Leyte has indeed risen from the aftermath of such a calamity — now back on its feet and ready to dance to a new beat.
The world bore witness to what Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) did to almost every town in Leyte, and in its wake came the surge of foreign aid volunteers and groups, like the non-profit org All Hands, that have been doing wonders in the hard-hit region. OCTOBER 16 -KRIS AQUINO Kris Aquino Kris Aquino is back in the cast of this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry “All You Need Is Pag-ibig.” This development was confirmed by Boy Abunda on his talk show “Tonight With Boy Abunda,” Thursday. It was recently reported that Aquino had backed out of the film, which had apparently caused a strain in her relationship with Star Cinema. Citing her “tumultuous relations” and apparent apprehension presumably with her co-star Mayor Herbert Bautista, she posted on Instagram last Saturday that she bit “the hand that feeds me” and “posted my misguided feelings of hurt & directed them towards Star Cinema…” On Wednesday, however, Aquino’s Instagram post said Star Cinema creative director Kriz Gazmen had finished a “brilliant presentation.” “Thank You God for putting everything into place with a positive, #LoveLoveLove cast!” she wrote. She peppered her post with the hashtags: “what’s meant to be will always find a way,” “no negativity,” “beautiful cast” and “‘All You Need Is Pag-ibig.’” In a separate post, Aquino shared a Bible verse and expressed gratitude to sister Ballsy Aquino-Cruz; Abunda; and ABS-CBN executives Deo Edrinal, Olivia Lamasan, Malou Santos and Cory Vidanes for their “love, patience, guidance, forgiveness, understanding, compassion, open communication and the desire to foster unity.” She ended her statement with: “Thank you God for answered prayers.” Recall that the TV host-actress recently said via the photo-sharing app that she (and her sisters and brother-in-law) was supposed to “mend fences” with the film outfit Star Cinema, but was informed the meeting was cancelled as “there was no longer any need to talk.” Meanwhile, Abunda, on his show’s Oct. 15 episode, said he was present at the meeting between Aquino and the executives. THE FULL REPORT.

SEE YOU, LEYTE!

MANILA, Philippines - “It’s like seeing life happening again through music and the arts,” said Jacques Palami, almost moved to tears, as he watched more people arrive at the farm in San Miguel, Leyte — the spacious venue for the first-ever Ginsiyaman Music Festival held recently.

It was a meaningful night for Jacques, his sister Trixie and their small group of young Taclobanons who have partnered with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and AirAsia to mount the event that highlighted the condition of the province two years after Typhoon Haiyan. Leyte has indeed risen from the aftermath of such a calamity — now back on its feet and ready to dance to a new beat.

The Palami siblings, both living in Manila when the calamity struck, flew back to their hometown Tacloban with a simple mission: Help in the rehabilitation of communities and remind their fellow Warays of the many things that they still have, like music, arts and a spirit that no tragedy can ever destroy. The short interview ended in time for Rice Lucido’s set, a girl whose cool Fiona Apple-like vocals cut through the chatter, what a way to open the musical extravaganza.

Homegrown artist Rice Lucido

A string of homegrown acts sustained the melodies in her stead: Aimee Delgado and Aurora, Lady Suzette, Kulahig Kultura and Bullet Dumas — a guy who is already making waves in Manila’s indie scene and has dedicated his original composition Haiyaan, an environmental song, to fellow Waraynons. Ginsiyaman also flew in some of the country’s sought-after bands including The Strangeness, Ang Bandang Shirley, Skymarines, The Ringmaster, Pulso, Yolanda Moon and the night’s ultimate crowd-drawer, Up Dharma Down.

Though feeling a bit under the weather, Up Dharma Down frontwoman Armie Millare did not disappoint as she showcased her signature soulful voice in their hits like Oo and Tadhana.

The Ginsiyaman Music Festival volunteers

It was almost 3 a.m. when Up Dharma Down ended the concert on a thrilling note, but there was no sign of exhaustion from the mob that gathered in the middle of the lush estate — a lucid indication of the festival’s success, enough for Jacques and Trixie to assume that the (new) voice of Leyte was heard that night — loud and clear.

“I’d definitely come back. This place feels like home,” said an American volunteer during a short chat in between sets.

A lot of foreigners have actually expressed their desire to return to the province as soon as they can; the kind of desire that hopefully burns much more inside of every Filipino. And now that AirAsia conveniently flies directly to Tacloban via an Airbus A320, what excuse do you still have?

As its new tourism banner goes, “See you, Leyte!”

An exciting action-thriller in this year’s MMFF By Pablo A. Tariman (The Philippine Star) | Updated October 16, 2015 - 12:00am 2 6 googleplus0 0

Cesar Montano (with leading lady Maria Ozawa) doesn’t mind being the second choice as male lead of the 2015 MMFF entry Nilalang

MANILA, Philippines – Director Pedring Lopez is a father of two and likes to cook for his children when location shootings are not that hectic.

