That’s her opinion. I have nothing to say about that.” This was the reply given by actress Susan Roces when asked by newsmen for her reaction to her niece Sheryl Cruz’s controversial remark regarding her daughter Grace Poe’s presidential bid. Roces, through her talent manager Dolor Guevarra, told the Inquirer they had not spoken to Cruz since she made public her opposition to her cousin running for the country’s highest post. “The only thing we know about her (Cruz) is that her talent manager, Rams David, has decided to resign. We also don’t know why,” Guevarra said. Cruz, who campaigned for Poe when the latter ran for senator in 2013, told the Inquirer in a separate interview on Tuesday that Poe’s “popularity cannot be translated to capability.” She also refused to undergo DNA testing to help determine her cousin’s parentage and, subsequently, her citizenship. The senator topped the recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations that asked Filipino respondents to name three people they believe should succeed President Benigno Aquino III.

“I’m thankful for the result of the survey,” Roces told the Inquirer at the media gathering for her latest drama series “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” on ABS-CBN. Roces added: “A mother is never prepared for anything like this. The recent turn of events caught me by surprise. But as a parent, I make my child’s interest my priority.”

Seeing how dedicated the senator is to her work, Roces said she decided to “simply pray for Grace. I will always be here for her, ready to offer any help that I can give. Right now, however, I think I will be most helpful by keeping quiet.” Roces said Poe and her family showed their support for her latest project by attending “Ang Probinsyano’s” special screening recently at the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City.

It is based on the 1997 film of the same title that starred the elder Poe. The latest version, which features Coco Martin in the lead role, will premiere on TV on Sept. 30. It also features Maja Salvador and Bela Padilla, and is codirected by Malu Sevilla and Avel Sunpongco. (mcruz@inquirer.com.ph)

Sheryl Cruz’s tell-all on her cousin Grace Poe aborted SHARES: 75.8K VIEW COMMENTS By: Nancy C. Carvajal @inquirerdotnet Philippine Daily Inquirer 01:30 AM September 23rd, 2015

GRACE POE AND COUSIN SHERYL CRUZ WHOS IS ROSEMARIE SONORA'S DAUGHTER

She’d rather not undergo any DNA testing to help determine the parentage and, subsequently, the citizenship of her first cousin, Sen. Grace Poe, TV-movie star Sheryl Cruz said on Tuesday.

Cruz showed up late for her supposed tell-all interview about her cousin at the Manila Hotel press conference of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) biopic on its founder, Felix Manalo, with organizers of the event denying knowledge of the interview.

Cruz held a separate, brief interview at the Manila Hotel’s café.

“She was advised not to attend the event anymore and not to make any interview in the vicinity of the hotel about any other topic including politics,” Legaspi said, adding that Cruz had been initially invited to the grand launch of the movie because she played “a cameo role” as one of the more than 100 performers in the movie.

It was not clear if Cruz was escorted by security out of the press con venue on the request of the movie producers, only that she was clearly unwelcome at the event.

SCENE STEALER An unidentified companion leads TV-movie star Sheryl Cruz (in black, center) out of the Manila Hotel where she was scheduled to hold a tell-all interview on her cousin Sen. Grace Poe’s presidential run in 2016 and the DNA testing meant to establish the senator’s citizenship. But Cruz, who intended to hold the interview during the grand press conference of the Iglesia ni Cristo biopic of its founder Felix Manalo, was disinvited by its organizers. They did not want the event to be dragged into politics, the movie producers said. LYN RILLON

Cruz said she was speaking up to clear the name of her mother, former actress Rosemarie Sonora, who was rumored to be the real mother of Poe, with ousted authoritarian President Ferdinand Marcos as her real father.

“(People) can (have) all these different versions of what they think happened between my mom and Marcos but I know that it is not true. (So) I am sorry, I am not willing to (undergo) a DNA test. Please spare my family from this; they are so affected by it,” Cruz said.

“Ayoko nang madamay ang nanay ko (I don’t want to drag my mother into this). She wants to keep the peace in the family. I don’t want it to appear that my mom had an affair with another man not my dad,” Cruz added.

