Duterte wants Steve Harvey out of Miss Universe By Alexis Romero (philstar.com) | Updated September 1, 2016 - 5:08pm 15 1411 googleplus1 0

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED 5:08 p.m.) — Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said Thursday President Rodrigo Duterte responded negatively when he was informed that Steve Harvey will be the host of Miss Universe pageant.

Teo said Duterte does not want Harvey to continue as host of the prestigious pageant the Philippines will host in January.

"Actually, he (Harvey) is under contract for five years, I believe. So definitely, he's again going to host the Miss Universe," Teo said in a press conference yesterday in Malacañang.

"When I told the president about that, he reacted negatively. He said ‘That cannot be.' That was what he said. And he said ‘I'm going to talk to the Miss Universe (organizers) that he should not be (the emcee). So that's my problem," she added.

Asked if Duterte was serious about his statement, Teo replied: "I don't know if he was serious. But when he told me, he was not laughing."

Harvey drew flak after he wrongly named Colombia's candidate Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner of Miss Universe 2015 last December. The Philippines' candidate Pia Wurtzbach won the crown while Gutierrez was the 1st runner-up.

Harvey has apologized for his mistake, whom he said, has caused him many sleepless nights.

She said he would suggest to pageant organizers the designation of a Filipina co-host to appease Duterte.

"I'll suggest that we will have somebody from here, probably a media woman to host," the tourism chief said.

GOVT WILL NOT SPEND A SINGLE CENTAVO

Teo said the Philippine government would not spend a single centavo for the hosting of the international beauty tilt. The group of former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis "Chavit" Singson would raise the $11 million needed to fund the event, she added.

"I'm sure that after the Miss Universe, the Philippines will be in the world map. Everybody will be looking at us because during the Miss Universe contest, all the beautiful places, the destinations, will be featured," Teo said.

Ancillary events would be held in areas outside Metro Manila to prevent traffic jam but the grand coronation night would be held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay. The coronation night would be held on January 30 but the candidates would start arriving on January 13.

Asked what the government plans to do to street dwellers during the duration of the pageant, Teo said the social welfare department would be the one to take care of them.

"We will take care of them in a more humane way," she added.

"(Social welfare) Secretary Judy (Taguiwalo) will take care of them, I assure you that. That's all."

Taguiwalo said there are no plans yet on how to handle street dwellers during the duration of the pageant.

“But the president’s instruction is not to hide them,” she said in a text message.

The tourism department is also coordinating with the military to ensure the safety of candidates.

Amalia Fuentes out of hospital SHARES: 1436 VIEW COMMENTS By: Dolly Anne Carvajal @inquirerdotnet
Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:08 AM March 2nd, 2016

MAMA Nena is showing signs of improvement.

I AM overjoyed that my second mom, Amalia Fuentes, is finally out of the hospital. Mama Nena was confined since October, after she suffered a stroke in South Korea. According to her brother, Tito Cheng Muhlach, she was discharged on Feb. 24.

“Nena can already comprehend things and recognize people,” he disclosed. “God willing, within the year, she will recover completely.”

Oskee Cabeltis, Mama Nena’s favorite hairdresser (as well as mine), told me that she requested him to go to her house this week. (We usually bond in Oskee’s salon on Boni avenue.)

Mama Nena wants to have her hair colored. That’s a sure sign that La Amalia is getting her groove back and is ready for her second lease on life in full color.

I would like to believe it’s more than coincidence that Mama Nena is back home, a few weeks before the first death anniversary of her beloved daughter, Liezl Martinez. Liezl must have whispered to God to heal her Mama in time for the commemoration of her passing. Their mother-daughter bond goes beyond eternity.

Pregnancy thoughts

James Yap’s stunning girlfriend, Michela Cazzola, shares her “pregnancy” thoughts with Inquirer. The Italian who’s a Filipino at heart will surely be one hot mama!

After giving birth, will marriage be next?

The baby came early. We were talking already about marriage and babies, but the baby arrived first. I don’t want to get married because I “have to.” I want to get married because “we want to,” so I want to wait until after the baby is born. I don’t want to get married while pregnant—it will look like a forced thing. With James, he said it would be nice for the baby to be able to walk in church with us to witness our union.

What’s the toughest part of your pregnancy?

