BILLY CRAWFORD HAS NO QUALMS ABOUT PLAYING A GAY
[RELATED: Film review - When straight guys go gay]

AUGUST 9 -Billy Crawford as his tattooed real self (certified heterosexual) and (right) as the closet gay security guard in Regal Films’ "That Thing Called Tanga Na".-
Curtain-raisers: • Congratulations to a celebrity couple who got married in quiet civil ceremony end of last month. The wedding capped a romance talked about in whispers (but not spared by social media) because they were then finalizing the annulment of their respective marriages. They have kids with their ex-spouses. • Did a sexy TV actress really think that getting involved with a very much married man (who has clout in showbiz) would boost her career? Said the mother of the actress-wife of the man, “Because she destroyed the family of my daughter, hayan na-karma…hindi uma-abante ang career.”  • Accompanied by a network handler, a sexy starlet flew to a neighboring Asian city thinking she would be meeting and greeting OFWs. Before the event, she was told to take everything that she wanted from a high-end store — a bag, a pair of shoes, etc., all branded. She didn’t know that the items were charged to a politician who wanted to meet her. What happened to the meet-and-greet? “Nothing,” laughed the group that set up the starlet. And the branded items? If you were in the starlet’s shoes, would you return them? • To those wondering why Maja Salvador has been “missing” from FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, here’s Cory Vidanes, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of ABS-CBN: Maja’s participation in the teleserye was really good only until end of July because she has other commitments. * * * Because he is sure of himself (sexual preference and all), Billy Crawford has no qualms about playing a gay in Regal Films’ riotous “gender-friendly” comedy That Thing Called Tanga Na, which is opening nationwide on Wednesday, Aug. 10, as a nod to the LGBT community. It’s actually Billy’s balik-Regal starrer. As a kid, he starred with Rudy Fernandez in Sandakot na Bala (1988) and as the son of Vilma Santos in Pahiram ng Umaga which won Billy his first Guillermo Mendoza Best Child Actor Award.

Meanwhile, here are the “who, what, where, when, how” about Billy.

Who

• Who is the person that you look up to?

“My dad. He’s the one that pretty much taught me everything — being professional at work, being a good person in general, just being a respectful man, and you know, the typical morals of a young child. My dad was pretty strict and pretty firm with us growing up.”

• Who is Billy Crawford away from the public eye?

“I’m exactly the same as you see me on-cam. I’m jolly, I like to mess around, I’m a fun bully, I’m just a regular human being who makes mistakes from time to time.”

• Who do you turn to when you’re feeling low?

“Coleen (Garcia).”

What

• What’s one of your traits that you can’t control?

“My temper, perhaps.”

• What’s the greatest thing that you’ve done for love?

“Maybe just giving my all, like what I’m doing now.”

• What kind of wedding do you want to have, if and when?

“I actually came from a wedding last night. It was a beautiful wedding — really intimate, friends and family. It wasn’t too glamorous. Of course, whatever my girl would want for her wedding, especially since it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. So, to sum it up, I want it simple and intimate. That makes it more meaningful.”

Where

• Where are you most at home in?

“I’m most at home at home — with my family and my girl.”

• Where do you go to relax (unwind)?

“I just go to the beach, like what Coleen and I did in Maldives and Phuket. If I can’t travel, I just stay home and watch series after series from time to time.”

• Where is your Achilles’ Heel?

“My weak spot? If it’s literal, maybe my heart. But if we’re being figurative, maybe it’s when my family’s going through something.”

When

• When did you lose your innocence (to a younger woman, older woman or woman your age)?

“Who says I lost my innocence? I’m still innocent.” (Laughs)

• When was the last time you saw yourself nude?

“This morning, earlier in the shower.”

• When are you at your happiest, at your saddest?

“I’m happiest when I’m with my girl. That’s definitely my happiest. My saddest moments are being away from my parents.”

How

• How can you tell if you are seriously in love?

“When every time you see that person, you have butterflies in your stomach, like the first time you guys met. That’s when you know.”

• How do you make a girl (in your case, Coleen) feel important?

“On a daily basis, you know, you just got to give her compliments, be really vocal and proud and shout to the world that you love that girl.”

• How do you mend a broken heart (if ever you have experienced it)?

“Stop, think and move the hell on.”

