AULD LANG SYNE THE SONG FOR THE NEW YEAR

DECEMBER 30 -Just like Auld Lang Syne says, we are hopeful that we will have cups of kindness to share with friends and loved ones who have been part of our journey. —Illustration by Phoebe Marquez Barry Manilow is right. As he says in the hit song he co-wrote with Marty Panzer back in the ’70s, It’s Just Another New Year’s Eve. It is a day just like any other day. I often imagine those words said with a sad face and a shoulder shrug. Nothing to the New Year really.
But we can make it otherwise. A New Year can be good, different and memorable. Most of all, we can wish all the days to follow to be happy and fruitful. A day is only how you make it and we have been making New Year’s Day a time for endings and hopefully beautiful beginnings since mankind learned how to use a calendar. The song that traditionally accompanies these rites is Auld Lang Syne. It is believed to mean, ”old long time” or something similar. This was originally a Scottish folk poem that was handed down orally across generations. It took the much-admired 18th century poet and lyricist Robert Burns to put it down on paper. He is believed to have added a stanza or two and then set the lyrics into a melody of a traditional folk song way back in the 1780s. Burns was the leading figure in the Romantic Movement. He was named the greatest Scotsman who ever lived in a recent poll. He also wrote other famous verses like My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose and A Man’s A Man For A That. But he is now better known as the writer of Auld Lang Syne. As Scots, English and other peoples from the British Isles migrated to other parts of the world they also brought their customs with them. Those included the tradition of ending the old year with the sound of Auld Lang Syne. Auld Lang Syne is about parting and is often sung to the accompaniment of bagpipes and drums. It is now also played during culminating occasions like graduations or the end of any undertaking where the participants despite promises to the contrary, know they will never see each other again. It is a sad song that often brings listeners to tears and can also be heard during funerals. READ MORE...

Same thing this year except that Albert didn’t stay long and went right home after dinner that followed the midnight Mass. “Usually,” added Albert, “from the Cojuangcos we would drop by the homes of my family (the Martinezes) and then Liezl’s family (the Muhlachs) and go home early in the morning. Not this time because I missed Liezl terribly. The feeling was not the same.” Neither was Albert in the mood to buy gifts for his children. “I just gave them cash so they buy whatever they wanted.” Liezl’s absence was felt even more intensely when Albert heard Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas on the radio, Liezl’s favorite Christmas song. “That song made me cry,” admitted Albert, “especially the line…through the years we all will be together, if the fates allow…That line is so touching, di ba? We really don’t have control over what the fates have in store for us. That reminded me not just of Liezl but also my mom (who also succumbed to cancer). How sad! But we did feel Liezl’s presence. Auld Lang Syne the song for the New Year

MANILA, JANUARY 4, 2016 (PHILSTAR) SOUNDS FAMILIAR By Baby A. Gil December 30, 2015 - Just like Auld Lang Syne says, we are hopeful that we will have cups of kindness to share with friends and loved ones who have been part of our journey. —Illustration by Phoebe Marquez Barry Manilow is right. Here is how it goes. Note that this is not Burns’ original set of lyrics. That one is in Scottish brogue. Thank heaven that somebody somewhere during these past 300 years thoughtfully provided the song’s lyrics with a translation that most English speaking people can understand.

ROBERT BURNS 'AULD LANG SYNE'

“Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot and old lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we’ll take a cup of kindness yet for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup, and surely I’ll buy mine, and we’ll take a cup of kindness yet for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the slopes and picked the daisies fine, but we’ve wandered many a weary foot since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream from morning sun till dine, but seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend, and give me a hand o’ thine, and we’ll take a right good will draught for auld lang syne.”

Another year has ended. Once again we have been given the opportunity for renewal. We pray to become better human beings worthy of the privilege to be part of this New Year. We are now looking forward to a safe, enjoyable, productive and exciting 2016.

But just like Auld Lang Syne says, we are hopeful that we will have cups of kindness to share with friends and loved ones who have been part of our journey.

Happy New Year. May yours be a happy, blessed one.

Love & horror in two MMFF entries By Pablo A. Tariman (The Philippine Star) | Updated December 29, 2015 - 12:00am 2 5 googleplus0 0

Jennylyn Mercado and Jericho Rosales in #Walang Forever: A new love team is born

MANILA, Philippines – Quantum Films has two substantial entries in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) and both are worth patronizing.

One is a romantic comedy #Walang Forever top-billing actors Jennylyn Mercado and Jericho Rosales and the other is a horror movie, Buy Now, Die Later featuring Vhong Navarro, Alex Gonzaga, Rayver Cruz and TJ Trinidad, among others.

Two easily recognizable qualities of the film are the good writing by Paul Sta. Ana and the deft, if, spontaneous direction by Dan Villegas.

