AUGUST 1 --Perhaps very few, if at all, among the 400-plus guests at Sen. Grace Poe and husband Neil Llamanzares’ 25th wedding anniversary dinner last Wednesday, July 27, in Makati City, noticed that Helen Gamboa shed quiet tears when Grace went onstage to thank her colleagues at the Senate. One by one, Grace acknowledged the presence of Senators Frank Drilon (with wife Mila), Chiz Escudero (minus wife Heart Evangelista; he opted to be inconspicuous at one corner of the venue), Sonny Angara, Win Gatchalian, Joel Villanueva and former Sen. She paused for a few seconds as she held back tears before she proceeded, saying, “Wala na si Papa,” referring to her late father FPJ, “and it was Sen. Selena Gomez

We were among those initially dismissive of Selena Gomez’s career as singer, deeming it mere knee-jerk reaction of a Hollywood star-maker eager to milk her success as TV personality.

We could go to great lengths explaining our stance but who would care, really? In any case, we were actually hoping her recent Manila concert would change our mind but it didn’t.

No doubt about it though, Gomez has grown by leaps and bounds since we were first introduced to her by some intrepid young fan via episodes of “Barney And Friends” and, of course, “Wizards Of Waverly Place.”

She was just a cute little girl with the weird nasal voice and knack for comedy; now, she’s selling albums by the millions. Who would’ve thought?

Not a girl, not yet a woman

For years now, Gomez has been trying to bury her bubbly-teen-next-door image with much effort, appearing scantily clad in numerous photos, not excluding the cover spread of her “Revival” album.

The concert allowed for pretty much the same, with the singer alternating tight-fitting leather pants, short shorts, and peek-a-boo numbers, including one where her chest was covered by nothing but a square patch of cloth.

She upped the sex-factor executing suggestive dance moves with her back-up dancers but at 24, Gomez still exudes too much teenage innocence.

All the hits

Selena Gomez

Gomez didn’t leave anything untouched during the shindig, performing even some old tunes along the way, like “Who Says” and “Love You Like A Love Song,” both from 2011’s “When The Sun Goes Down,” her third and last studio album with her band The Scene.

At one point, Gomez even channeled her inner Annie Lennox, performing a rocking version of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),” which, surprisingly, actually sounded more Marilyn Manson than the Eurythmics.

Among most applauded numbers, however, were performances of her more recent singles including the flirty “Hands To Myself,” the anthemic “Same Old Love” and the bouncy “Kill Em With Kindness.”

We weren’t surprised to hear the crowd sing-along with Gomez even engaging the singer in call-and-answer moments particularly on the choruses.

Up close and personal

Gomez performed with gusto throughout the concert, seemingly intent on making sure her fans got their money’s worth.

She was noticeably distant though, not even allowing for simple handslaps with those in the pit right in front of the stage, a far cry from past tour stops where she is seen hobnobbing with fans as evidenced in photos she has been posting on Instagram.

Selena with Liza Soberano (Instagram)

Well, there were some lucky ones who got to rub shoulders with Gomez, most of them local showbiz celebs. They included Liza Soberano who promptly posted a photo of the meeting on social media, and actress Louise delos Reyes, who we overheard crowing about her meeting with the pop star prior to the show.

Wondering if the average fan also got the chance to meet Gomez, we asked around but not one could say they did. Maybe they could just wait for her next visit as Gomez did promise onstage she’d be back.

The whole show ended under an hour, with most of the kids surrounding us looking satisfied and that’s good enough.

On our part, we now look at Gomez with deeper appreciation. Sure, we still think of her a cookie-cutter pop star, but she does put a lot of effort in her act and that is something commendable indeed, particularly for someone spoilt for career choices. What made Helen cry at Grace-Neil event? FUNFARE UPDATE By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star) | Updated August 1, 2016 - 12:00am 0 2 googleplus0 0

Perhaps very few, if at all, among the 400-plus guests at Sen.

Serge Osmeña.

That was when Helen, who was sharing a table with husband Tito Sen, former Pres./Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada and Drilon, cried silently, gently wiping tears. Helen, who was among FPJ’s leading ladies, probably remembered how Tito Sen fought for Grace when she was attacked by detractors.

“I couldn’t help it,” said Helen who calls Grace’s mom Susan Roces, Ate Sue. “Grace is like a daughter to Tito and me.”

As soon as she recovered herself, Grace continued to thank other guests that included members of the MTRCB (which she used to head before she quit to run in last May’s presidential election), former classmates at Assumption, businessmen and showbiz friends (including Coco Martin, Zoren Legaspi and wife Carmina Villarroel, MTRCB chief Toto Villareal, Regal Matriarch Mother Lily Monteverde with daughter Roselle, Tony “Mr. T” Tuviera with wife Mads, Marichu “Manay Ichu” Maceda, ABS-CBN head Carlo Katigbak and Charo Santos-Concio with ABS-CBN executive Deo Endrinal).

Grace and Neil opted to spend the night with music and laughter, somewhat like a reunion with family members and friends.

