Jaclyn Jose said that her Cannes win as Best Actress for her portrayal of a drug-dealing mother in Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’Rosa has just started to sink in.
The veteran actress arrived from the France-based filmfest Tuesday evening and went straight from the airport to a presscon at GMA Network (of which she is under contract), proudly carrying her Chopard trophy which she even described as her “new boyfriend.” In the film, Jaclyn portrays a mother of four in a slum area, who is forced to sell drugs to fend for her family. She gets arrested and ends up embroiled in a “web of police corruption.” When made to recall the awards night last Sunday by the media, Jaclyn said, “No words could describe what I was feeling at that moment. The feeling was really overwhelming.”  She didn’t have any inkling or gut feeling that the night would give her three-decade, multi-awarded acting career its highest honor yet. “Ang alam ko wala kaming panalo. MANILA, MAY 30, 2016 (ABS-CBN) Updated as of May 23 2016 10:47 AM - Filipina Jaclyn Jose won the best actress award at this year's Cannes film festival for her role in Brillante Mendoza's film, "Ma' Rosa."

The film tells the story of a poor Manila neighborhood stall holder who sells drugs on the side with her husband to make ends meet.
The couple gets arrested, leaving their four children to try and buy their parents' freedom from corrupt policemen.

Aside from Jose, here are the other winners from the 2016 Cannes film festival, as chosen by a jury led by Australian director and "Mad Max" creator George Miller:

Palme d'Or: "I, Daniel Blake"
British Director Ken Loach won over the jury with his moving tale of a carpenter (Dave Johns) who suffers repeated humiliations as he seeks welfare benefits after having a heart attack.

Grand Prix: "It's Only The End of The World"
Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan's film was booed by some critics but the jury felt it deserved second place in Cannes for his fraught family drama. It is the latest in a string of Cannes honors for the 27-year-old director who won the third-placed Jury Prize in 2014 for "Mommy".

Jury Prize: "American Honey"
Britain's Andrea Arnold came in third with "American Honey", starring Shia LaBeouf as the leader of a group of disaffected US teens selling magazines door-to-door.
A throbbing soundtrack accompanies the youths on their slow-paced road trip, with plenty of marijuana smoking, drinking and falling in love.

Best actor: Shahab Hosseini in "The Salesman"
The Iranian actor won for his role as a man struggling to come to terms with an attack on his wife in their home.
He sets out on a revenge mission while she tries to regain the upper hand and deal with the assault in her own manner.

Best director: Cristian Mungiu and Olivier Assayas
The best director award was shared between Romania's Cristian Mungiu and France's Olivier Assayas.
Mungiu shines a light on the post-communist social rot in his homeland in "Graduation", about a father trying to ensure his daughter can escape Romania's corruption with a scholarship to a British university.
Assayas won for "Personal Shopper" starring Kristen Stewart, a movie that is an audacious mix of ghost story, murder mystery and existential drama. Critics, however, booed it.

Best screenplay: Asghar Farhadi
The Iranian director, who won an Oscar in 2012 for "A Separation", won best screenplay for "The Salesman". – With reports from Rose Eclarinal, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, and Agence France Presse

MANILA, Philippines – Jaclyn Jose said that her Cannes win as Best Actress for her portrayal of a drug-dealing mother in Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’Rosa has just started to sink in.

The veteran actress arrived from the France-based filmfest Tuesday evening and went straight from the airport to a presscon at GMA Network (of which she is under contract), proudly carrying her Chopard trophy which she even described as her “new boyfriend.”

In the film, Jaclyn portrays a mother of four in a slum area, who is forced to sell drugs to fend for her family. She gets arrested and ends up embroiled in a “web of police corruption.”

When made to recall the awards night last Sunday by the media, Jaclyn said, “No words could describe what I was feeling at that moment. The feeling was really overwhelming.”

She didn’t have any inkling or gut feeling that the night would give her three-decade, multi-awarded acting career its highest honor yet. “Ang alam ko wala kaming panalo. We thought we were going home early. We never expected it,” she said.

What made her victory even sweeter was the presence of daughter Andi Eigenmann, who also plays her daughter in Ma’Rosa.

When her name was proclaimed as Best Actress winner, Jaclyn brought the equally teary-eyed Andi and direk Brillante with her to the centerstage.

Jury members like American actress Kirsten Dunst got caught on camera turning emotional over her win.