Proudly pointing to us his loving wife, you can sense his inborn passion as a family man. One could deduce that he keeps a few friends as well.

These few friends probably share his special passion for the moment which is filmmaking.

Director Pedring Lopez on the set of Nilalang

Talking to him in this special meeting before we watch the first teaser trailer of Nilalang, an official entry in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), Lopez says there is a need to fill the vacuum for action pictures now that hardly any action flick figures in local cinema.

Director Pedring Lopez on the set of Nilalang

The director has a special advantage because he has ample exposure in advertising work and was deep into directing music videos and commercials before he turned to feature films.

The importance of doing storyboards for every sequence of the film is to him a must as it helps him pinpoint the color that applies to every frame of the film. “The lights should not clash with the production design,” says he. “Nothing is left to chance when you do storyboards. It is a good guide on the kind of film you want to produce.”

He reveals his script has been hibernating for 10 years but he thought now was the time to execute it with the right creative team.

He recalls: “When we started with Robin Padilla in the lead role, the creative was all in place. When he backed out to attend to his wife who had a miscarriage, we had to form another creative and production team and had to work double time to find a good replacement. The role went to Cesar Montano who we realized was a perfect choice. He was abroad at that time and upon reading the script, he just said yes. He didn’t mind being the second choice.”

Montano admits: “It doesn’t really matter if I am the second or the ninth choice. What matters was that the role went to me and I tell you, the role turned out special. Truth to tell, I was amazed. I didn’t realize this new assignment will turn out this good. I really hope more filmmakers like him (Pedring Lopez) will emerge.”

Lopez notes the actor has aged beautifully and is even more in perfect shape in his early 50s.

Finding Montano’s leading lady came by accident. By chance, he came across a radio interview with Maria Ozawa who is a celebrity in Japan as an adult video actress. At first, he couldn’t believe Ozawa was in Manila. He thought the Oriental sequence of his script with samurai episodes of 15th century Japan will make Ozawa just perfect for the part.

CESAR MONTANO and Maria Ozawa

In Nilalang, Ozawa plays the part of Miyuki, the daughter of an elder Yakuza leader based in Manila.

Lopez finds the actress, who is born to a Japanese father and a French-Canadian mother, very professional that she agreed to do some difficult stunts just to look credible for the part. “She had bruises and swollen arms after some takes but she didn’t mind at all,” the director rues.

From Montano: “There was no hardship she could not hurdle. In this dusty, half-finished building where we shot some sequence, there were layers of dust all over the place. She went through her sequence just like any other professional.”

Ozawa is getting a good feel of Manila and has taken to liking Filipino food like adobo.

She says: “I could eat adobo every day and not mind it at all. What was too adventurous for me was being asked to try the balut. I thought it was a nightmare.”

For the new project, nothing was left to chance.

Lopez says the re-assembled creative team is composed of people with roots in the advertising industry. Needless to say, the film went through a regimen that goes with making a branded commercial.

Everything was studied and planned from storytelling to casting, shooting, editing and even promotions with an eye for international market.

Adds the post-production house creative director for content Rex Lopez: “We did Nilalang in an unconventional way — not to be different for the sake of being different. We did the project because we believe that today’s viewers are more discerning. Today’s moviegoers know when they are just being taken for a ride or when they are seeing a really good work. They can tell when big names are just a smokescreen for lack of depth in story and characters.”

Lopez agrees there is a need to set a new standard for Filipino films, especially in the action-horror genre.

The initial trailer of Nilalang, which was heavily applauded after the preview, is an indication of an exciting action-thriller worth watching in the coming MMFF.

The director points out Nilalang is technically his third film as he did a French film titled 408 before Binhi. Moreover, the production team is indie but the budget and look of the film are very much mainstream.

He concludes: “We, Pinoys, are one of the most creative people in the world. It’s about time our work reflected that.”

Nilalang, a joint venture of Haunted Tower Pictures, Paralux Studios and Viva Films, opens on Dec. 25.

●Vice Ganda and Coco Martin (“Beauty and the Bestie”),
●Vic Sotto and Ai-Ai de las Alas (“Romcom-in Mo Ako”),
●Kris Aquino and Herbert Bautista (“Mr. & Mrs. Split”) at ang unang tambalan nina,
●Jennylyn Mercado at JM de Guzman (”Walang Forever”).

First team-up din nina Kris at QC mayor Herbert ang “Mr.

SANGYAW FESTIVAL, DINARAYO, BINABALIK-BALIKAN

KIM AT XIAN, BALIK-TAMBALAN
