Horse: The Horse has both the Romance and Negative Romance Stars, making relationships “sweet and sour.” It helps to think straight in matters of the heart.

Goat: Impatience could make the Goat raise criticism that he cannot take back. Everything comes at the proper time.

Monkey: Health problems abound so it’s best to get enough sleep and rest to prepare for opportunities for movement and travel.

Rooster: Lucky stars in wealth and career, but relationships and health have to be approached with caution.

Dog: A benefactor, most likely male, can translate into good job potentials, a promotion or a change in roles.

Pig: There is a need to travel more so that negative stars do not have the time to catch up. Do not stay in one place for a long time.

Spring cleaning

Fernandez noted that today until the eve of the Chinese New Year this Friday is a good time for spring cleaning in the home.

“Start from the outside going in. Give the house a fresh coat of paint, trim all shrubbery, fix the garden and throw away things not used for a year. Otherwise, new things will not come in. To make changes in life, one needs to start in the home,” she said.—INQ