For a while, I thought Helen would join the roster of singers (Rico J. Puno and Martin Nievera, among them) and sing Thirty First of June, one of her hits. If she did, I’m sure she would have cried some more.

Hail to the Queen of Sexy posted July 31, 2016 at 05:50 pm by Nickie Wang

Three-time Sexiest Woman Marian Rivera is inducted into FHM Hall of Fame. Sonny Espiritu

Some of the sexiest female personalities descended on Valkyrie Night Club on Tuesday night for the annual FHM 100 Sexiest Women Victory Party.

From the magazine’s July cover girl Rhian Ramos, who finally agreed to appear in the magazine’s spread after a seven-year courtship, to its first issue cover girl Sunshine Cruz, the popular men’s glossy had staged a night full of firsts including three-time Sexiest Woman Marian Rivera being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Noticeably, this year’s Victory Party was a lot more tamed compared to last year’s BroCon and to the previous years that FHM celebrated the so-called sexiest convention.

But the extravaganza did not run out of models and performers wearing economically challenged dresses and costumes that left almost nothing to our imagination. Most of the personalities who graced the event to accept their 100 Sexiest Women trophy were dressed in a way that the male dominated crowd did not expect.

The big names were no longer bedecked in lingerie. The women who made it to this year’s sexiest list walked to the center of the stage wearing elegant dresses rather than revealing bikinis.

This made us remember what Rhian Ramos told us in an interview: “I just feel like the readers of FHM now are just the kind of guys that I would want to put myself in front of. I love their content, it’s intelligent and you could learn a lot. They’ve really shifted more for what the millennials will find sexy.”

The sexiest of them all. Jessy Mendiola tops this year’s FHM 100 Sexiest poll with more than half a million votes. Sonny Espiritu

According to FHM’s Allan Hernandez, the magazine has been around for 16 years and they feel that its imperative to tweak the magazine—it’s general content—to embody smarter and sharper philosophy.

Although most of the names that made it to the top 10, like last year’s no. 1 and this year’s no. 2, Jennylyn Mercado, top 3 and top 4 finishers Nadine Lustre and Angel Locsin, were all no show, the Victory Party was still a star-studded affair.

Some of the recognizable names and definitely crowd favorites were model and TV host Kim Domingo, volleyball star Rachel Anne Daquis, former beauty queen Queenrich Rehman, Brazilian model Daiana Menezes, former PBB housemate Dawn Chang, dancers Arny Ross and Rochelle Pangilinan, Kapuso darling Sam Pinto and Kapamilya star Bangs Garcia.

THIS YEAR'S 'QUEEN OF SEXY'

But time almost stopped when the program reached its culmination—the announcement of this year’s “Queen of Sexy.”

Clad in a fiery red one-piece ensemble, led the women who stunned the crowd with their appearances and performances of Rhiana’s “This Is What You Came For,” Jessy Mendiola amazed the crowd and literally made everyone fix their eyes on her the whole time she was on the stage.

The 23-year-old ABS-CBN star led this year’s poll with 589,792 votes, after placing 23rd last year.

July cover girl Rhian Ramos ranks number 5 this year, after placing 86 the year before. Sonny Espiritu

Feeling dumbfounded, she addressed the crowd, “I can’t believe this has happened. Kung si Pia Wurtzbach eh confidently beautiful with a heart, tayo ay confidently sexy with a heart,” referring to the reigning Miss Universe’s, who also made it to the top 20, iconic answer in the prestigious pageant.

The sexiest women title almost came as Jessy’s reward after all the body shaming she experienced on social media of late. Some netizens and trolls call her fat and undeserving of the title.

In an interview with Manila Standard, the actress just expressed her gratitude and called her victory a testament that sexiness is subjective and confidence and self-love are arguably the sexiest quality a woman can have, and that a woman should still feel beautiful and appealing no matter what her shape is.

Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson together again By: Dolly Anne Carvajal @inquirerdotnet Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:20 AM July 27th, 2016

GERALD Anderson (left) and Bea Alonzo

Balancing love and career is a tricky thing. We must love our work, and work on on our love life as well. That is the central point of Star Cinema’s latest movie, “How to Be Yours” topbilled by Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson (opens today). They had a thwarted romance in 2010. As the cliché goes, it was the right love at the wrong time. Since they are former sweethearts, there is nothing contrived about their onscreen chemistry. Both single now, perhaps the more appropriate title for their movie is “How Soon Can I Be Yours.”

Here’s my tête-à-tête with Bea.

If a suitor asks you what it would take for you to be his, what would you tell him?

Just be yourself. No pretensions.

What do you remember most about your short-lived romance with Gerald?

It was fun. I was carefree, stupid and in love.

Would you rather be single or in a relationship?

Right now, I’d rather be single. But soon, I do want to be in a relationship again.

How do you handle the temporary nature of fame?

I do not let fame drastically change my lifestyle.

If you were to shoot your last movie, who would you want to be paired with?

