“It is an honor that international beauties come in the city,” said mayor Mauricio Domogan, adding, “it was just unfortunate that the usual Panagbenga parade route was shortened because of the time limitations,” he explained.

Still, as early as six o’clock, residents queued up along the streets to have a quick peek at the international beauties. “It is worth the wait,” a beauty contest fanatic said.

Miss Universe bets tasted the warm welcome of Baguio City, the country’s “vacation capital”, peeking into the unique culture of the highlands they can relish throughout their lives.

The international beauties tasted Baguio at its best, like the famous strawberry picking adventure at BCC’s own strawberry fields at its 2012-born “green zone”. “We grow our own herbs,” beamed BCC general manager Anthony de Leon.

De Leon is the president of the organizing association – Hotels and Restaurants Association of Baguio (HRAB), the private organization that shelled out P31 million for hosting the event.

An arts and cultural exhibit prepared by Baguio solar painting artist Jordan Mang-osan and Baguio-bred national artist and international award-winning filmmmaker Kidlat Tahimik at the BCC’s Cordilera Convention Hall ushered in the Cordillera spirit and culture to the beauty tilt bets, capping it with a formal gala dinner Wednesday night.

Our hosting, director Venus Tan of the Department of Tourism said, “showcase(s) Baguio City for excellence in travel and tourism.”

Miss New Zealand Tanya Dawson is half-Filipina and traces her roots to Baguio City and Pangasinan.

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – New Zealand’s bet – half Filipina Tanya Dawson – together with her Filipino mother, family, friends, and supporters from San Vicente in Sta Maria town in Pangasinan, lined up the streets of Baguio City during the Panagbenga Flower Festival yesterday to support her.

The 24-year-old beauty’s mother, Margarita Palabay Pelenda, 54, who came back to the country and the city, described Tanya as kind, industrious, and smart.

“As a child, Tanya,” she narrated, was not the kind of girl that is going to show business. She liked farming, Pelenda said, since their family, back in New Zealand, owns a huge farm.

But as Tanya grew up, her mom saw her potential to become a beauty queen. “I encouraged her to join beauty contests because she’s beautiful and she will make it.”

In 2014, Tanya was named Miss Teen Universe. She was also a supermodel in New Zealand. She was crowned Miss New Zealand Universe in 2016. She is also into film, being a theater teacher by profession.

“It’s God’s best blessing to her,” Margarita said, as she brandished a tarpaulin of her girl’s photograph at Burnham Park in 2012. Actually, she confided, she met Tanya’s father in Baguio City.

“We’re very proud of her,” said Mayor Domogan of the very rare occasion of hosting Miss Universe bets, including Miss New Zealand, who traces her roots to Baguio City and Pangasinan.

Senate sets hearing on MMFF issues January 20, 2017 PHILSTAR

Sotto wants a separate film festival for independent films. Philstar.com, file

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media will hold a hearing on "issues surrounding the Metro Manila Film Festival" next Tuesday.

According to a statement sent by the office of Sen. Grace Poe, committee chair, the hearing will be on Sen. Vicente Sotto III's resolution recommending the creation of a separate film festival for independent films.

Sotto, brother of comedian Vic Sotto, filed the bill after he disagreed with the Metro Manila Film Festival selection committee's picks for the festival.

He said the criteria that the committee used to screen entries "was prejudicial to the regular MMFF moviegoers, particularly the children who always look forward to these movies to bond, enjoy, be entertained and share a good laugh with their family and friends."

The selection committee for last year's festival said it picked films based on quality regardless of whether they were made by independent filmmakers or by big-name studios. Vic Sotto-starrer "Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers" was not among the films featured at the MMFF.

"The hearing is also called to determine how to further support the local film industry through much-needed legislation," Poe's office said.

Among those invited to the hearing are:

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority General Manager Thomas Orbos Movie Workers Welfare Fund (Mowelfund) president Boots Anson-Roa Movie and Television Review and Classification Board Chairperson Eugenio Villareal Film Development Council of the Philippines Chairperson Liza Diño Officials of the MMFF Selection Committee led by film critic Nicanor Tiongson Director Erik Matti Film producer Ronald Allan Monteverde

Poe said the hearing will also look into how the last film festival did and check if the festival's goal of helping movie workers through funding from MMFF proceeds is being reached.

"Mahalagang pakinggan natin ang panig ng bawat isa upang matulungan ang industriyang nagbibigay sa atin ng karangalan at ligaya na minsan ay lungkot na may kurot sa puso. Layon nating mas patatagin at payabungin pa ang pelikulang Pilipino," Poe said in the release.

