MAY 7 -Stressing a point during last Wednesday’s press conference prior to the roundtable with The STAR reporters, columnists and editors
(The Philippine STAR has been conducting interviews with the five presidential candidates. To see how fit for office they are, each of them is invited to do a “Body Talk.” Four down: Vice Pres. Jojo Binay, former DILG Sec. Mar Roxas, Sen. Grace Poe and Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago. Last but not the least is Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. No need for further introduction. Let’s go straight to the “executive check-up.”) When Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte came to The STAR office last Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by his partner Honeylet Avanceña and their daughter Veronica (nicknamed Kitty), all he had for a very late lunch was a cup of white rice, fried fish and monggo, with fried sliced banana (saba) for dessert. It was Honeylet (a nurse) herself who served his plateful which he downed with iced tea. As soon as Digong arrived, he was welcomed by a far more electrifying hysteria than the one generated by the visit of Maine “Yaya Dub” Mendoza a few months ago. He was mobbed by fans waiting for him outside the STAR office in Port Area, Manila, and those at the lobby composed of STAR editors, columnists, reporters and employees, together with media guys from other companies who attended the general presscon prior to the exclusive roundtable with The STAR guys. We finally experienced the “Duterte charisma” that draws record crowds anywhere he goes. AlDub multiplied by five, we daresay. He was game and playful during the “Body Talk,” answering all the questions no-holds-barred, much to the delight of the Entertainment Staff. (We quote verbatim some of his Tagalog answers to retain the unique “Duterte flavor.”) On your way to The STAR office, you must have seen the street families sleeping on the sidewalks. How did you feel about them?
“They are a familiar sight to me; they are everywhere. The sheer number is very high in cities, in highly-urbanized places.” What have you lost during the campaign? “My privacy. Sa totoo lang, I’m a very private person. As a matter of fact, before this campaign, I could walk to any place and nobody would recognize me, nobody knew me…except, of course, in Davao. But when my face was made public, noong naging mura na ang mukha ko, I could no longer hide my persona. So I would answer you by saying that my first regret is losing my privacy.” And what have you gained during the campaign? READ MORE...

Who among us did not grow up as a teenager, blushing when Joseph Estrada smiled his sexy grin, or hear our hearts pitter patter when we looked into Fernando Poe Jr.’s deep, soulful eyes?
The “macho” image of yesterday was still an offshoot of the hunter-gatherer male, who hunted wild game to provide sustenance and defended his family from invading tribes. Hence, the movie industry portrayed the male hero as the gun-toting, cigarette-smoking, “me against the world” persona. It was exciting and romantic for women. It was confidence-building for men. But a lot has changed since then and most Filipino women today find themselves working full-time jobs or spending much of their day as busy entrepreneurs, in addition to raising their kids. In tandem with this, many progressive men have learned to accept the bread-winning partnership that is the reality of the modern marriage. So where does this leave the “macho” male ego? I believe the modern male has redefined himself much more broadly than just the guy who puts food on the table or defends his home turf. He has found great fulfillment in assuming the important role of NURTURER; in some cases, he is the sole provider of loving and caring for his children. When a man wakes up at night to comfort his crying baby, his wife sees SELF-SACRIFICE. When a man makes breakfast in bed for a wife who worked all night, his wife recognizes GENEROSITY. When a man changes his baby’s very soiled diaper, his wife witnesses COURAGE. Because at no time has marriage been a more challenging feat of TEAMWORK. Reflections of a modern Filipina mother: Why Duterte’s appeal reflects an outdated view of ‘macho’ By Violeta Gallego (philstar.com) | Updated May 6, 2016 - 8:01pm 0 0 googleplus0 0

The “macho” image of yesterday was still an offshoot of the hunter-gatherer male." CC

It is no surprise then that in a workplace that has more women than ever before, the traits that make a man successful are those that allow him to be a consensus builder, a “win-win” negotiator and a strong team player.

As it is at home and in the workplace, so it is in the global economy. The most successful leaders are those that understand they are part of the family of planet Earth. Conflicts are not solved through violence but through DIPLOMACY, and diplomacy is much more difficult.

True “macho-ness” then is not measured by how big your gun is, or how tough you talk, but by how well you TAKE CARE OF YOUR PEOPLE, including the lowliest of them.

Oprah and Ellen as friends and neighbors By: Nestor U. Torre @inquirerdotnet Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:07 AM May 6th, 2016

DEGENERES

AS TALK-MAGAZINE program hosts, Oprah Winfrey and Ellen Degeneres delight millions of viewers with their respective shows and specials.
We have learned a lot from viewing their programs through the years and had a great time in the process.

So, when we heard that Oprah was guesting in a special telecast of Ellen’s daily show, we made sure to catch the unusual interaction between the two TV icons some days ago.

It turned out that Oprah was guesting on Ellen’s show to plug some of her special productions on her OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) channel, especially the imminent start of her limited docu series, “Belief,” which seeks to shed insightful and comprehensive light on mankind’s prime faith systems through the centuries.

That certainly sounds like a should-see series, so we hope that a regional content provider here will pick it up for local airing.

In addition, we learned from Oprah and Ellen’s conversation that they’re not just friends but also neighbors, with Ellen sharing that she sometimes walks over Oprah’s mansion to “borrow a cup of money!”

For her part, Oprah further shared that she was proud of other shows on her “O” TV network, like “Oprah’s Master Class,” “Oprah’s Lifeclass,” “Super Soul Sunday” and “Oprah: Where Are They Now?”

Oprah may no longer have a daily talk show, but as the head of a multimedia conglomerate, she’s become even more influential on the global scene.

Continuing to banter with her guest and mentor, Ellen “chided” Oprah for not letting her know that she recently bought a 10-percent stake in the Weight Watchers corporation, the prime products and services of which she now endorses.

The day the public learned that Oprah had bought into Weight Watchers, the company’s stock value was boosted in a major way—and the TV icon ended up earning $45 million in only 24 hours!

WINFREY

No wonder, Ellen wanted to get in on the profitable action! But Oprah patiently explained that she couldn’t let anybody know anything in advance, because it would constitute stock price manipulation, which was illegal, and could get Ellen behind bars—like what happened some years ago to an even more senior TV host-producer, Martha Stewart.

Viewers were also delighted to learn that Oprah loves gardening and sometimes sends freshly harvested vegetables for Ellen to savor.

Tit for tat, Ellen once gifted Oprah with an apple seedling and the latter happily informed her that it had grown into a fruit-bearing tree and she would send her neighbor part of its first harvest, forthwith!

What a treat it was to see the two TV icons enjoying each other’s company, as if there were no cameras around to intrude into their “across the backyard fence” chatter and gossip.

Oprah on “Ellen” was our best viewing experience last month—so, we can hardly wait for their next “neighborly” interaction!