Every frame of the film — starring Eric Quizon, Billy Crawford, Mart Escudero, Kean Cipriano and Angeline Quinto — guarantees reckless guffaws

When straight guys go gay By Pablo A. Tariman (The Philippine Star) | Updated August 13, 2016 - 12:00am 0 79 googleplus0 0

Film review: That Thing Called Tanga Na Joel Lamangan’s latest film outing That Thing Called Tanga Na is easily living sociology on the evolution of gay relationships in the country.

In the Lino Brocka film, Tubog Sa Ginto some decades back, gay relationships are hidden specially if the partner is married. The role of the “straight” husband played by Eddie Garcia was a landmark film in the early ‘70s and it earned for the Bicolano actor several awards.

In direk Joel’s new film penned by Senedy Que, the case of the threesome relationships is once again explored and indeed they have drastically evolved through the years.

The husband’s third party (a gay partner) has become acceptable to the wife when she learned the “mistress” shares the major part of the family expenses. He is rewarded with more time for the husband and even a baby on which he can imagine himself as “fulfilled mother.” The third party even postpones his sex transplant plan in order to tide up the family of his lover.

The stuff of This Thing Called Tanga Na is romance-cum-comedy and parody.

Director Joel Lamangan

The successful designer (Kean Cipriano) wins back his high school crush who got married to his best friend. When friend finally found the love of his life, he agrees to do the bridal gown provided he spends the night with the ex-lover.

Gay obsession is parodied in the film with one character seen with oversized crotch and thus becoming the object of everyone’s obvious (and hidden) desires.

Tales of unrequited love and romance (narrated as comedic episodes) spice up the movie and the character of Eric Quizon as the married gay (and father of one) has all the dramatic, if, funny lines, most of which were culled from popular movies. The funniest one had Eric watching a Sister Stella L. film and paraphrasing the line calling for action as he mulls break up with his young lover (Albie Casiño).

And to illustrate that the couples in the film narrative are actually existing, the film goes documentary by featuring testimonials from true-to-life gay couples like Aiza Seguerra and Liza Diño and filmmakers Perci Intalan and Jun Lana, among others. They confirm the highs and lows of gay relationships and what they find rewarding in a union still frowned upon in some sectors.

Vangie Labalan as the mother of a gay son is a virtual riot as she ransacks the house of her son’s lover (Billy Crawford, the security guard) and ululating her anguish in the funeral parlor and later in the cemetery.

On the whole, the film expounds on the assorted gay types like the father and ex-husband (Eric), the beauty parlor kind (Mart Escudero), the successful designer (Kean) and the gay security guard (Billy).

The winners in the film are the straight actors who managed to look genuinely gay at least for an hour and a half. Kean and Billy are outrageously funny as they left their true male personas to look the part. Their antics and outrageously witty scenes had premiere night audiences rolling on the floor with laughter.

The women in the cast add to the sense of gay liberation. The betrayed wife (Nikki Valdez) confronts her husband’s lover only to realize the third party is the virtual source of income of her husband.

The poor wife who wanted to become a singer (Angeline Quinto) is likewise helpless over the determined move of best friend (Kean) to acquire her partner.

The film is a funny update on gay relationships and indeed, every frame of the movie is an invitation to reckless guffaws.

At some point, the movie needed some restraint and some ounce of subtlety to send a message.

The gifted hunk shown with oversized crotch need not be that obvious although, of course, one could see it was pure parody.

To be sure, the movie has moments of truth about gay relationships which could be disconcerting to some (like that scene showing a woman who made a sign of the cross when she saw two men kissing in public).

It succeeds as fun film and even as it is quite overcautious not to experiment anything beyond comedy.

After all, the joy of comedy is to realize something deeper after you have unleashed your last guffaw.

That Thing Called Tanga Na produced by Regal Films is now showing in cinemas.

At 50-something, Gabby Concepcion can still give younger leading men a run for their money PHILSTAR FILE

CEBU, Philippines - For Gabby Concepcion, story is king. The 80s matinee idol won’t be bothered with ill-conceived material, grabbing only those offers that excite him from the get-go.

You could say he felt that flutter of excitement upon reading the script of “Because of You,” GMA-7’s currently airing romantic-comedy in the evening primetime slot, which the actor stars in alongside Carla Abellana, Rafael Rosell and Valerie Concepcion.

