BY RICKY LO: 10 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THE AlDub FLICK

JULY 28 -This is the part of Lake Como where your Funfarer and Giselle ‘G’ Tongi (below, left) took an afternoon stroll, and where Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza’s characters (below) in Imagine You & Me first meet and where Maine tries to stop Alden from taking a ‘suicidal’ leap into the lake.
“I would like to fall in love again!” Like Susan Roces, that must be how the millions who have seen the AlDub movie Imagine You & Me nationwide felt — falling in love all over again. Susan was among those invited by Tony “Mr. T” Tuviera, the movie’s producer, to an exclusive block screening last Saturday at the Directors Club of SM Megamall. Mr. T was mum on how many millions the movie has raked in so far (excluding the projected gross during the international screenings). But judging from his wide, wide smile during an early dinner he and his wife Mads hosted at the Din Tai Fung restaurant (which serves excellent Taiwanese cuisine, at the mall’s ground floor), Mr. T didn’t have to say how much. Anyway, besides what Susan said about making her fall in love again, here are the 10 things that I love about Imagine You & Me: It beautifully describes what a real feel-good movie is. Aside from the smooth direction by Mike Tuviera, the cleverly-written screenplay by Renato Custodio and Aloy Adlawan (who, like me, is a Waray, from Laoang, Northern Samar), that reminded me of Love Story (what can you say about a young girl who dies?), An Affair To Remember (a girl not showing up on a crucial date with no rhyme nor reason), Gone Girl (clues in the form of pieces of a broken heart made of glass) and The Fault In Our Stars (a girl fascinated with a Shakespearean story). JULY 28 -Lovi Poe
Lovi Poe has finally spoken up, albeit gingerly, on her breakup with Rocco Nacino, saying it’s borne of a mutual decision all for “the best.” “We had a very good two-year run, the relationship was filled with love and happiness. Very supportive kami sa isa’t-isa. All he (ever) did was push me and uplift me,” she began. Still, she added, “(But) we’re just too young for it to lead to something bigger.” Asked to elaborate on her statement, the actress said, “I have to be more of a woman, he has to be more of a man. Marami pa kaming dapat madiskubre para sa sarili namin.” Then again, reconciliation between Lovi and Rocco isn’t completely out of the question. “If it happens, it happens. If not, I guess it’s just not meant to be,” she said. Rocco, it seems, is having a hard time coming to terms with it all. “Kasi minahal ko siya talaga,” he said in a Tempo report. “But I am trying to move on.”  The “Encantadia” star is thankful for the memories he shared with Lovi. 10 things that I love about the AlDub flick

MANILA, AUGUST 1, 2016 (PHILSTAR) FUNFARE By Ricky Lo Updated July 28, 2016 - 12:00am - “I would like to fall in love again!” Like Susan Roces, that must be how the millions who have seen the AlDub movie Imagine You & Me nationwide felt — falling in love all over again. Susan was among those invited by Tony “Mr. T” Tuviera, the movie’s producer, to an exclusive block screening last Saturday at the Directors Club of SM Megamall.

Anyway, besides what Susan said about making her fall in love again, here are the 10 things that I love about Imagine You & Me:

It beautifully describes what a real feel-good movie is.

Maine Mendoza is a-OK even but she needs more “depth” and credibility in dramatic scenes.

Alden is consistent from beginning to end, such a cuddlesome boy with eyes that mirror a world of emotions, especially when they are welling up in a dramatic moment.

Jasmine Curtis-Smith is a revelation as an actress; she melts your heart with her losing battle with leukemia.

The cinematography by Shayne Sarte is mesmerizing, making you feel like flying to Como, Italy…but, sob and sigh, you simply can’t afford so you just soak yourself up in those, yes, delicious sceneries where Alden and Maine’s characters meet and match.

