DECEMBER 22 -Kris Aquino (Preen) Photo courtesy of Canadian Inquirer As one of the most powerful men and most eligible bachelor in the Philippines, you’d think President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III couldsweep any woman off her feet—probably even newly crowned Miss Universe 2015 winner Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. But in the very words of Kris Aquino, “I don’t think [Pia] liked Noy.”  So, yes. Surprise, surprise. What are the chances that once in this universe, the two were actually flirting before? DECEMBER 27 -We got a former Binibining Pilipinas-World (2006) and TV host, who helped mentor Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, to dish beauty queen secrets
Whoever of you thinks being a beauty queen is easy, we need to talk. Maybe I missed the memo or I took the road less traveled because what I went through was so hard I wanted to give up a lot of times. But I had no regrets going through all of them because it made me who I am today. To those girls who want to be the next Miss Whoever, think twice.
Here are only some of the things you need to know. 1. High heels are our bestfriend Number one rule is never to get out of the room wearing flats. Since most of us Filipinos are not genetically blessed with height, high heels are our best weapon. And I am not talking about two or three inches, it has to be four to five inches, or even higher. As they say, the higher the heels, the closer to God. 2. We are not allowed to look tired  We rarely get sleep due to long nights of training and early call times. We are lucky to have two to three hours of sleep, then its straight to the makeup chair to start the day. It is a sin to look “tamlay,” you have to be always smiling and ready to wave. 3. We expect endless training From how to smile and pose to how to tilt your head to how to laugh, how to eat, and even how to sleep, everything you do, you have to be “trained” how to do it. Your nasty roommate might take a photo of you with your mouth wide open while you sleep, sooooo not beauty queen-ish. 4. We don’t trust anyone because it is a competition  Many people ask why we need to learn how to do our own hair and makeup when there are makeup artists and hair stylists hired by pageant organizations. It is because you are the only person who knows your best assets and flaws, and you are the only one who can make yourself beautiful in a way you’re comfortable with. This also includes locking our bags no matter how much we trust our roommate. A beauty queen friend of mine lost the headdress of her national costume. How it went out of her luggage and disappeared from her room still remains a mystery. READ MORE...

Kris Aquino: Why Pia Wurtzbach and Noynoy Aquino Didn’t Work

Kris Aquino (Preen) Photo courtesy of Canadian Inquirer

MANILA, DECEMBER 28, 2015 (INQUIRER) DECEMBER 22, 2015 BY JACQUELINE BOUVIER - As one of the most powerful men and most eligible bachelor in the Philippines, you’d think President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III could sweep any woman off her feet—probably even newly crowned Miss Universe 2015 winner Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

But in the very words of Kris Aquino, “I don’t think [Pia] liked Noy.”

So, yes. Surprise, surprise. What are the chances that once in this universe, the two were actually flirting before?

The big reveal happened in March at Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda’s talk show Aquino & Abunda Tonight. Pia, newly crowned as the Binibing Pilipinas 2015 winner then, went on what could be a harder question and answer portion than what her pageants could give—courtesy of Kris, herself.

When she asked Pia if they were dating, the 26-year-old beauty queen simply answered, “I know him. I talk to him, yes. He’s very fun to talk to.”

And Kris isn’t one to hold her horses and said “Please make him (President Aquino) happy, he needs it.” And yes, it turns out, Kris really did like Pia for her brother.

The ‘Queen of All Media’ told interviewers that all four First Sisters—including Ballsy, Viel, Pinky—of their approval of the beauty queen. Hey, that’s one tough panel of judges to impress.

“All of us, kaming mga sisters, from before pa, we liked her, noong naru-rumor (when it was rumored) that they were dating. She could have denied [that they were dating],” Kris said in an interview. But equally as revealing as one of the biggest plot twists in pageant history, Kris spoke her mind. “I don’t think she liked Noy.” Ouch.

“I think she entertained him but the thing is, you can tell from her character [that she’s] single-minded.

Kinailangan na [Miss Universe] angfocus ko muna (It was needed that the Miss Universe pageant was what she should focus on),” she said.

Well, now that Pia has won, will the universe’s stars finally align for the two? Or maybe PNoy needs more dating tips from Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, first. [Inquirer Entertainment]

Nandoon ba si Lolit Solis?

That was Arnold “Igan” Clavio asking on his and Ali Sotto’s DZBB Double A sa Double B program Tuesday morning, the day after the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas where host Steve Harvey committed the big booboo by announcing Miss Colombia as the winner and Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach as first runner-up, only to apologize two minutes later that there was a terrible, terrible mix-up.

