MAGIC OF STAR WARS MOVIE: 'FORCE AWAKENS' RED CARPET INCLUDES STORMTROOPERS, DROIDS

DECEMBER 15 -Daisy Ridley arrives at the world premiere of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" at the TCL Chinese Theatre on Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, in Los Angeles. Ridley plays the role of Rey in the film. Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP Stormtroopers marched and droids rolled down "The Force Awakens" red carpet Monday, heralding the return of "Star Wars" after a decade-long absence from the big screen. A giant opaque tent shrouded the red carpet that was lined with Stormtrooper mannequins and neon lights that resembled giant lightsabers. Before some of the film's human stars arrived, the droid BB-8 rolled by the cameras. The soccerball-esque droid has been a popular fixture in trailers for the seventh "Star Wars" film, and it was soon joined by series mainstays C-3PO and R2-D2. Early arrivals mixed stars from the original trilogy, Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), who play with newcomers Gwendolyn Christie and Daisy Ridley. The women portray the evil Captain Phasma and Rey, two new characters who will be expected to carry the "Star Wars" franchise as it is introduced to a new generation. Disney took over a half-mile section of Hollywood Boulevard for the premiere for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," complete with fan bleachers and spotlights everywhere. The film will screen at three theaters, allowing more than 5,000 invited guests the chance to see the characters Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo reunite for the first time on the big screen since 1983's "Return of the Jedi." Security around the site was high, with metal detectors screening pedestrians and police dogs checking the area. For those without tickets to the premiere, the most they could see was the outside of the tent. "We're really disappointed because we are big Star Wars fans, and we were hoping to at least see a little of the celebrities," said Natalie Arnet, a tourist from Paris. The global rollout of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is already breaking records abroad and in presales ahead of its Thursday evening debut in the United States.
The Walt Disney Co. said Thursday the film debuted with $14.1 million from its first screenings Wednesday in 12 international markets. The largest was France, where the film earned $5.2 million. It set a one-day record in Norway and Sweden. More than $100 million in tickets have been presold in North America. The movie ticket service Fandango said it has already sold more tickets for "Force Awakens" than any movie over its entire theatrical run. Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney, sought to assure moviegoers that theaters aren't sold out. Hollis said "there are literally millions of tickets available for this weekend." DECEMBER 18 -The Star Wars’ seventh installment opens some 30 years after Jedi, with the Dark Force on the hunt for Luke Skywalker Film review: The Force Awakens
MANILA, Philippines – With a reported $200M budget, the seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise comes to us not just as a movie, but as an event of global proportions. In fact, the people at Disney may be so shrewd, that with all the licensing agreements made in connection with the film, I would not be surprised if the film is already in the black and reaping profits before the first commercial screening even happens.
Such is the mystique and excitement this commercial juggernaut of Star Wars brings to our collective psyche. And after the relative lackluster reception the prequels of Star Wars One to Three received, it made good sense to have The Force Awakens take off as a sequel to the events emanating from the sixth installment, Return of the Jedi. The Force Awakens opens some 30 years after Jedi, with the Dark Force on the hunt for Luke Skywalker, and bringing the Resistance to its knees. Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) is our new super villain who, with Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) make for the new generation of central characters. Rey is a scavenger on the desert planet Jakku, while Finn is a conscience-stricken Storm Trooper, and Poe a fighter pilot for the Resistance, who works with this film’s uber-charming droid, BB-8. And when the likes of Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca and now General Leia (Carrie Fisher) becoming part of the action, we are treated to a double dose of nostalgia coupled with brand-new protagonists and adventures. No spoiler alert here. Director J.J. Abrams displays a more than healthy respect, even reverence, for the earlier films in his approach. In fact, his peg would seem to be the fourth film, A New Hope. And one can’t blame him for going after the feel and tone of the original. In terms of story development, it is primarily about blending new elements with the original cast and premise — which results in an inordinate amount of veiled “passing of the torch,” parallelisms and coming full circle. LOS ANGELES, DECEMBER 21, 2015 (PHILSTAR) By Derrik J. Lang (Associated Press) December 15, 2015 - Stormtroopers marched and droids rolled down "The Force Awakens" red carpet Monday, heralding the return of "Star Wars" after a decade-long absence from the big screen.