“They said they never thought that an actor from my country would be spontaneous as well. Sabi ni Kirsten sa elevator — yeah, rubbing elbows kami hahaha — she was touched because she thought it was a beautiful speech, and that grabbing my daughter’s hand and not letting go of her, dun daw (nanggaling) yung emotion nila.”

“To have your daughter beside you while winning such a prestigious honor as this is such a wonderful feeling,” Jaclyn added, “siguro yun yung (mas) overwhelming para sa akin.”

In the film, the actress plays a mother-turned-small-time drug dealer to fend for her family

While it was her first nomination, it was Jaclyn’s second time to grace one of the world’s oldest and best-known filmfests. She first attended it in 2008 for Brillante’s Serbis, the movie before the filmmaker won Cannes Best Director for Kinatay in 2009.

Jaclyn shares a long friendship and working relationship with Brillante that dates back to her 1987 film Takaw Tukso. But it was really for Andi that Jaclyn went to Cannes this year.

“Andi told me, ‘Ma, tanggapin mo na para naman makapag-abroad ako, ma-experience ko naman ang mga na-experience mo. So I said, ‘Okay, I will do this for you’ … because I had no idea I would win and I already experienced the red carpet walk before, so it was basically all for her. It’s such a fulfillment for me winning (the award) and (bringing) Andi to the international scene,” she said, adding that Andi snagged two pictorials while at Cannes, aside from landing on Vanity Fair's Best Dressed list.

Meanwhile, Jaclyn is aware that some international film critics had called her triumph — over heavy favorites like Marion Cotillard in From The Land of the Moon, Isabelle Huppert in Elle and Kristen Stewart in Personal Shopper — as a surprise and a shock.

She, however, got to witness how the jury members defended their decision as she was waiting in a holding area for her turn to meet the foreign press.

Actor Donald Sutherland was quoted in reports as saying that “the critics were wrong” and “it’s a big-time leading role.” Writer/director Arnaud Desplechin also said, “She’s the film. That scene at the end where she’s eating! Her performance broke my heart.”

Jaclyn will be next seen in the GMA 7 sexy-comedy A1 Ko Sa’Yo premiering on June 2

Jaclyn also thinks that it was the scene that earned her the prize. “Tingin ko rin. Pinaghirapan ko yun ha!” said Jaclyn, adding that she was just following the “no-acting” directive of Brillante. “When I saw it, I said, okay. I knew in my heart that I did one good scene ... that I did something that would somehow touch their hearts, and it was the ending.”

Her hope now is for her award plus Ma’Rosa’s successful reception in Cannes (including a seven-minute standing ovation at the premiere) to inspire Filipino moviegoers to watch the film when it finally premieres in the country. There are also plans to enter it at the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) in December.

Ma’Rosa has also been described in media reports as timely given incoming President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign promises to suppress if not wipe out the country’s drug menace.

Meantime, Jaclyn will be next seen topbilling the GMA 7 sexy-comedy A1 Ko Sa’Yo, along with Gardo Versoza, Benjamin Alves, Solenn Heussaff, Sef Cadayona, Roi Vinzon, among others. She plays a frustrated beauty queen-turned-flamboyant talent manager in the series that is directed by Randy Santiago and airs Thursday nights beginning June 2.

Entertainment TV head Lilybeth Rasonable said that they were inspired by all the characters Jaclyn has played on GMA 7 that “when we cast her for this, we couldn’t think of anyone else but her.”

Duterte son is social media rock star By Janvic Mateo (The Philippine Star) | Updated May 19, 2016 - 12:00am 0 2 googleplus0 0

Undated photos posted on Sebastian Duterte’s Facebook page show him engaging in his favorite sport, surfing. In previous reports, he said he spends most of his time in the sea.

MANILA, Philippines – The youngest son of incoming president Rodrigo Duterte has shied away from politics, unlike his elder siblings.

But when his father decided to run for president, Sebastian “Baste” Duterte suddenly found himself in the limelight as thousands of supporters gushed over his rugged good looks in different social media platforms.

An entrepreneur by profession, the 28-year-old political science graduate from Ateneo de Davao University had actively campaigned for his father, often performing with a band for supporters who had gathered to show support for the elder Duterte.

On social media, Baste’s popularity matches that of his father, with his posts often getting thousands of interactions.

His Facebook account has reached the 5,000 friend limit, and is now being followed by over 200,000 netizens.

A 21-second clip that showed him sending “virtual kisses” to fans has recently become viral and has been viewed over a million times.