Since my first screen partner was John Lloyd (Cruz), it would be nice to also have him as my last leading man.

* * *

Here’s my chat with Gerald:

What things do you love and hate about being a bachelor?

I love how I can just focus on myself and not think about what a girlfriend needs. I hate the occasional lonely nights.

What did you learn from your short-lived romance with Bea?

It taught me that commitment is a must in a relationship.

What’s a misconception about you that you want to correct?

I refuse to dwell on the negative things that some people picture me to be. I just want to stay real.

What do you miss most about your GenSan days, when you weren’t famous yet?

Roaming around in slippers, hanging out at the sari-sari store with my friends, even if we were sweaty from playing basketball all day, chatting till the wee hours of the morning, playing basketball every day.

What is your advice to the current “Pinoy Big Brother” housemates?

Be yourself. Savor every minute of that once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What are your do’s and dont’s when you have a GF?

We should inspire each other. She should lift me up and not wear me down. She must be super understanding because of the nature of my job. She should not be controlling.

Mariel won’t spoil kid DIRECT LINE By Boy Abunda (The Philippine Star) | Updated August 4, 2016 - 12:00am 0 0 googleplus0 0

Mariel Rodriguez is deadset on making sure history doesn’t repeat itself. She’s hell-bent on giving her soon-to-be-born child a home where dad and mom are always together.

When you’ve waited six long years for your first child the way Mariel Rodriguez has, you expect her to smother her baby with all things good and beautiful. You expect her to spoil hers and husband Robin Padilla’s first bundle of joy.

Mariel — bless her — doesn’t believe in spoiling her kid rotten.

“There’s no greater joy than seeing your child happy. Pero para siya lumaking responsible at may respeto, you have to train him or her from the very start. Dapat may takot na balanced naman. I’ll be a disciplinarian,” the expectant mom says.

Mariel, a self-confessed lola’s girl, knows she’ll be doing her future kid a huge favor by using the rod of discipline.

She saw it in older sister Kaye, who got married at 16 and now has four children. Her sister-entrepreneur, gushes Mariel, is her role model as a mom.

Mariel is proud of how Kaye’s kids grew up level-headed and responsible because they were taught good values early on.

“It can be done. You can raise your kids the right way,” insists Mariel.

The challenge for this product of a broken home lies in proving that she can reverse the hand of fate. Mariel is deadset on making sure history doesn’t repeat itself. She’s hell-bent on giving her soon-to-be-born child a home where dad and mom are always together, where all conflicts are resolved before they go out of hand.

It’s the kind of home Mariel would have wanted to grow up in, except that circumstances beyond her control got in the way.

Is her first baby a he or a she?

The Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) host’s lips are sealed — until her 32nd birthday on Aug. 10 comes along.

“I’ll reveal the baby’s gender and name maybe on my birthday,” she declared.

This much Mariel owes fans who cried with her when she had two miscarriages, and jumped up and down for joy when she announced that she was pregnant again.

Gratitude is also the reason why Mariel won’t hide her baby from her adoring public.

“Everyone was there for me. I’ve bumped into people who were really happy for me after everything I’ve been through.

But she also knows where to draw the line between her baby’s privacy and need to grow up healthy and strong. Mariel has decided against allowing anyone — except Robin — to take photos or videos of her newborn.

Like any devoted mom, Mariel was scared stiff after reading an article about a baby who became blind after someone took the infant’s photo with a camera flash.

Although there are conflicting views about this, Mariel is right in choosing to play it safe. She waited years for this baby. Now that he or she will soon be here, Mariel will move heaven and earth to make sure her son or daughter starts life on the right foot.

“A newborn baby’s eyesight isn’t fully developed yet. Not that I’m a snob. But I don’t like other people taking shots of my baby at this point. Sometimes, the one holding the camera forgets to turn off the flash,” she reasons out.

Robin offered Mariel a Plan B: Ask the baby’s well-wishers to take photos of her, not the baby.

Whatever Mariel decides on, one thing’s sure. She’ll post the baby’s pictures on Instagram. She’ll proudly show off videos of the baby Robin took on social media. So there’s no reason to worry or to fret.

It’ll ruin Mariel’s feel-good, on-top-of-the-world vibe.

“I was telling (my PBB co-hosts) Bianca (Gonzales, who now has a baby girl) and Toni (Gonzaga, who’ll also be a mom), ‘God is so great! It would be painful if I don’t have one of my own. God just told me He’ll take care of things, that I can always catch up.’”

BABY COMING ON ROBIN'S BIRTHDAY

Mariel’s faith quantupled when her OB-Gynecologist told her the baby’s expected due date falls on Nov. 23, Robin’s birthday. Gestational diabetes can change the said date, but the fact that the baby is due on his or her dad’s 47th birthday is a big blessing in itself. It means the celebrity couple will mark two birthdays around mid-November this year, and the years thereafter: Their baby’s and Robin’s.

Call it perfect timing. Call it sheer coincidence.

Mariel calls it God’s wonderful timing.

I agree a hundred percent.