Mood swings.

How does James take extra care of you now that you’re pregnant?

We eat what I want to eat, and he bears my mood swings.

Will you give birth in Manila or Italy?

Manila.

In what way will you raise your kid as an Italian and as a “Filipino at heart”?

Italians and Filipinos have very similar values and practices, so it’s much easier, because for both of us, family is the number one thing.

As an Italian, work ethic is a must… being independent, having your own work… being honest.

What promise would you like to make to James as the mom-to-be of his baby?

I promise to do my best to raise our baby well and to be a hands-on mom.

Pres. DU30 gives Carlo & Donna a VACC Award FUNFARE By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star) | Updated September 3, 2016 - 12:00am 0 1 googleplus0 0

Popularly known as ‘The Golden Couple,’ Carlo J. Caparas and wife Donna Villa are recognized for their ‘massacre’ movies that helped facilitate the arrest of suspects in true-life heinous crimes. This photo was taken during the Gabi ng Parangal of last year’s Metro Manila Filmfest at the Kia Theater where they served as presenters. — PHOTO BY VER PAULINO

As part of the 18th anniversary of the VACC (Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption) recently, Donna Villa and Carlo J. Caparas, popularly known as the “Golden Couple” (because of their blockbuster “massacre films” series), were given a VACC Award by no less than Pres. DU30. Among the other awardees was Chief Public Attorney Persida Rueda Acosta, who is a staunch advocate against corruption and criminality.

“This award will encourage us to continue making movies relevant to the times,” said the couple, thanking Pres. DU30 and the VACC headed by Dante Jimenez.

In line with Pres. DU30’s relentless anti-drug campaign, Carlo and Donna are now shooting Kamandag Ng Droga (the title speaks for itself) with an all-star cast. If memory serves, I think it’s the third local film that seriously tackles the drug menace, after Premiere Productions’ Ako’y Alipin ng Opio (with Johnny Montero) and Sa Piling ng Mga Sugapa starring Mat Ranillo III and directed by Gil M. Portes, inspired by the landmark exposé of the late crime reporter and presidential spokesman Rod Reyes (during the Erap Administration) who infiltrated a drug den disguised as a drug addict.

At the peak of the “massacre films” popularity, the Golden Couple produced movies based on true-life heinous such as The Vizconde Massacre 1 and 2 (which made Kris Aquino a Box-Office Queen), The Cecilia Masagca Story, The Lipa Massacre (with Vilma Santos and Joel Torre), The Lilian Velez Story (with Sharon Cuneta), Humanda Ka Meyor (about a mayor now serving sentence at the National Penitentiary for rape-murder), and The Maggie dela Riva Story (with Dawn Zulueta and others).

Carlo and Donna ignored their detractors who accused them of “bastardizing” the industry, forgetting that every producer has his/her own choice what movies to make, and they were soon vindicated when most of their “massacre” movies actually led to the arrest of suspects. Now you know why the VACC recognized the Golden Couple’s efforts.

Before Kamandag Ng Droga, Carlo and Donna have actually put to can Miracles Are Forever, an all-star-cast trilogy based on El Shaddai head Bro. Mike Velarde’s best-selling book — A Mother’s Story (with Assunta de Rossi and Ryan Eigenmann), about a long-suffering wife whose suicide attempt was saved by Velarde whom she saw on TV; To Love and To Live (with Yassi Pressman and Mark Neumann), about a cancer-stricken young man restored to health by strong faith; and The Mamasapano Untold Story (with Richard Gutierrez, John Arcilla and CJ Caparas as the lone survivor of that infamous massacre).

“Faith can move mountains,” said Donna. “The stories in Bro. Mike’s book actually happened. The stories are about people who believe in miracles.”

Yet to be shown mainstream, Miracles Are Forever has been drawing crowds, mostly El Shaddai devotees, in countries abroad, a big hit just like the book that inspired it.

Recalled Carlo, “When I was shooting some scenes with Bro. Mike, I lost my voice so I relayed my instructions to my assistant directors. I wrote them on pieces of papers or texted them. But when I took a bowl of soup which Bro. Mike told me to, I instantly felt relief. I regained my voice and headed for the set.”

That, too, was a little miracle.