Here we get to see some scenes in the love life of celebrated writer of romantic comedy films Mia (played by Jennylyn) and her once and future love, Ethan (Jericho). The film opens with the writer preparing to appear in a TV talk show to which she doesn’t know what to expect.

What she did not expect was that the interviewer would dwell on past loves and what she hoped to accomplish in the future.

As she recalls her past, a complicated love life unfolds. She thought she was through with one chapter of her first taste of love until she realized she wanted to be with her man whatever his status was at the moment.

Happily, the team up of Jennylyn and Jericho has a special brew to it that keeps moviegoers in varied state of romantic trance.

Jericho remains a leading lady’s dream partner and lives his part with a good blend of romantic substance.

But it is Jennylyn who remains a very engaging performer. She is a natural in whatever state her character finds herself and the good part is that she lives and breathes the character with a high degree of credibility. On top of that, she remains as fresh as springtime adding a few more “kilig” factor to her role.

Direk Dan allowed the story to flow freely and never for once tried anything for effects. He is perfectly in control but doesn’t show it. To him, the story is the thing. And it is just as well because #Walang Forever has a damn good story that we heard was an idea from director and storywriter Antoinette Jadaone.

As the movie plumbs through the present and the past of the main character, you see a movie imitating life and vice versa.

Ethan realizes that his conversation with his loved one was copied word for word from his past love encounters.

TJ Trinidad is one hell of a devil in Buy Now, Die Later

The film has excerpts from films written by Mia and through it all, we see a writer trying to be human, trying to find detachment from her writing life and her love life.

In the talk show, she confronts her past and decides the future. She will re-allow love in her life and will live with it no matter what it takes.

To be sure, the story is nothing new but Dan and Paul gave it a new twist and a new package fit for both the millennial and non- millennial crowd.

In the end, love triumphs and how Mia copes with it is another stroke of good writing.

Indeed, there is no original story in the world of romantic movies. It is how the writer and director deal with it that makes a lot of difference.

For this kind of creative collaboration, #Walang Forever was rated A by the Cinema Evaluation Board.

* * *

Buy Now, Die Later is another fairly good entry in the MMFF and there is a lot in it that will keep millennial screaming.

There are a lot of elements in it reminiscent of the spiritual saga of Faust and Mephistofele but in layman’s lingo, it is a film that warns you: Careful what you wish for or else suffer the consequence.

The individual stories — of Vhong as the struggling photojournalist; Alex as the aspiring star; John Lapuz as the man-hungry neighbor and Rayver as the bartender dreaming to be a big-time chef — make up the whole movie with TJ lending a commendable sinister element in his role as the dispenser of all wishes.

Indeed, TJ’s performance is one of the most satisfying, if, unifying elements of this film with director Randolph Longjas giving it his best. There are moments when you thought the horror film had turned into comedy but you quickly realize the nature of the character called for it.

If there is one lesson this film can impart, it is to be happy with what you have and don’t even attempt to sell your soul to the devil.

Again, TJ is one hell of a devil in this horror film.

#Walang Forever and Buy Now, Die Later are now showing in cinemas.

Albert: Season not the same without Liezl FUNFARE By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star) | Updated December 30, 2015 - 12:00am 0 0 googleplus0 0

Back then, Albert Martinez and his late wife Liezl would spend the Christmas season with their children Alyanna, Alfonso and Alyssa the traditional way just like any Filipino family

Unlike in the past, Albert Martinez and his children spent Christmas this year differently. You know why. His wife Liezl is gone.

“During past Christmases,” Albert told Funfare, “it was Liezl who fixed the house and prepared the dinner. Parang spectator lang ako, parang guest lang ako. Now, it’s all me and the kids. We celebrated with our house staff. We missed Liezl’s touch.”

For the past few years, Albert recalled that he and Liezl, together with their children (Alyanna, 30; Alfonso, 29; and Alyssa, 23), would spend noche buena at the house of Tonyboy Cojuangco and Gretchen Barretto.

The feeling was not the same.”

Neither was Albert in the mood to buy gifts for his children.

“I just gave them cash so they buy whatever they wanted.”

Liezl’s absence was felt even more intensely when Albert heard Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas on the radio, Liezl’s favorite Christmas song.

We knew that Liezl was with us.”

It was Albert’s first Christmas without Liezl (who lost her battle with cancer last March 14) and his last Christmas with Alyanna as a single girl. Alyanna is getting married to her boyfriend, banker/fashion photographer Roy Macam, next year. The sweethearts began going steady after they met (and matched) at work. Roy proposed to Alyanna recently.

“He did it during their trip to Mt. Everest,” said Albert who first met his future son-in-law in 2007. “Not at the peak but at the base. I saw the video of his proposal. Roy surprised Alyanna who didn’t have any idea. Lumuhod si Roy and offered Alyanna an engagement ring, saying, ‘Will you marry me?’ Alyanna screamed, ‘YES!!!!’ So,” Albert added with a laugh, “wala nang atrasan, hindi ko na mababawi ang anak ko.”