Now, if you didn’t get Arnold’s joke, that simply meant that you were not born yet in 1994 when Madame Solis, everybody’s Nanay Lolit, pulled a stunt that predated Harvey’s historic slip (hehehehe!!!).

Said Pia, “After a 42-year drought, it finally reigns!” (read: rains)

Time to hear what local TV hosts have to say about Steve Harvey.

KRIS AQUINO: Fault nung nag-print ng cue card. Font was so small, and fault ng on-the-floor na head writer for not briefing clearly. Director or floor director or accounting firm should have been very close para immediate correction. I’m a Steve Harvey fan. I’ve read his books. He acts like a lady, thinks like a man and talks straight (no chaser).

JESSICA SOHO: I didn’t get to watch the live telecast because I was busy preparing macaroni salad for my program staff and news personnel. But that was really unfortunate for Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia. And the host! How could he possibly live that down??? But as a TV producer and host, I can say that these things really happen, especially when it’s LIVE. The important thing is, it was resolved and, hopefully, peacefully.

KAREN DAVILA: What happened to Steve Harvey will go down in the Miss Universe history and I would not wish it to happen to anyone. We’re all human, we make mistakes. I wonder though what happened in the four minutes, why it took so long for him and the pageant organizers to correct it. But I admire Steve for taking sole responsibility for his mistake on live TV, for apologizing, going on Twitter and even for personally speaking to the contestants right after. Shows good character.

JOEY DE LEON: Akala ko nga may “Wow Mali!” pa, eh! Well, parang traffic lights ‘yan, red (READ) muna before you GO!

MIKE ENRIQUEZ: It can happen to anyone anytime. Live hosting requires quick and sharp thinking. And most especially FOCUS from the very first second of the program to the very last. The audience deserves nothing less.

EDU MANZANO: Being a TV host myself that is always one of the greatest fears. Live hosting is much more difficult than people think. There is no take two. Mispronouncing a name, title or relevant info is a nightmare. It’s an accident waiting to happen.

JULIUS BABAO: I really find it hard to understand why it happened. The hard copy of the result was in his hand and it was even on the teleprompter. There was even a floor director to assist him with his concerns about the decision. So why announce something that was not even there? Maybe his mind was floating somewhere else or he had a crush on Miss Colombia. It was a major blunder and he would have to deal with the repercussions.

SUSAN ENRIQUEZ: Actually, what happened to Harvey was something na hindi gugustuhin ng sino mang host na mangyari sa kanyang career. I wonder what he is going through now.

PIA GUANIO: It’s human. Everyone makes mistakes. What’s important is that he owned up to it.

PAOLO BEDIONES: What happened to Steve is every pageant host’s nightmare. Announcing the wrong winner is a product of several factors, possibly including insufficient technical and dress rehearsals, inefficient communication between director and stage/floor managers and the host, lack of clarification as to how to go about the announcement and sheer excitement that may have clouded better judgment. To find fault solely with Steve is a rather unfair. But because he was the face of the pageant as the master of ceremonies, much of the blame fell on him and he did man up and admit to his mistake. It would have been avoided though if he kept asking producers questions and continuously clarified what would take place and how he should go about it. The layout as well of results was pretty confusing. Separate envelopes should have been used per title and runner-up.

What truly saddens me though is how the gaffe seems to have eclipsed what is one of our finest moments in beauty-pageant history. Pia has a wonderful story to tell about resilience and perseverance. When people said it couldn’t be done, she believed in herself enough to make her dream come true. What a person! What a human being! What a woman! Congratulations, Pia. A victory truly well deserved.

= LOLIT SOLIS: Naku, very dramatic, very human, dahil kahit pinaka-mahusay na host nagkakamali. At least unforgettable ang Miss U crown ni Pia. Love it! Taas rating kahit paulit-ulit mo pinapanood, hahaha!!!

10 things you need to know about being a beauty queen December 27, 2015 Share1 Tweet0 Share0 Email0 Share2

We got a former Binibining Pilipinas-World (2006) and TV host, who helped mentor Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, to dish beauty queen secrets

1. High heels are our bestfriend

Number one rule is never to get out of the room wearing flats. Since most of us Filipinos are not genetically blessed with height, high heels are our best weapon. And I am not talking about two or three inches, it has to be four to five inches, or even higher. As they say, the higher the heels, the closer to God.

2. We are not allowed to look tired

We rarely get sleep due to long nights of training and early call times. We are lucky to have two to three hours of sleep, then its straight to the makeup chair to start the day. It is a sin to look “tamlay,” you have to be always smiling and ready to wave.