“The moment I read the script, I really loved the storyline,” Gabby says during an interview at Abaseria restaurant in Barangay Mabolo during the recent Sinulog weekend. “It’s just like reading a book. If you like what you’re reading, than you’re going to finish the entire thing.”

“Then we had a formal meeting with the entire cast, and all the ingredients were complete. It’s different from all the other dramas that I’ve done.”

This is Gabby’s first project with the Kapuso network since his 2008 showbiz comeback, though he says he then had a movie deal with GMA-7 that he backed out of due to some creative concerns on his part that weren’t addressed.

This time around, the former “Close-up boy” has nothing but praise for the light fare offered to him towards yearend of 2015.

'Because Of You' Is Now Called The Gab-Car Love Team Gabby Concepcion And Carla Abellana's Hit Tandem

“‘Because of You’ came at a very good time. When I arrived in 2008, I told myself I needed to do something different. So I started singing and came out with an album,” he shares.

“Last year, I was thinking, I didn’t want to do another all-out drama, since that’s what I’ve been doing for a long time now. Sometimes, you need to do something different, right? It’s even said that a person should reinvent every five years because the body changes every five years: our hair, our blood, our skin, it all changes.”

In “Because of You,” Gabby is Jaime, a dapper fashion tycoon married to a bored former beauty queen (Valerie Concepcion). The pampered wife wants out, and it’s during these trying times that Jaime bumps into Andrea (Carla), a brokenhearted orphan whose one great desire is to fill up the emptiness of having been left alone by her parents.

On the best feedback he’s heard so far about “Because of You,” Gabby shares, “That the characters are on point. Even the barkada of Carla is funny, and even my bodyguard is gaining notice. There are a lot of sub-stories where we can induce laughs. And these aren’t forced or the slapstick kind.”

Living in the now

In selecting scripts, Gabby says he always goes by gut feel, and contributes what he can to the betterment of a story.

“I don’t know what it is, but I can feel it. Even if everything I want aren’t in there, but if I can see there are elements that can be improved on…if during first reading, I feel it’s good, I say that we should develop it. If there’s something to improve on, we fix it,” says Gabby.

As he’s already done offbeat roles in the 90s (“I was a villain in a movie with Rudy Fernandez, Bong Revilla and Philip Salvador.”), Gabby says that these days, he pines for characters that are “finding themselves.”

“For example, a guy who was in an accident and wakes up not knowing who he is so he finds himself…something like that. That happened to me in ‘Una Ka Naging Akin,’ but just very briefly. I regained my memories right away,” he says.

And as much as he’d love to reunite with former leading ladies including Lorna Tolentino, Vilma Santos, Snooky Serna, Dawn Zulueta and Janice de Belen, Gabby is also eager to test his chemistry with new generation stars like Jennylyn Mercado and Marian Rivera or try his comedic chops with AiAi delas Alas.

All these are just thinking out loud though for Gabby, for he says he’s no longer that actor who maps out his moves for the long term. “My life came to a point…my idea of being in showbiz is, I take one project at a time,” the father of five explains. “I no longer plan what my next projects are, because we don’t know when they come, unless I myself produce it. I tried producing before and it’s difficult, so I’ll just stick to being an actor. My life now is one day at a time. And that’s the nice thing about it: the mystery and not knowing what’s going to happen.”

All-girl brood

Gorgeous Half-Sister of KC Concepcion Joins The Miss Universe Sweden!

Still a looker at 51, Gabby insists there’s really nothing fancy or complicated in maintaining his youthful, dreamboat features all these years.

“Thanks to my genes!” he shyly grins, before seriously adding, “I think number one is to really moisturize. I rarely visit the derma in the United States, and I was there for 13 years, but I really moisturized.”

But maybe he also has his all-girl brood to thank? Females, after all, love to take care of the man in their lives, as Gabby himself attests.

“Oh, I’m so lucky to have all girls!” exclaims Gabby, referring to his five daughters: KC (with Sharon Cuneta), Garrie (with Grace Ibuna), Cloie (with Jenny Syquia) and Samantha Alexis and Savannah (with current wife Genevieve Gonzalez). “Because girls take care of their parents.” (FREEMAN)
