THEM WERE THOSE 'LOVELY' DAYS

Nora Aunor & Tirso Cruz III Back when we were 40-plus years younger, highly impressionable and given to swooning, many of us, so to speak, wet behind the ears, there was Guy & Pip, there was Vi & Bot, there were several other love teams that colored the imagination of teenagers and made their world go ‘round. Those were gullible days and them (the showbiz idols and their avid worshippers) were the days, my friend, that (to borrow a line from the popular song) “we thought would never end…”  In spirit, them never really ended. Guy is now Lola Nora (Aunor) and so would be her ’70s contemporaries Vilma Santos (forever your Ate Vi), Edgar (Bobot) Mortiz and Tirso “Pip” Cruz III (whose nickname was taken by his father from a character in the movie Great Expectations). They were given nicknames, unlike today’s love teams who are known by uni-names (KathNiel, LizQuen, JaDine, et al). As a nod to this Love Month, let’s take a misty-eyed look at Guy & Pip, Vi & Bot and other such pairings of the “sensational” ‘70s (that adjective being a derivative of the title of Ate Vi’s then Sunday show D’Sensations, remember?) and their movies best described as, “potboilers” (if you know what it means), compiled by Funfare’s “other beauty expert” Celso de Guzman Caparas. 1. Nora Aunor & Tirso Cruz III: 9 Teeners, YeYe Generation, Young Girl, Banda 24, Oh Delilah, Karate Showdown, Drakulita, D’ Musical Teenage Idols!, Fiesta Extravaganza, Teenage Escapades! and Halina, Neneng Ko, all in 1969;?Young Love, Orang, The Young at Heart, Nasaan Ka, Inay? and I Dream of Nora (1970); Always in My Heart, Guy and Pip, and My Blue Hawaii (1971);?A Gift of Love, Kung May Gusot May Lusot, Nora, Mahal Kita, Winter Holiday, And God Smiled at Me and My Little Brown Girl (1972);?Maalaala Mo Kaya? and Hindi Kita Malimot (1973);?Memories of Our Love (1975); Magandang Gabi Sa Inyong Lahat (1976); Pinakasalan Ko Ang Ina ng Aking Kapatid (1977); and Mahal Mo, Mahal Ko and Dash A Lotsa Nonsents! Quotable quotes from my third ‘baby’ FUNFARE By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star) | Updated February 12, 2016 - 12:00am 0 0 googleplus0 0

How does it feel to have a book?

A woman saw me holding a copy of Conversations Pa More. I said, “It feels like having a baby.”

Remember what they say about being “immortal”? Three things: Plant a tree, write a book and have a baby. I accomplished only one of them.

It’s my third book, after Star-Studded (1995) and Conversations with Ricky Lo (2001).

Published by Viva Publishing and out in March (check it out at a National Bookstore near you), Conversations Pa More features “Dynamic Duos,” including (at random order) Pres. Noynoy Aquino & First Sister Kris Aquino, Mother Lily & Father Remy Monteverde, Dingdong Dantes & Marian Rivera, Willie Revillame & Liz Almoro, Mar Roxas & Korina Sanchez, Senators Manny Villar & Cynthia Villar, Sen. Chiz Escudero & Heart Evangelista, Sen. Tito Sotto & Helen Gamboa, Vic Sotto & Pauleen Luna, Alden Richards & Maine Mendoza, Jericho Rosales & Kim Jones, Piolo Pascual & Sam Milby, Martin Nievera & Gary Valenciano, Sen. Grace Poe & Lovi Poe, The Gutierrezes, Marc Pingris & Danica Sotto, Karylle & Yael Yuzon, Edu Manzano & Luis Manzano, Sen. Bong Revilla & Rep. Jinggoy Estrada & Precy Vitug, Dr. Vicki Belo & Dr. Hayden Kho, Robin Padilla & Mariel Rodriguez, Benjie Paras & family, and James Yap & Michela Cazzola.

Here are quotable quotes from some of the “Dynamic Duos” in my third “baby:”

READ MORE...

Kris is noted for thinking and working things fast. Can you keep up with her?

Noynoy: Oh yes. But I take a little time when it comes to making decisions.

Oh, you are less impulsive than Kris.

