“She can be our next Miss Universe, the 3rd Miss Universe from the Philippines,” Mikey Gatal said of the Philippines’ Miss Universe bet, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. Gatal and his friends–Andy Doria, John Serate, Dr. Emmylou Sagaral, Rey Reformina, Paulina Gonzales, Bessie Besina and Lawrence Aizon–had left Los Angeles, California on Friday to head to Las Vegas, Nevada to watch the 64th Miss Universe Pageant.
The pageant night will be held at The Axis in Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino on Dec. 20 (Monday morning, Manila time). Gatal, a medical representative, said through Viber that they searched for flights to Las Vegas a month ago to support Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. Gatal, Doria, and Serate were in the same group when they watched the Miss Universe in 2006. Gatal said Wurtzbach made jaws drop throughout the duration of the pageant. Filipino fans arrived in huge numbers as they usually do, waving Philippine flags and chanting ‘Pia! Pia!’  “Her presence is strong. We are captivated by Pia,” he told Inquirer on Viber. Wurtzbach, according to Gatal, said she felt she never left home and she felt the love of her kababayans. Gatal said Wurtzbach has the chance of winning the crown. “I believe this is Pia’s time. She is very fierce, very lovable and most of all, she very intelligent as well,” he said. For Digal, “Wurtzbach is a complete package: Beauty, grace and brains.”  Also seen at Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino were Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. chairperson Madame Stella Araneta and Filipino designer Albert Andrada who created the capiz terno in the national costume presentation.  The Philippines has two Miss Universe titles. The first was in 1969 which was won by Gloria Diaz and then in 1973, by Margie Moran. DECEMBER 20 -And so the story begins and now Harrison Ford (Han Solo) gets a little help from his friends old (Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill) and new (Adam Driver, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, among others).
Breaking box-office records when J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opened Dec. 17 in the US with $50 million, the Disney-Lucas Films movie proved to be a formidable force and Harrison Ford is in the spotlight once more. We recently interviewed the cast and here we highlight some of their thoughts on this “little movie” that they got into and some of their memorable experiences. HARRISON FORD (HAN SOLO) On whether it was hard to say yes since it involved taking risks and whether he did it for the fans or for himself. “No, I did it as usual, for myself. Because it was a very good script and it was a great use of the character. And I have a terrific director that I have long admired and been friendly with and besides that, I didn’t have a job. So it was easy and I slotted it in and I was delighted to do it. And the only reason that you might suspect that I might not be happy to do it would be on the basis of statements I made 25 years ago that I was tired of putting on that costume. But it’s like, you know, 25 years later, there it is in the back of the closet and it’s got a nice look to it, I will try it again. And I did say that I wanted Han Solo to die in the original and that wasn’t because I thought I didn’t want to play the character, but I didn’t anticipate at that point that there would ever be another film and there were only the first three but I wanted the character to have some purposeful addition to the film. So I thought it would be great if the most cynical were converted to believe in the force or the goodness of the mission of the heroic characters and would sacrifice himself and lend some gravitas to the enterprise. And George (Lucas) said no. No.” CARRIE FISHER (PRINCESS LEIA) On whether we will recognize Princess Leia after all these years. READ MORE...

“You’ll recognize me. I look melted and I look my age. Unfortunately I don’t want to look my age. I would do everything but have serious surgery for it and look like a weird fish with gills and I don’t have an upper lip which I’m sorry about but not sorry enough.”

ADAM DRIVER (KYLO REN)

On his feelings and thoughts about being a part of this incredible, huge production.

Adam Driver , John Boyega , Daisy Ridley Adam Driver , John Boyega , Daisy Ridley “It’s surreal is the general word that I’d say to describe it but also it’s hard to have a feeling about something like that, like it’s a cocktail of things I’d say. At this moment, I’m like I’ll just do this and then answer these questions then go eat something. I’ll just take it and break it up into moments and I guess that was the same thing in working on it.

I remember calling J. J. before we started kind of having that thought that you’re having of being like this is kind of not my world and it seems very big. I remember him saying we’ll break it all into moments and then we’ll solve this moment and that’ll go to this moment, then by the end hopefully we’ll have a movie. So that’s I guess how I’ve been approaching all this… I take it moment by moment and not over-think it too much, I guess.”

JOHN BOYEGA (FINN)

On his first meeting with Harrison Ford.

“I didn’t have much serious conversations with Harrison. Every time we were talking, we were just talking about nonsense and we were just bantering, cussing each other. Honestly, it was like Harrison, are you my best friend? No. I would say why and he said, I don’t like you kid.

We had banter all the time and it’s lovely. It’s Harrison and that’s how he says he really loves you okay? I understand my best friend.”

DAISY RIDLEY (REY)

On how it was behind the scenes since it is a massive movie and if she ever became mischievous on the set.

“It’s weird because people always refer to it as a big film and now I’m like oh, yeah, it is a big film but at the time it felt like a very kind of small group of people that get on really well and have a wonderful relationship and J. J. and his first Tommy are like best friends. It’s just the most wonderful, fun-filled set. Behind the scenes, it’s fun, respectful, sincere and emotional.

Mischief? I just used to steal the golf buggy and I wasn’t allowed to because I didn’t have a driver’s license so I actually wasn’t insured. So it’s kind of illegal and we had a security guard protecting me and John from people taking pictures of our costumes. There were also dance-offs. There was Funky Friday every Friday, many things.” (All photos by Ruben V. Nepales)