Disney took over a half-mile section of Hollywood Boulevard for the premiere for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," complete with fan bleachers and spotlights everywhere. The film will screen at three theaters, allowing more than 5,000 invited guests the chance to see the characters Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo reunite for the first time on the big screen since 1983's "Return of the Jedi."

"We're really disappointed because we are big Star Wars fans, and we were hoping to at least see a little of the celebrities," said Natalie Arnet, a tourist from Paris.

"I understand the need for security," Arnet said.

But for a lifelong "Star Wars" fan, it was tough being that close to the premiere and not getting a better look. "I wanted to see the old cast members because I grew up with these films," she said.

In bleachers set up on the boulevard, some fans dressed as X-Wing pilots while others held up helmets resembling those worn by bounty hunters in the film.

Many of Hollywod's top stars will join hundreds of costumed fans at what could be the largest Hollywood premiere ever. One of the participating theaters — the iconic TCL Chinese — hosted the premiere of the original "Star Wars" in 1977.

"The Force Awakens" opens to the public Friday and some expect the film to break box office records, as it has already with presale tickets.

The last live-action "Star Wars" film was 2005's "Revenge of the Sith," which capped a prequel trilogy focusing on the story of how Skywalker's father became villain Darth Vader.

LOS ANGELES — The reaction was strong to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" at the film's world premiere in Hollywood.

Inside the TCL Chinese Theatre, the audience began cheering Monday from the moments the movie's first words appeared on screen and reacted excitedly to seeing the return of Han Solo and Chewbacca after a 32-year hiatus.

The audience also greeted newcomers, such as Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma and Daisy Ridley's Rey, with vocal enthusiasm and loudly gasped at the film's various twists and turns.

After the showing, audiences spilled out into an after-party held inside a giant tent erected on Hollywood Boulevard, where they snapped photos with Stormtroopers, lined up to build their own droid toys and noshed on salmon and short ribs.

For many of the celebrity guests in attendance, they wholeheartedly approved of director J.J. Abrams' vision for the first new live-action "Star Wars" film in a decade.

"I loved it," actor-director Zach Braff told The Associated Press immediately after the premiere. "I thought J.J. did an amazing job. My favorite part was just seeing the camaraderie between the veteran and the new cast members."

FORCE AWAKENS: HARRISON FORD AS HAN SOLO

"The Force Awakens" mixes old-school characters, such as Harrison Ford's Han Solo and Carrie Fisher's Leia Organa, with a new cast that includes John Boyega, Adam Driver and the spherical droid BB-8.

Patton Oswalt said "The Force Awakens" represented a return to what made him fall in love with "Star Wars" in the first place.

"It was a lot of fun," the actor-comedian said after watching the film inside the TCL Chinese Theatre. "I had the same feeling as when I would watch these films as a kid."

Disney screened "The Force Awakens" simultaneously at three Hollywood venues, with the cast and crew watching the film together inside the adjacent Dolby Theatre.

"It can't be said enough — not nearly enough — that none of us would be here tonight without the miraculous creation of one man," Abrams told the crowd before the film. "George Lucas, from the bottom of my heart, and behalf of everyone involved with 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens,' thank you, sir."

"The Force Awakens" will be released publicly Friday, with some box-office analysts expecting it to smash sales records. "The Force Awakens" has already broken presale ticket records, and many fans are eager to see the reunion of original trilogy characters last seen in 1983's "Return of the Jedi."

The premiere's red carpet kicked off Monday with Stormtroopers marching and droids rolling past cameras before the film's stars arrived. John Williams' soaring score played in the massive opaque tent spanning four blocks in Hollywood.

While most stars opted for chic red carpet attire, Joseph Gordon-Levitt showed up dressed as Yoda and actor-comedian Rainn Wilson dressed as a Jedi.