Kris: Yeah. He is.

Noynoy: I was ambushed in 1987. I lost some of my security men. Dapat hindi ako impulsive. You have to get more details before you rush into a decision.

Kris: You know why he was out at that time? (Noynoy reacts as if caught by surprise)

Why ba?

Kris (Laughing): No more na. That’s past na. Hahahaha!

* * *

How many children do you plan to have?

Kim: Many! (She has only two siblings.)

Echo: As many as my siblings. I have around 10, including half-siblings from both my mother’s side and my father’s side.

* * *

Did Edu ever spank you when you were a kid?

Luis: Never!

Edu (Deadpan): Noong inihulog kita sa building, that was an accident, remember?

Luis (Poker-faced): Now you know why I’m like this.

* * *

Is it really true that you courted Father Remy instead of the other way around?

Mother Lily: Yes, it’s true. Ako talaga ang lumigaw sa kanya. Father was a basketball player, very handsome. He was tall; at that time, 5’8” was considered tall. He was playing for San Beda at that time and at the same time for the team of my father, Domingo Yu Chu who was from Marinduque. I would watch him practice every night. He was the No. 1 player.

* * *

How did the courtship start?

Cynthia: We started as friends. As young people would say, mag-MU kami. Mutual Understanding.

Paano nanligaw si Manny?

Cynthia: Mabait ‘yan. My parents liked him because bukod sa mabait, he’s hardworking. We were living in Las Pińas and he was living in Tondo and yet he would visit me at home. At that time, ang layo n’un, para kang pumunta sa probinsya.

Manny: So I was happy when we were in UP because we would see each other every day. At that time, before I started visiting her at home after graduation, I didn’t have an idea where Las Pińas was.

Cynthia: We were in the south and he was in the north. At that time, Las Pińas was small time, very simple, wala pang mga malls.

* * *

If and when, how many kids do you want to have?

Michela: One is enough.

You should have six, to form a basketball team.

Michela (Joking): Oh, you mean four more? James has two already, right?

* * *

Any advice from Bossing Vic?

Danica: Before Marc and I got married, Daddy gave us his first and so far, only advice. Sabi niya, “Kung magpapakasal kayo, tapos hindi n’yo rin seseryosohin, huwag na lang.” My dad is a man of few words pero kapag nagbitiw ng salita, malalim and he really means it.

* * *

Helen on husband Sen. Tito as they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary: He comes home on time…in the last 45 years, he hasn’t given me any problem…and (is Tito faithful?) of course, he is. Oo naman!

* * *

You were romantically linked to former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos. Is it okay for you to talk about it?

Carmen: Oh, sure! No, it was not true, and neither was the rumor that (former First Lady) Imelda Marcos was sore at me. No, there was never any animosity between us. No, it’s not true that she threw acid at my face. The rumor got so bad that when I was in the States, I was interviewed by UPI (United Press International) about it. In fairness to Imelda, it never happened.

* * *

How many times have you fallen flat on your face (in the name of love)?

Pilita: I would say…twice? But I am the type who springs back fast and easily. I try to get up the next day no matter how much it hurts. I think that’s what singing does to me. It helps me bring out all my emotions — the hurt and the anger. Singing eases the pain considerably, because you bring it out in the lyrics, in the words, in the melody.

* * *

There is a perception na under mo si Mar. Please react.

Korina: Hahahaha! That is such a joke! Si Mar, ang tigas ng ulo niyan. He thinks, analyzes then decides. Then full speed ahead. Maingat at kalmado siya. Pero pag nag-desisyon, that’s it. Lahat nang nakakakilala kay Mar alam na alam na hindi siya nadidiktahan.

* * *

What kind of father was Da King?

Grace: He was malambing. Inaalagaan ka niya talaga. I guess Lovi also speaks well about him and all the things that he had done for her. Sayang she didn’t have more time with him…because of the circumstances, you know.

Lovi: As I said, my memories about Papa are blurred. I was six years old when I was in San Francisco, about 15 or 16 when Papa died. Pabalik-balik ako between San Francisco and the Philippines.

Grace: I’m sure niyakap-yakap siya ni Papa pero hindi lang niya naintindihan because she was very young then. Papa was fond of kids.