The sweethearts want to get married in Rome and Albert advised them to have it after July because his contract with ABS-CBN (for the teleseryes FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano and All Of Me) is expiring around that time. Both are on extended run.

Teased that his two other children might beat him to the altar, Albert conceded, “To be honest, I’m not even thinking of that; it doesn’t cross my mind. Walang makaka-match kay Liezl. Mahirap makakita ng katulad ni Liezl; mahirap to fill her shoes.”

Albert described 2015 as a bittersweet year.

This year, although Liezl has been gone for nine months, Albert and his children said that they felt her presence at home. ‘I cried when I heard Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,’ says Albert. ‘It was Liezl’s favorite Christmas song.’

“The first six months were the saddest in my life,” was how Albert summed it up. “And the next six months were the most successful, with two high-rating shows.”

Turning 55 in April next year, Albert has learned how to adjust to the times.

“When I turned 50,” said Albert, “I told ABS-CBN management that I was ready to do much older roles.”

He doesn’t look his age, does he?

“Kasi hindi ko inaabuso ang katawan ko,” shared Albert. “It was Liezl who took good care of me. I eat healthy; I drink lots of water. I owe my nice complexion to The Belo Medical Group. I work out. I get as much sleep as I can despite my tight schedule. I shoot for Probinsyano M-W-F and All Of Me T-TH-S.”

So with that kind of schedule, how would he spend New Year’s Eve (tomorrow)?

“I will be shooting for Probinsyano on Dec. 30 (today), would you believe? Out of town as usual. We will be back in Manila by tomorrow. Maybe, traditionally, we might spend media noche with the Cojuangcos again.”

So they are close to the Cojuangcos.

“Yes, years already. Actually, it was Liezl who was close to Gretchen. Then, I became close to Tonyboy, until we became traveling partners.”

After Liezl’s first death anniversary (babang-luksa), Albert and the children will have to decide what to do with Liezl’s personal things which have remained intact, untouched.

“After their wedding,” revealed Albert, “Alyanna and Roy will settle down in the States. Alyanna has an offer from a fashion magazine. Then, I plan to have our house remodeled.”

A “must-see” Kapamilya series is “Be My Lady,” starring Janice de Belen and former Miss Earth Priscilla Meirelles.

The two ladies have actor John Estrada in common. Janice is his ex wife; Priscilla is his current. John has four kids with Janice and one with Priscilla.

“Be My Lady” features sweethearts Erich Gonzales and Daniel Matsunaga in the lead.

Erich will finally meet almost all of the members of boyfriend Daniel’s family as the Matsunagas will be flying here from Brazil for Christmas.

“Sayang nga because one of my brothers still have school,” said Daniel.

His sister Vanessa resides here with her Filipino husband, a photographer. Vanessa and Erich have had many bonding moments.

ERICH Gonzales (left) is obviously very much in love with Brapanese actor-model Daniel Matsunaga. This was evident when they were guests in "Deal or No Deal" where they they both admitted and proclaimed that yes, they are officially on as boyfriend-girlfriend. Erich was obviously flattered when Daniel proclaimed on the air proudly: "Yes! She's my girlfriend na!" The two became close to each other when they were taping for "Two Wives". Something really ignited between them that caused Erich to break up with her longtime businessman boyfriend who comes from the very wealthy Sy family of SM chain of malls. FROM JOURNAL.COM.PH

Erich and Daniel, who used to be the boyfriend of Heart Evangelista, now Mrs. Chiz Escudero, became close when they did the series “Two Wives.” “On my end, it was love at first sight nang una ko pa lamang makita si Erich,” related Daniel in fluent Tagalog. “Immediately – as the title of our series together says – I wanted her kaagad to be my lady.”

The lead role in the remake of “Tasya Fantasya” is still up for grabs.

“Actually, pinag-u-usapan pa namin,” revealed Vic del Rosario, “Hard to follow ang naging success ng two versions nito.

“The first one, a movie in 1994, had Kris Aquino playing the title role.

“The movie, directed by Carlo J. Caparas, who also authored the comics novel, was a super success.

“Successful din sa rating ang ‘Tasya Fantasya’ when it was made as a GMA 7 series starring Yasmien Kurdi in the year 2006,” he further stated.

“Tasya Fantasya” and “Ang Panday” are both works of Carlo J. Caparas.

Just asking: Did we hear it right that comedienne Kiray Celis will have several kissing scenes with Derek Ramsey in their first movie together, “Love Is Blind”?

Produced by Regal Entertainment and directed by Jason Paul Laxamana, “Love Is Blind” also stars Solenn Heusaff, who is Derek’s former girlfriend.