Poe, a foundling, was adopted by movie couple Fernando Poe Jr. and Susan Roces (aka Jesusa Sonora), Rosemarie Sonora’s elder sister. Poe was reportedly found in an Iloilo church, with her umbilical cord still intact.

The presidential candidate, who renounced and later reacquired her Filipino citizenship after taking on American citizenship, is the subject of a case filed at the Senate Electoral Tribunal, questioning her citizenship and her qualification to hold public office.

A bit abrupt

Only natural-born Filipino citizens can run for election, and the case sought to prove that Poe, whose parents—and their citizenship—are unknown, might not be one.

Cruz, the daughter of 1960s stars Sonora and Ricky Belmonte had campaigned for Poe when she ran for senator in the 2013 elections, but said she was opposed to her cousin running for higher office in 2016.

“It’s a bit abrupt for her to run in 2016, and popularity cannot be translated into capability,” Cruz said in Tuesday’s interview. “She’ll make a fine president come 2022.”

Career threatened

Cruz said her being outspoken on Poe’s candidacy could threaten her movie career. Already, her manager had been forced to resign, she said.

“I am now without a manager and I can’t understand why I’m suddenly without a representative in my career,” said the 1980s star.

Cruz said she did not want to “belittle” her cousin’s capabilities, but neither did she want “to leave the country’s future to chance.”

“The lives of its citizens are not a game of chance,” she added.

Let family resolve Grace Poe-Sheryl Cruz feud, says Escudero SHARES: 1902 VIEW COMMENTS By: Leila B. Salaverria @inquirerdotnet Philippine Daily Inquirer 03:54 AM September 24th, 2015

Sen. Grace Poe and Sheryl Cruz

It’s a family matter and her family should be allowed to resolve it among themselves, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero said of the vocal opposition to Sen. Grace Poe’s presidential bid by her first cousin, TV and movie star Sheryl Cruz.
Cruz said Poe’s decision to seek the presidency next year was abrupt, and she should wait until 2022 instead.

The 1980s star also declared her refusal to undergo any DNA test to prove Poe’s parentage and consequently, her citizenship, amid rumors that they have the same mother, actress Rosemarie Sonora. Sonora is the sister of Poe’s adoptive mother Susan Roces, also an actress.

Escudero, Poe’s running mate, said the issue between Cruz and Poe should be resolved within the family without politics being used to exacerbate the conflict.
When he was in the same boat as Poe is in now, he wished that the matter had been handled by the family alone, Escudero said.

“During the time when I was in that situation, I would have wanted that any personal misunderstanding not be dragged into the noise and chaos of politics,” the senator said without elaborating.

It will be recalled that when Escudero ran for senator in 2013, he was vilified by the parents of his then girlfriend, actress Heart Evangelista, who had described him as “financially manipulating” their daughter. Evangelista’s parents also boycotted his wedding to the actress in February this year.

He and Heart’s parents have since patched things up, with the family expressing their “100-percent support” for the senator when he announced his vice presidential bid last week.

“I hope nobody would meddle or exploit this (issue) because a family is involved, and no matter how you look at it, whether it’s election season or not, it’s not right to destroy a family,” Escudero said.

Grateful for concern

Despite her cousin’s lack of support, Poe said she was grateful for her concern.
“I thank Sheryl for her opinion and concern for us. As family, we will continue to give her the love and respect she deserves,” she added.

A ‘fan sign’ interview with Maine Mendoza FUNFARE By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star) | Updated September 28, 2015 - 12:00am 469 41 googleplus0 0

Top and below: Maine Mendoza poses with a blown-up picture of Wally Bayola as Lola Nidora at a big house in New Manila, Quezon City, that served as the ‘mansion’ of Lola Nidora for the date of Maine and Alden Richards

Will I talk?

Maine Mendoza is doing her first-ever interview, three months after she broke into television initially as Yaya Dub, the nanny of Lola Nidora (Wally Bayola), and now as the love interest of Alden Richards in the Eat, Bulaga! kalyeserye which has been keeping Filipinos around the world glued to their TV sets Monday thru Saturday.

We are here at a big house at the corner of Broadway and 9th Sts. in New Manila, Quezon City which, just an hour earlier, served as Lola Nidora’s mansion where Alden and Maine (for the meantime not as Yaya Dub) were having their lunch unperturbed by nobody.