A supporter who uploaded the clip, Aika Ynayan, said she never expected the video to receive a lot of attention.

She said the video was a trimmed version of the Facebook live video released by Baste’s friend and congressional candidate for Manila, Joblack Nkemakolam.

“I tried to download it and trimmed some parts of the video, especially the funny and the kilig parts. It was all just for plain fun in my timeline,” she said in a post, extending her gratitude to Nkemakolam.

“To Mr. Sebastian Duterte, I’m gonna say sorry if ever you didn’t like what I did. But a lot of people enjoyed the video and literally were going gaga over it,” she added.

Strawberry man

Sebastian 'Baste' Duterte

During the campaign period, Duterte’s strategist Peter Laviña posted an image of Baste with a strawberry vendor and called him “Strawberry Man,” a reference to the popular “Carrot Man” whose photos also went viral online due to his good looks.

Laviña referred to the younger Duterte as the “secret weapon” of the campaign team.

Other posts about him have also since gone viral, including videos of his various performances as a vocalist in a band.

A father of two, Baste appeared to be unaffected by his popularity, often responding to those who respond to his posts on Facebook.

During the heat of the campaign period, when Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV bared the alleged properties of the Dutertes, Baste brushed aside reports that he owns a townhouse in San Juan.

“Grabe ang yaman namin, may townhouse ako. Tayo na sa Jollibee! Libre ko kayo,” he said in one post. “Show me the love, people! More likes!”

The camp of Duterte said the money used to buy the townhouse came from his first wife and Baste’s mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman.

The marriage of Duterte and Zimmerman has been annulled.

Baste reportedly stayed in the townhouse when he was studying in San Beda high school.

Influential religious leader Apollo Quiboloy (photo) said he had dreamed that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will become president as far back as 17 years ago.

Quiboloy, the leader of the religious sect Kingdom of Jesus Christ, said that in his dream, Duterte asked him to Manila to play golf with him.

“He fetched me from Davao City and took me by plane to Manila to invite me to play golf with him,” Quiboloy narrated. “I was ushered to [the] Malacanang grounds to play golf. In my dream, the mayor was the president.”

The religious leader said he wants Duterte to become president because he has seen how the mayor transformed Davao City. He said he is now prodding Duterte to run for the highest office in the land.

At Quiboloy’s recent birthday celebration, Duterte again played coy about his political plans and said that his presidential bid is something that only God can decide.

Duterte on Quiboloy: ‘Friendship ends if…’ BY DUTERTENEWS ON MAY 22, 2016 IN DIGONG FLASH

Kingdom of Jesus Christ founder, Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy was reportedly hurt when President-elect Rody Duterte didn’t consult his long time friend on choosing Duterte’s cabinet members.

According to the pastor’s spokesman, Mike Abe, Quiboloy got hurt when Duterte camp was accordingly ignored all his calls for Digong.

On a radio program, Abe said that it was the pastor who ordered him to air his feeling that the latter doesn’t like the people surrounding Duterte.

According to Abe, Duterte and Quiboloy are good friends for 30 years now. He reiterated that it is the pastor who helped him mobilize during the campaign period.

” Nanalo si President Duterte dahil sa panginoon. Nanalo din sya dahil sa appointed son of God, Pastor Quiboloy, kaya ganun nalang ang tampo ni pastor bakit hindi sya kinunsulta sa pagpili ng mga cabinet members” Abe said.

President Duterte was asked about his reaction on Quiboloy getting hurt for ignoring him. He said ‘ I decide alone. I don’t need any friends to influence me to choose. Ako lahat nag iisip nyan’.

“Our friendship ends when my loyalty to the people begins” Duterte added.

During the campaign period, Quiboloy was quoted saying ‘ I’m not expecting in return in politics. I’m just here to help. I am his spiritual adviser’.

Duterte spokesperson Peter Laviña has apologized on TV stating that like other Duterte’s close friends example the MNLF leaders who weren’t able to speak with Duterte also during his first public appearance, this is because Duterte has been busy seeing cabinet hopefuls 21 hours a day. Laviña said that the President cannot accommodate everyone at a time.

UPDATE: The religious leader Quiboloy called a press conference on Monday, May 23, saying that he will not be a hindrance of the Duterte presidency and he would support the President.

He also mentioned that the issue was just a small thing to focus on (referring to his spokesman Mike Abe who appeared on TV and spoke on radio programs about the alleged ‘tampo’ of the pastor)
