HIGH HOPES FOR LOCAL CINEMA WITH LIZA DIÑO AS NEW FILM DEVPT COUNCIL CHIEF

[Liza Diño (born Mary Liza Diño) is a beauty titlist and multi-awarded actress in the Philippines. Her spouse is singer songwriter Aiza Seguerra.]

AUGUST 16 - In this age of social media and the global village, the reach of film has quintupled, the market of ideas has grown by leaps and bounds. Anna C, 23, loves film with all her heart. But this millennial is tired of watching the same old commercial stories in Philippine cinema.
She wants something that will keep her on the edge of her seat, and take her to places she’s never been to. In other words, she’s raring for something new. The word "new" is a loose term that covers the cornerstones of film: plot, character, editing, even production design. Busy Anna has only enough to see one film, so she wants to make it worth her while. She believes in the saying “If you build it, it will come.” She thinks the audience is all prepped for the film revolution she and her friends deserve. Anna insists they’re just waiting in the wings, ready to cheer on the next good project that comes along. It will be her and husband Robin Padilla’s first child, and Robin’s sixth (one with ex-girlfriend Lea Orosa and four with ex-wife Liezl Sicangco). The baby’s gender was revealed last Saturday, Aug. 13, during a triple celebration for the couple’s sixth wedding anniversary (Aug. 19), Mariel’s 32nd birthday and revelation of the baby’s gender (done with a golden box which contained an Aprica pink stroller). The event was hosted by Japanese Stroller brand Aprica, the same company that also sponsored the baby shower for James Yap and girlfriend Michela Cazzola who gave birth to a boy named Michael James last Aug. 8. Among the guests were expectant moms Toni Gonzaga (giving birth to her and husband Paul Soriano’s first child in a few weeks’ time), Rufa Mae Quinto (who is said to be in “an interesting stage” courtesy of her Fil-Am boyfriend), and Shalani Soledad with husband former Congressman Roman Romulo who should have a child by now, four years after they got married. High hopes for local cinema with Liza Diño as new FDCP chief

MANILA, AUGUST 22, 2016 (PHILSTAR) By Maridol Ranoa-Bismark August 16, 2016 - In this age of social media and the global village, the reach of film has quintupled, the market of ideas has grown by leaps and bounds.

It is Anna and her fellow millennials new FDCP (Film Development Council of the Philippines) chair Liza Diño must have in mind when she posted a Facebook message last Sunday to ask for suggestions on how to run the office.

“I’d like to know how Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) can be of help to the community,” she said.

The award-winning actress wanted to hit the ground running.

NETIZENS SUGGESTIONS

Netizens rewarded her with a deluge of suggestions.

Some lobbied the granting of subsidies for quality indie films. Others asked for better film education through literacy forums, trainers’ training in barangays, loaning of informative materials to schools.

Liza likes Cyril Villarente Galleros’ idea of requiring the use of Filipino products on screen. The FDCP chair promised to check out film producer Ramoncito Herrera’s report that no one was willing to insure the high-quality cameras he wanted to use for a quality film. Worst, the cameras were barred from entering the country.

The FDCP chair also agreed that a midnight cut-off for film/TV shoots and tapings is important. Young, respected directors have paid the cost of long working hours and too much stress with their lives. We can’t afford to lose more precious lives in the name of production deadlines.

Liza’s answer to Anna is decentralization. Get more stories from the country’s various regions, which she believes is a rich source of talent.

Now that we elected somebody from Mindanao – President Rodrigo Duterte – to the highest office in the land, we might as well look to our brothers and sisters beyond Metro Manila, for good ideas in making films.

While we’re on the subject of the president, let’s also remember that if he approved the holding of an international pageant in our country, the Miss Universe, we can also attract global attention to the Philippine film industry in our own way as well.

We can summon the Lino Brockas and Brillante Mendozas in our midst to come up with what Liza calls is a self-sustaining local environment that doesn’t need overseas recognition to gain attention.

Six years is more than enough to rev up the engine of the local film industry. It’s a huge task, and Liza herself admits feeling overwhelmed.

But the avalanche of feedback from netizens shows she’s not alone in her lily-white intentions. Anna C and her generation are raring to help. Their elders are just as willing to lend a hand.

Liza Diño (born Mary Liza Diño) is a beauty titlist and multi-awarded actress in the Philippines. Her spouse is Singer songwriter Aiza Seguerra. FROM WIKIPEDIA

After all, film is about a people’s soul. It’s something no one can take away from us because it’s what our fathers and forefathers molded us to become.

Liza has reason to feel overwhelmed. But she has every reason to feel excited, too.

In this age of social media and the global village, the reach of film has quintupled, the market of ideas has grown by leaps and bounds.

Netizen Jamie Esteva Wilson points out that trainers can use YouTube to show tutorials about film’s technical aspects. The market of ideas for film is broader, flow of information, faster.

This means leaders can apply ideas faster, start programs earlier and see them through much better.

It’s an exciting time for Filipino films. It’s a great time to mine the Filipino soul and use the magic of the silver screen to show what wonders await anyone who wants to find out what the Philippines and its people are all about.