The celebration melded classic "Star Wars" mythology with the new generation that will carry the weight of two more sequels, spin-offs, video games, comic books, toys and other merchandise.

At one point on the red carpet, Fisher turned the microphone on her co-star, Oscar Isaac, and conducted an interview broadcast on StarWars.com that included her dropping an expletive.

Ford reflected on the impact of the film and the role that catapulted him to superstardom.

"Well, in the '70s nobody knew what to anticipate," said Ford. "Nobody had ever seen anything like it. Now we have to live up to what the first films delivered."

Abrams and "Star Wars" creator Lucas posed together for photos, and both men took time to chat with fans — some dressed as X-Wing pilots and others as new "Force Awakens" characters — before heading inside.

For those without tickets to the premiere, the most they could see was the outside of the tent.

"We're really disappointed because we are big 'Star Wars' fans, and we were hoping to at least see a little of the celebrities," said Natalie Arnet, a tourist from Paris, who attempted to catch of glimpse of attendees from behind a barricade with her family.

FILM REVIEW: The torch is passed By Philip Cu-Unjieng (The Philippine Star) | Updated December 18, 2015 - 12:00am 0 32 googleplus0 0

The Star Wars’ seventh installment opens some 30 years after Jedi, with the Dark Force on the hunt for Luke Skywalker Film review: The Force Awakens

There’s Finn as a potential younger version of the ever-quipping Solo, Poe as the new Skywalker, Rey as a spunkier, updated version of Leia, and the father-son theme that we had with Vader and Luke now represented by Han Solo and Kylo Ren.

Does this all work though? Yes, as there is a comfort zone ambiance we can enjoy, but I also felt there was predictability here, and it got me wondering about whether a more drastically novel, out-of-the-box creative storyline would have been more exciting. Having said that, there is not much to gripe about, for if one did need a peg, or starting point, what better than A New Hope.

Among the new characters in the impressive support cast, while we don’t see her face at all, I would single out Lupita Nyong’o as the pirate Maz Kanata. Given that this film firmly plants one foot in the past, I would love to see her back in the next installment, where one presumes the stories of the likes of Rey and Finn can now develop fully on their own feet.

The flight sequences and light saber encounters now seem old hat, so it is our emotional investment in the characters, and the effective immersion into the Star Wars universe and mythology that factor in as the measures for this franchise’s renewed success. Fortunately, this film managed to rate high enough on those counts — largely in part to how our curiosity is spiked by Rey’s interesting “life journey.”

On the strength of this film, the franchise has definitely “awakened” for a new generation. And it was great watching the existing fans and fervent followers shouting and clapping in delight when the likes of Han, Chewy, C-3PO and R2-D2 would appear on the screen.

And it is on.

The Philippines's bet Wurtzbach is now currently in Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States for the 64th Miss Universe pageant, to be held on December 20, Sunday (December 21, Monday morning, Philippine time) at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

The Filipina beauty queen hopes to become the country's second Miss Universe titleholder, following the wins of Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margarita Moran in 1973.

"Can't believe it's been over a week already since I arrived! Everything's been happening so fast and everyday is packed with activities," the 26-year-old beauty queen said in an Instagram post on Thursday. "Busy is always good! Good thing I'm a workaholic."

And it gets even busier. In the coming days, Pia will participate in a number of much-anticipated events such as the talent show on December 13, preview and contestant interviews on December 14 and the national costume show on December 16.

Pia is among pageant enthusiasts' favorites to enter the Miss Universe 2015 top 10, but she will face heavy competition. Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez, Miss USA Olivia Jordan, Miss India Urvashi Rautela and Miss Mexico Wendy Esparza.

There's definitely pressure for Pia to do well in the 64th Miss Universe, after Mary Jean Lastimosa failed to earn the Philippines a slot on the top 10 in the 63rd edition of the pageant earlier this year. This is apart from fellow Binibining Pilipinas Ann Colis winning the Miss Globe 2015 crown, Angelia Ong won the Miss Earth 2015 title.