The soundtrack is touching, the musical background not intrusive at all, and the song Imagine You & Me (lyrics by Maine, music by Vic Sotto and arrangement by Jimmy Antiporda) aptly describes the split-screen-to-big-screen AlDub romance which the AlDub Nation hopes will leap from reel to real.

I agree with what Teddy Boy Locsin wrote that Imagine You & Me is sui generis (according to Webster: constituting a class alone, unique, peculiar) and, “a tough act to follow.”

Cai Cortez and Kakai Bautista as Maine’s roommates are a delight to watch, unwitting scene-stealers; and

Imagine You & Me brings back fond memories of 20 years ago when Giselle “G” Tongi and I were in Lake Como to cover the launch of Ricky Martin’s first English album at the villa of Giorgio Armani, with the event capped by fireworks that lit up the lake as we watched from the veranda of Armani’s villa.

PPD/King Rodriguez

MANILA, Philippines — Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said on Friday that the Philippine government will not give a "single centavo" to fund the Miss Universe pageant, set on Jan. 30, 2017.

READ: Philippines to host Miss Universe coronation night in 2017

"The Philippine government will not be giving a 'single centavo' [to Miss Universe] except of course in terms of services, in terms of protection, in terms of security, but not in actual cash," Abella said at a press conference streamed online.

The government was previously made to shoulder part of expenses of the Miss Universe pageant it hosted in 1994. But President Rodrigo Duterte already directed Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo not to allow Filipinos taxes to go to the pageant hosting next year.

"Basically, when it was first broached to the president, he said it's going to be magastos [noh]. His impression is it's going to be expensive...$11 million, that is his assumption," Abella said.

Earlier this month, reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach paid a courtesy call on President Rodrigo Duterte to discuss plans to host the international pageant in the Philippines. Teo has said that Duterte already "approved in principle" the proposal, but he also emphasized that expenses must be shouldered by private sector.

Abella said, meanwhile, that the president has already been assured by the private sector the expenses will be covered.

Meanwhile, it was not clear yet whether who among the private organizations will sponsor what is arguably the most pageant in the world.

Miss Universe is a global marketing event and Teo said it would be an opportunity to boost the tourism industry of the Philippines.

A state news report earlier on Friday revealed the government is looking at six destinations to be featured at the 65th Miss Universe pageant.

After getting the approval of President Duterte for the Philippines to host the pageant next year, the Department of Tourism has begun the negotiations with the organizers of Miss Universe.

Rocco, it seems, is having a hard time coming to terms with it all.

“Marami kaming naging travels na kaming dalawa lang and we learned from one another,” he said. “I wish her all the best parati.”

The actor cleared the rumors that money issues prompted the split.

“Natuwa lang ako when Lovi defended me. Kilala niya ako at alam niyang walang katotohanan iyon,” he said.

Happy Kapuso

Lovi has happily renewed her contract with GMA-7 recently.

“Inaalagaan naman kasi ako ng GMA. I’m just happy to be working with the same good-hearted people here in the network,” she said.

The actress looks forward to doing more projects with the network, noting, “Everytime na binibigyan nila ako ng proyekto parang mas nahahasa ’yung talent ko.”

“I’m still young and marami pa ’kong dapat matututunan. Nakakataba lang ng puso na they trust me with such good, challenging roles,” she added.

Lovi hopes to continue making her bosses and co-workers “happy.”

She said, “Ayokong biguin ’yung mga taong nagtitiwala sa’kin.”

Asked what kind of assignment she wants to tackle next, she intimated, “I really like action. Boyish kasi ako talaga eh, so I’m looking forward to doing something related to that, something that will push me to the limit.”

For now, Lovi is preparing for a new drama series billed “Someone To Watch Over Me.”

In the series, Lovi will play the wife of Tom Rodriguez’ character who has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Lovi said the show aims to raise awareness about the disease.

“Na hindi lang ito nangyayari sa mga taong may edad na kundi pati sa mga bata pa. Usually, iniisip natin nangyayari lang ito kapag nagkaka-edad na but no, these things happen to younger people,” she said.