“At first,” Mariel was heard telling guests, “I wanted a boy kasi marami nang girls si Robin. But when I learned that it’s a girl, I realized that the baby is really for me. God knows na girl naman talaga ang gusto ko.”

There were games during the event, such as cake slicing (like in a wedding reception), guessing game (what’s in Mariel’s purse?) and baby-bottle drinking contest (with the Padillas joining to finish a baby-bottleful of iced tea).

The “Mariel or Robin” Q&A portion was fun.

• Who wakes up first?

Answer: Mariel (because she wakes up Robin to pray).

• Who cooks?

Answer: Mariel (who learned how to cook after they got married).

• Who says “I love you” first?

Answer: Mariel.

Because Robin doesn’t take alcohol, guests sipped mocktails during the champagne toast.

Next month, Mariel will be given a baby shower before she flies to the US for her date with the stork.

Alden Richards won’t be with Maine Mendoza when she goes to L.A. to watch the concert of Coldplay.

Confirmed: Maine Mendoza is leaving this weekend for L.A. to watch the concert of Coldplay whose front man is Chris Martin, the ex-husband of Gwyneth Paltrow. Remember how they described their breakup? Yes, “conscious uncoupling.” Creative, isn’t it?

Funfare Update confirmed this piece of good news from no less than Tony “Mr. T.” Tuviera of APT Productions, producer of Eat, Bulaga! and Imagine You & Me, the first solo starrer of Maine and Alden Richards.

Mr. T recalled that when they were shooting the movie in Italy, they got wind that Coldplay, which is Maine’s favorite, was having a concert “somewhere in Europe.” But due to time constraints, Maine wasn’t able to watch it.

“So I told Maine that on Coldplay’s next concert, I will make sure that she could watch it,” said Mr. T. “I promised to pay for her airfare.”

“Basta malakas,” was all he would say.

Now, is Alden going with Maine to L.A.?

Funfare Update purposely didn’t ask Mr. T. why he and his son, director Mike Tuviera, met with Kris Aquino recently, with the dinner lasting for several hours.

Instead, I texted Kris what the “real score” was.

This photo from the Instagram of Kris Aquino shows her having dinner recently with APT Productions big boss Antonio ‘Mr. T.’ Tuviera and his son, director Mike Tuviera, making people wonder what they were cooking up. Now it can be told…

Confirmed: Mr. T. is now Kris’ manager.

“Mr. Tuviera and Boy Abunda are co-managing me,” Kris clarified.

Asked what her first project under Mr. T would be, Kris was mum.

“Let us surprise you,” she said.

Oh well, let’s stay tuned.

Even if she was suffering from a pinched nerve on her left shoulder, Kris Aquino said she had to cut short her bed rest to be among those who cut the ribbon at the inauguration of Anthony Taberna and his wife Rossel’s Ka Tunying restaurant on Timog Avenue, right across from GMA.

“I love the couple,” said Kris. “They are true friends.”

Then, she begged the media guys around, “Please don’t ask me about anything because I might say anything that I can’t remember at hindi ko naman madi-deny. You see, I’ve been taking several kinds of medicines at baka kung ano pa ang masabi ko.”

She must have been referring to her ex-husband James Yap whose girlfriend Michela Cazzola gave birth to a baby boy (named Michael James) Monday last week. Everybody is curious about how Kris felt about it but, so sorry, she’d rather keep mum for now. Michael James is James’ third child, coming after another boy with his non-showbiz girlfriend and Bimby, with Kris.

“It happened Tuesday night after I went home from an uncle’s 82nd birthday,” recalled Kris how the pain started. “Tiniis ko lang until it became migraine. I began throwing up on the way home. My blood pressure went up to 171/108, so I had to call my neurologist.”

Incidentally, Ka Tunying’s is located nearer GMA than ABS-CBN must have spawned the rumor that Kapamilya Anthony is turning Kapuso.

“I am not,” said Anthony who noted that yesterday’s inauguration was graced by guests from all networks. “All Kapamilya, Kapuso, Kapatid, Kasama are welcome,” added Anthony.

The younger Duterte, who is married to lawyer Manases Carpio, is seven weeks into her second pregnancy, and apologized to her constituents for being unable to celebrate the Kadayawan Festival with them yesterday.

She was doing well although her situation was not easy, Sara Duterte said. “The human body is made to carry just one baby and I am experiencing threefold all the pregnancy symptoms that a woman goes through,” she added.

Duterte’s pregnancy was the result of in vitro fertilization (IVF) because she had difficulty conceiving the normal way, her information officer said. Her son, Sting, was also the result of IVF, an assisted reproductive technology that involves manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. The resulting fertilized egg is then transferred to the uterus.

“I am having a hard time with the symptoms as well as the complications of a multifetal pregnancy,” the mayor said, adding that she would continue to work as long as her doctors allowed her to. But she had also been advised to avoid crowded places to minimize the risks of infections, she said.

“I may be physically weak but rest assured that I am on top of the situation here in our city,” the younger Duterte said. With a report from Allan Nawal, Inquirer Mindanao/TVJ