3. We expect endless training

From how to smile and pose to how to tilt your head to how to laugh, how to eat, and even how to sleep, everything you do, you have to be “trained” how to do it. Your nasty roommate might take a photo of you with your mouth wide open while you sleep, sooooo not beauty queen-ish.

4. We don’t trust anyone because it is a competition

Many people ask why we need to learn how to do our own hair and makeup when there are makeup artists and hair stylists hired by pageant organizations.

5. When in doubt, we banat

Beauty queens have bad hair days, too, so part of our training is to do the perfect and clean hair bun. We even have to glue the back of our ears (thanks to Mighty Bond!) together so the ears will not stick out of the bun to make us look like an elf. Nothing beats puto hair.

6. We always show off our ‘S’ form

No matter what your pose is, always show the “S” form of your body. Imagine a letter “S” forming from your armpit down to your legs. That is why it is important to do training in a bikini because you get to see your body form in the mirror.

7. We have strategies planned out in order to stand out

Yes ladies, it is like going into a battle. Imagine you will be competing with a lot of girls. Miss Universe has around 70 to 80 contestants and Miss World has over 100, so we strategize so that we get noticed. Latinas are the master of this. They would stand out because of what they’re wearing or how they would treat the press.

8. We’ve perfect the smile

We have to practice a fake giggle, a laugh (with matching buka bibig), smiling using the eyes only or Pia’s now famous “deadly stare” to project. It will all depend on what will look good on you so you have to know what look you have to portray. Mine was “buka bibig,” I had the driest mouth after the pageant.

9. We study everything and I mean everything

Anything can be asked to you when you compete, from your stand on the war in Syria, to your favorite universal element that best describes you, down to what makes you cry. You have to be prepared so it helps if you practice all kinds of questions. We have to learn the language of the country where we will be competing, too. I competed in Poland and my language teacher taught me so well that he made me memorize Polish lines to throw in my answers or to people I meet. The ending? I was one of Poland’s top five favorites to win voted by the media! They follow me around to speak Polish on TV, and they really thought I know how to speak their language. Ang dami ko lang talagang baon!

10. Our motto is ‘Tiis ganda’

Your feet’s tired? Only eating Skyflakes for weeks? Your mouth is shaking from too much smiling? Suck it up! You wanted to become a beauty queen, tiisin mo, girl! (by ANNA MARIS IGPIT)

The Beauty Queen Breakdown: 10 Things To Know About Miss Universe 2015 Winner, Pia Wurtzbach - 22 December, 03.23 PM

The weekend’s most talked about event was Miss Universe 2015 in Las Vegas, and we all know why: the show's host, Steve Harvey, first announced the winner to be Miss Colombia, who was ecstatic when she received her crown and flowers. However, minutes later, Steve noticed his mistake and quickly declared Miss Philippines as the official winner of the international beauty pageant, saying, “I have to apologise. The first runner up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines."

While the huge snafu has been widely discussed and speculated about, we’re gonna put a positive focus to it, and talk about the newly crowned queen instead. Let’s celebrate Miss Philippines’ win, and find out more about Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach!

1. The winner's prize

All the hardwork is being greatly rewarded! Pia will be getting a year’s salary, a luxurious New York City apartment, and other prizes, including: a one year scholarship from the New York Film Academy College of Visual Performing Arts, a one year supply of haircare products and tools from CHI Haircare, a new custom diamond tiara and jewellery designed by D.I.C, swimwear by Yamamay, a year’s worth of skincare products from Image Skincare, dermatology and skin care services by Dr. Cheryl Thelma-Karcher, and many, many more!

2. She is of mixed heritage

As her name suggests, Pia has both European and Filipino roots. She was born in Stuttgart, Germany, to a German father and a Filipino mother. They then moved to the Philippines, and Pia grew up in Cagayan De Oro.

3. The major wardrobe mulfunction

Pia actually had a wardrobe crisis during the Miss Universe 2015 contest! Just before the preliminary round in Las Vegas, it was discovered that the initial gown she was supposed to wear didn’t fit the voluptuous beauty properly. Her team had to make an emergency call to LA-based Filipino designer Oliver Tolentino, who then provided her with suitable alternatives. Pia ended up wearing Tolentino’s red sleeveless Swarovski-encrusted gown.

4. Third time’s the charm

It took Pia three years before finally clinching the Miss Universe title. In 2013, she was first runner up in the local Binibing Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) contest, and was in the top 15 last year. “I tried very hard, I tried very hard because this is what I want,” she said.

5. Sisterly support

Pia is very close to her younger sister, who’s a part of her support system. About her sister, she said: “She’s the one who convince me to join Miss Philippines this year [making it the third attempt], and I finally got it. Thank you, Sarah!”