Lovi has nothing but good words for Tom whom she first worked with in “Temptation Island.”

“He’s such an amazing actor. Magaling siya mag-adlib and he’s really awesome. I’m really excited to share scenes with him,” she said.

The actress is relaxed around Tom. “At nakakatulong ito ng malaki kasi mas nagiging natural ’yung execution namin sa eksena,” she said. “Like dito, mag-asawa kami so, kung pa’no umarte ang mag-asawa ganu’n na ganu’n ang pinapakita namin.”

Directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes, “Someone To Watch Over Me” will start airing in October.

Among other things, Lovi is also set to release an album and appear in a new film with Derek Ramsay and Christopher de Leon titled “The Escort.” (With report from Jojo P. Panaligan)

Sen. Grace Poe gives mom Susan Roces a loving hug during the dinner Wednesday night celebrating Grace and husband Neil Llamanzares’ 25th wedding anniversary and Susan’s birthday (yesterday, coinciding with The Philippine STAR’s 30th anniversary). Photos by JOHN TRONCO

No printed invitations were sent. The 400-plus invited simply texted “yes,” meaning they were attending, and they consisted mostly of the couple’s schoolmates way back when, showbiz friends, colleagues in politics, businessmen and the couple’s families and relatives.

It was a triple celebration Wednesday night, July 27, in Makati City for the 25th wedding anniversary of Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares and husband Neil Llamanzares, a tribute to Grace’s mom Susan Roces who was turning a year wiser yesterday (which also happened to be The Philippine STAR’s 30th anniversary).

“And also,” said Grace, “a thanksgiving to all those who have helped me during the campaign,” adding in good humor as she acknowledged the presence of Sen. Chiz Escudero (who was standing beside Neil at the back), “hindi totoong nagsuntukan sina Neil at Chiz,” prompting the guests to laugh and applaud.

Susan holding back tears with a smile during the birthday tribute to her

It was one night when showbiz and politics ceased being just strange but had become coosome bedfellows. As if to prove that there was really no gap between the so-called “AB” (high society) and “CD” (the common people), when Coco Martin arrived, most of the guests initially felt shy but soon gathered enough guts to have “selfie” and “groupie” with the Ang Probinsyano actor who very graciously obliged.

It was a night of music and nostalgia, with a band that filled the ballroom with old familiar tunes.

Neil leading his and Grace’s children Bryan, Hanna and Nika in dedicating a song to Grace

Grace sprang a surprise on Susan when she announced a tribute to her mom and her late dad, Da King FPJ. As throwback photos of showbiz’s Real Royal Couple were flashed on the giant monitor (stills of the then sweethearts from their hit movies, FPJ putting a ring into Susan’s finger as he said “I do!,” promising “to love and to hold, ‘till death do us part…,” etc.), Rico J. Puno, looking none the worse after surviving a heart attack that left him at the ICU for a while, sang The Way We Were. (Trivia: Every time the couple had an “LQ” [Lovers’ Quarrel], FPJ would invite Rico to their home in Greenhills and let him serenade Susan. It would melt Susan’s heart…instantly!).

Visibly touched, Susan whispered to us, “I don’t want to cry,” even if her voice cracked a little bit.

Also the Star of the Night Coco Martin with Grace, Susan and Bryan

Hosted by Quezon City Councilor Roderick Paulate and Gladys Reyes (an MTRCB member when Grace was head of the agency and up to now), the program also featured Jonalyn Viray as opening, with Martin Nievera as the finale performer with three songs, including the very moving Through The Years. (All performers were gratis et amore.)

While enjoying the dinner catered by Hizon’s (Linguini Nest Aglio Olio, Roasted Salmon with Tarragon Buerre Blanc and Lemon Slices; Mixed Tempura with Beef Teppanyaki and Vegetable Stir Fry; and Paella Valenciana, among the items on the menu), the guests exchanged stories about the carefree years when love was young and life was nice and easy sans traffic woes.