A member of Poe's staff could not confirm if the hearing will also cover allegations of animal cruelty in the film "Oro," where a dog was allegedly actually killed in one of the scenes.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society has already filed a complaint against director Alvin Yapan and producers Mark Shandii Bacolod, Jane Bondoc Gonzales and Arianne Dulay over the alleged butchering of the dog.

Get to know Bong Go, the 'Pambansang Photobomber' FUNFARE By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star) | Updated January 21, 2017 - 12:00am 45 843 googleplus0 0

Christopher Lawrence ‘Bong’ Go, the man present in all (bar none) of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte’s activities — Photos from the Presidential Commission reprinted from Philippine National Police Journal

If ever Pres. DU30’s bioflick were made (which is not really far-fetched, his life story being as colorful as, if not more so than that of any showbiz star), there should be a side story about Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, the man present in all (bar none) of the presidential activities.

He’s just there, he doesn’t talk, he doesn’t do anything at all, he’s just being there, silent and stoic, and not expressing any emotion at all, neither smiling nor laughing nor reacting accordingly to whatever the situation is. He’s the shadow beside and behind DU30, like a statue that catches your attention even if he doesn’t intend, or perhaps want to.

Really now, the only time I had a close encounter with Bong was last year, four months into DU30’s administration, during The Philippine STAR editors’ audience with the newly-installed President of the Philippines. He was part of the welcome committee and we talked briefly. He seemed to be very shy, his voice so low, almost inaudible, that I thought I didn’t get what he was saying, if at all.

There’s a Pambansang This and Pambansang That, and because he’s always photographed with DU30 all the time, any time, Bong Go has been fondly called Pambansang Photobomber (PB) which is how he is identified in an article by Betina Reyes in the recent issue of the glossy Philippine National Police Journal (PNPJ) with PSSUPT. Gilberto DC Cruz who gave me a copy.

Thanks to Betina for giving me more than just a glimpse of the Pambansang Photobomber who is always seen (on TV, newspapers and social media) but never heard from, making some people suspect that he’s a bona fide member of, hehehe, the Silent Majority.

An AB Management graduate from De La Salle University, Bong, 42, is the Presidential Assistant to DU30, a position that doesn’t go to his head (as it did many of those who have held that position, according to Betina, remaining “as humble and down-to-earth as he was when he was still executive assistant to then Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte,” comparing his role in Malacañang Palace to that of a utility man — “Taga-linis. All-around man. Yun lang yung role ko. Kaya nga utility man. Dalahin mo lahat. Buhatin mo lahat. Linisin mo yung naiwan. Nag-guide lang ako. Mayor, dito tayo dumaan.”

Of course, Bong is just downplaying himself, so humble of the man who is probably closer to DU30 than any or all of the four presidential children.

Since he’s with DU30 24/7, I suppose Bong knows the President heart and soul, inside-out, “having been an assistant to Duterte since 1998 when, at age 24, he took over after Jimboy Halili died,” according to Betina’s story.

“His grandfather, August Tesoro, was among the ninongs at Duterte and (former wife) Elizabeth Zimmerman’s wedding.”

His work as Presidential Assistant takes most of Bong’s time away from his wife and two children, getting a break only when DU30 goes on a holiday (like during the Christmas season). He snatches some time to play his favorite sport, basketball.

Excerpts from Betina’s story:

Thanks to his management skills, Go is able to attend to the President and to the people who would like to talk to his boss.

He knows how to screen which matters need to go to the President, and which ones he can take charge of. He knows the President so well it seems as if he could read his mind.

Go is perhaps one of the best people to attest to the President’s character, having been an executive assistant to Duterte for almost two decades. He said Duterte may appear strict but, in fact, he is not when it comes to the people around him.

“Hindi naman siya ganoon ka-istrikto sa mga tao niya. Hinahayaan niya ang lahat magtrabaho.” What matters for the President, said Go, is doing what is right. “Ang gusto lang niya, kung ano yung tama. Tuwid lang. Kung anong sinabi niya, sundin n’yo lang.”

Now, if ever DU30’s bioflick were made, it wouldn’t be complete without Bong Go not just as a Pambansang Photobomber but as a key character.

And who would play the 71-year-old DU30? Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez? Hmmm, a bit young. Eddie Garcia? Hmmm, too old. Why not Ronaldo Valdez? Hmmm, more like it (the two are almost of the same age.) And who should play Bong Go? Yes, Richard Yap. Perfect, isn’t he?