Inspiring little stories Here are “Six Little Stories” that should give Funfare readers food for thought, contributed by my good friend Narciso Chan:

Once upon a time, all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer, everybody gathered but only one boy came with an umbrella. That’s FAITH.

When you throw a baby in the air, it laughs because it knows you will catch it. That’s TRUST.

Every night, we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning but still we set the alarm clock to wake us up. That’s HOPE.

We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That’s CONFIDENCE.

We see the world suffering but still we get married. That’s LOVE.

On an old man’s shirt was written a cute sentence: “I am not 60 years old. I am sweet 16 with 44 years experience.” That’s ATTITUDE.

Now that you’ve been blessed, don’t be stingy with the blessing; share them with six friends. That’s CARING.

‘Someone To Watch Over Me’ premieres tonight on GMA posted September 04, 2016 at 05:59 pm by Isah V. Red

In ‘Someone to Watch Over Me,’ Tom Rodriguez plays TJ, who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, while Lovi Poe plays his dedicated wife

GMA Network brings to primetime television the original and compelling series Someone To Watch Over Me beginning tonight.

The drama tackles the story of a wife’s unwavering love for her husband who is suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Someone To Watch Over Me is headlined by versatile Kapuso actor Tom Rodriguez, beautiful and talented actress Max Collins and Kapuso Premier actress Lovi Poe.

Tom breathes life to the character of TJ Chavez, a playful and outgoing guy who falls madly in love with Joanna. He and his wife will face their biggest setback when he is diagnosed with the rare disorder.

Tom says he becomes even more interested in the story as he studies about his character. “Actually, habang inaaral ko siya, mas na-e-excite ako na makita kung saan pupunta yung kuwento, kasi nga yung character ko is hindi siya biglang milagrong gagaling. So, it’s exciting to see where it goes,” Tom said.

Lovi is Joanna Mercado, the compassionate wife of TJ. She will do everything for her sick husband even allowing Irene into their lives and into their home. As Irene receives all of TJ’s love and affection, Joanna acts as TJ’s nurse who takes care of his needs.

Max Collins as Irene Montenegro, TJ's ex-girlfriend

Portraying the role of Joanna is indeed another challenge for Lovi because it pushes her outside her comfort zone. She said,

“Yes, iiyak na naman ako ng sobra. Pero kasi I look at this positively. It makes me explore kung hanggang saan yung kaya kong gawin. Nakaka-excite kasi it’s gonna be a whole new me in this series. But, I’m really thankful kasi sa lahat naman ng binibigay nila sa akin na projects, masaya ako dun. And the thought na they’re trusting me with this is something I want to make sure that I give my best kasi hindi biro yung mga roles na ino-offer sa akin ng GMA.”

Max plays the role of Irene Montenegro, TJ’s ex-girlfriend. She tries to stay away from TJ but he keeps seeking her as he no longer recognizes Joanna, his wife.

Edu Manzano as TJ’s hardworking father, Buddy Chavez

She shares that portraying Irene is undeniably a milestone for her since this series is different from her projects before. “Big step talaga ito sa acting career ko since iba ito sa lahat ng nagampanan ko nang roles before. And with Tom, Lovi and Direk Maryo’s help, I hope to get through this gracefully. ”

Joining Tom, Max and Lovi are Edu Manzano as TJ’s hardworking father, Buddy Chavez; Jackie Lou Blanco as Cielo Chavez, TJ’s loving and supportive mother; Isay Alvarez and Ronnie Lazaro as Carmen and Ruben Mercado, Joanna’s kind-hearted parents; Boy 2 Quizon as Paolo, TJ’s chick-magnet best friend; Ralph Noriega as Jepoy Mercado, the cheerful younger brother of Joanna; and Frances Makil as Joanna’s frank best friend.

Jackie Lou Blanco as Cielo Chavez, TJ’s loving and supportive mother

How far can Joanna still go and what else is she willing to do for her ill husband? Will TJ continue fighting for his love for Irene or will he finally remember Joanna as his wife and as someone who stayed with him despite his sickness and her pain?

Maryo J. Delos Reyes directs.

Catch the intriguing story of love’s presence in the absence of memories in Someone To Watch Over Me, Monday to Friday after Descendants of the Sun on GMA Telebabad.