Rico J. Puno singing his signature song The Way We Were, much to the delight of the guests.

Grace and Neil’s children — Bryan, 24; Hanna, 18; and Nika, 11 — then dedicated a song to Grace with Neil himself accompanying them, and Hanna on guitar.

All in all, it was a little night of music, easy camaraderie, full of fun and laughter and, yes, full of Grace.

Kanye West leaves Ellen DeGeneres speechless: 'I'm sorry for the realness'

By Christie D'Zurilla Kanye West Ellen DeGeneres

"Well, it's not daytime television anymore," Ellen DeGeneres said Thursday on her show after a rambling, nearly unbroken, nearly 6½-minute oration by her guest, Kanye West.

"We're gonna take a break," she added, looking for the right words after she'd managed to sneak in only a few dozen of them during West's lengthy monologue.

After working to pry more than a few words out of the rapper as she quizzed him about his kids and whether he regretted anything he'd ever tweeted, the host brought up his appeal to Mark Zuckerberg for $1 billion in funding, which West acknowledged might have been more successful had he approached the Facebook founder on, well, Facebook, instead of Twitter.

"Give me one example, the ideas," DeGeneres said, "because maybe someone watching will give you the money."

And Kanye was off to the races.

We're in a Renaissance period where people have multiple talents, he said, name-checking "12 Years a Slave" director Steve McQueen. He brought up his parents and their credentials, saying he was raised to make a difference. He quoted Rakim and said he was raised on Phife Dawg and hip-hop.

"Are you connecting?," the shoe designer asked after dismissing those who measure contributions to society by tracking sales and radio play. "Picasso is dead. Steve Jobs is dead. Walt Disney is dead. Name somebody living that you can name in the same breath as them.

"Don't tell me about being likeable. We've got a hundred years here. We're one race, the human race, one civilization. We're a blip in the existence of the universe, and we're constantly trying to pull each other down. Not doing things to help each other. That's my point. It's like I'm shaking talking about it. I know it's daytime TV, but I feel that I can make a difference while I'm here. I feel that I can make things better through my skill set. I'm an artist, and I feel that I can make things better through my skill set. I'm a artist. Five years old, art school. PhD, Art Institute of Chicago."

He has a condition where he sees sound, he said. "Everything that I sonically make is a painting. I see it. I see the importance — I see the importance and the value of everyone being able to experience a more beautiful life."

West dropped more names, mentioning a dinner with President Obama and Leonardo DiCaprio, the latter of whose conservation efforts were apparently taken more seriously than West's work in the world of fashion design.

"But," Mr. Kim Kardashian said, "I remember going to school, like, in fifth grade, and wanting to have a cool outfit ....

"I called the head of Payless [ShoeSource]. I'm like, 'I want to work with you. I want to take all this information that I've learned from sitting at all these fashion shows and knocking on all these doors and buying all these expensive clothes and I want to take away bullying.' "

It's like I'm shaking, talking about it. I know it's daytime TV,
but I feel that I can make a difference while I'm here.
— Kanye West

At this point, someone in the control booth apparently remembered to hit the "applause" button, because the audience had basically been taking it all in silently for a while.

"There was a time Michael Jackson couldn't get his video on MTV because he was considered to be 'urban.' The Michael Jackson," West said. "So I literally have to be the Michael Jackson of apparel in order to break down the doors for everyone who will come after I'm gone, after I'm dead. After they call me Wacko Kanye. Isn't that so funny, that people point fingers at the people who have influenced us the most?"

At this point, DeGeneres was — as she had been for an eternity in talk-show time — sitting motionless except for blinking and occasionally wetting her lips as if to speak. But there had been no room to speak.

"I'm sorry, daytime television," West said to the audience. "I'm sorry for the realness."

Cue applause. Time to go to commercial.