6. Her clique at the Miss Universe 2015 contest

A huge number of beauty queens in one spot - you’d think that the situation would be full of cat fights, but it’s not so. Pia has gotten really close to her fellow Asian queens from Malaysia, China, and Myanmar, who all share the same supervisor. “I’ve grown close to them and they’re really cool,” she answered, when asked about her best friends in the contest.

7. A sweet weakness

If there’s something Pia can’t say no to, it’s all things sweet! She would also love to try out every single ice cream flavour in the world. “I’m a sucker for sweets. I love desserts so much, I could eat them all day!” she joked.

8. Shy girl

Not all beauty queens are born being full of confidence! In fact, Pia was very shy during her younger years, and suffered from low self-esteem because her classmates often teased her about her height.

9. She really does love beauty

Pia is a contributing writer for the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s lifestyle section. She actually got the job by accident, after it was known that she loves makeup and is able to write. Since 2013, she has been writing reviews on newly launched cosmetics products.

10. She’s had her heartbroken before

Just because you’re a beauty queen, doesn’t mean everything will be a bed of roses for you. Just like all of us girls, she’s had her heart broken before. “One mistake I made before was giving all of my heart to a guy. When I fall in love, I tend to give my everything,” Pia told her fans.

Congratulations on winning the Miss Universe 2015 crown, Pia!

It’s a “new year, new me” for Ruffa Gutierrez.

For her New Year’s resolution, Ruffa plans to spend more time with her kids, and hopes “to have a successful 2016.”

As a gift to herself, Ruffa now aims to live a healthier lifestyle and will start by becoming a vegetarian. She also plans to come up with a regular exercise routine.

“Hindi na rin tayo bumabata kaya kailangan alagaan natin ’yung katawan natin,” she explained.

But there’s one problem – her sweet tooth.

“I crave for desserts pero kailangan talaga ingatan natin ’yung pag-intake natin ng mga sweets,” she said, adding, “If you go to different parties there’s always wine, or champagne, so siguro as long as you do everything in moderation kasi it’s the holidays naman, ’di ba? So kailangan mag-celebrate naman tayo.”

Ruffa will welcome the New Year in Palawan with her two daughters.

Businesswoman The 41-year-old actress has ventured into the health and wellness business. She plans to introduce the product to the public next year.

In addition, she is still busy preparing for the fourth season of “It Takes Gutz To Be A Gutierrez.”

She is also coming out with a book – following her mom’s “’Day, Hard” – under ABS-CBN Publishing and intended for release in time for Valentine’s Day.

In the book, Ruffa will share tips and pieces of advice on matters of the heart inspired by her past experiences on love and heartbreaks.

“I guess (with) every person that ’ve loved before there is always a reason; a certain fondness for that person. (I have) no regrets being with my ex because I had two kids with him,” she expressed.

Ruffa was married in 2003 to Turkish businessman Yilmaz Bektas, with whom she has two daughters, Lorin Gabriella and Venezia Loran. They separated in 2007.

She is still not thinking of settling down, though. “I’m building my empire,” she said.

Pinoy pride After 42 years, the Philippines has brought home the Miss Universe crown and as a beauty queen herself, Ruffa is proud of what Pia Wurtzbach has achieved for the country.

“Sabi ko talaga, ‘This is the time.’ Number one, napakatalino ni Pia, maganda… If the Philippines win it’s a statement and what a statement it is. We made a big statement,” she said.

She and her two girls held their breath watching the competition. Ruffa said even her boyfriend, who is currently in France, joined the Miss Universe hype.

“Every year naman tayong mga Pilipino we cheer. Every year we wake up at seven in the morning, we eat breakfast and we cheer for our candidate because these last couple of years naging malakas tayo,” she said.

She even compared the momentous event to that of a Manny Pacquiao boxing match.

“What I love about the Filipino people is you can see the support, number one, on the online voting. Masasabi ko talaga na ’pag nagmahal ang mga Pilipino talagang all out. So napakaswerte niya (Pia) na talagang minahal siya ng mga Pilipino,” she said.

At 18, Ruffa was the Philippines representative to Miss World in 1993 where emerged second runner-up.

“It was a great time for me. It opened a lot of doors for me and parang forever na ’kong Miss World sa mata ng mga tao… and I think it’s going to be the same thing for Pia,” she said.

In the meantime, Ruffa has no plans yet preparing her daughters to be beauty queens like her.

“I want them to enjoy their youth, enjoy their life. But if that opportunity comes, why not? I’ll make sure that they’ll be trained properly,” she said. (With report from Jojo P. Panaligan)