The AlDub Nationals know what happened, with Maine saying “This must be love!” not just once but twice, much to the rejoicing of the kalyeserye’s avid followers who set a new Twitter record of more than 23 million tweets (as of this writing, still counting!), breaking the previous Saturday’s 12M-plus mark. After all, Sept. 26 was declared National Pabebe Wave Day.

It’s actually The STAR’s second exclusive interview with Maine.

This Saturday, facing us as Maine Mendoza and not as Yaya Dub, the country’s phenomenal overnight star, is communicating to us through fan signs…on camera, that is (for this coming Saturday’s edition of CelebriTV, Oct. 3, 4 p.m. on GMA).

“Ang hirap ng hindi nagsasalita,” says Maine, who turned 20 last March (Alden is 22), before the cameras start rolling. But Maine needs no words. Her flexible face can, like a picture, relay a thousand words.

For the TV interview, however, Maine is in character, answering our questions through fan signs. But for The STAR, yes, she talks…and talks!

Like Alden, she keeps a hectic schedule. Alden goes home to Laguna every day and Maine to Sta. Maria, Bulacan, with her family (said to own several businesses, among them four gasoline stations).

Does she still sleep?

“I try to get as much sleep as I can,” assures the La Salle St. Benilde Culinary Arts graduate (who did her on-the-job training at a high-end restaurant in New York).

Again like that of Alden (who didn’t become as popular during his three years as a Kapuso…until he caught the world’s attention with the kalyeserye), Maine’s life drastically changed overnight, with her privacy all but gone. Through it all, she has remained level-headed, well-grounded, obliging requests for photo-ops/selfies with a smile.

“That’s what my parents have been constantly reminding me,” adds Maine, “huwag lalaki ang ulo.” Same thing Alden’s widower dad has been telling him. Are her parents as strict as Lola Nidora? “Mas strict si Lola,” laughs Maine.

On their date in last Saturday’s episode, Maine choked a bit and Alden quickly gave her a glass of water, holding her hands as he assisted her.

Wally Bayola as Rhianna, his new character in the Eat, Bulaga! kalyeserye, as the mayordoma of the mansion where Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza had their date in last Saturday’s episode

“Kilig siempre pero kinabahan,” admits Maine who has junked her initial dream to be a flight attendant, “Mas gusto ko pong mag-artista.”

Aside from Alden’s dimples, Maine says that what she likes about Alden is his eyes (which is the same thing Alden said he liked about Maine). “And his being a super gentleman.”

Asked if she has a boyfriend, Maine says, “In high school.” Now she’s fancy-free like Alden.

So is there a possibility of her and Alden becoming sweethearts in real life? May pag-asa ba si Alden kung manligaw sa kanya?

“Mayroon po!” Then she laughs and laughs.

What conditions, if any, will she impose on Alden (the way Lola Nidora makes it hard for Alden to woo Yaya Dub)?

“All he has to do is ask for my parents’ permission.”

(Postscript: Setting of Alden and Maine’s date was supposed to be the Vera-Perez’s residence at the sprawling Sampaguita Events Place, just like one of their previous dates, so a get-together for Philippine STAR columnist Danny Dolor was transferred to the events place’s second floor. But some technical problem cropped up so the set was moved somewhere else. Back to the original plan for Danny’s affair. As a bow to the National Pabebe Wave Day celebration, Danny and his guests posed for a pabebe “family picture.”)

A ‘pabebe-wave’ gathering of friends

A get-together for Danny Dolor takes on an ‘AlDub turn’ as the friends gamely pose for a ‘family picture’ making the pababe wave. The get-together, coinciding with the so-called National Pabebe Wave Day, was held at the Vera-Perez residence in Quezon City where the date of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza was supposed to be held, until some technical problem cropped up.

Those in the picture are (from left): Girlie Rodis, Baby K. Jimenez, Susan Roces, Ronald Constantino, Jaypee Victoriano, Shirley Kuan, Pat-P Daza, Anes Victoriano, Lilibeth Vera Perez-Nakpil, Danny, Dolor Guevarra, Sen. Grace Poe, Ricky Lo, Lawrence Tan, Lolit Solis, June Torrejon-Rufino, Marichu ‘Manay Ichu’ Maceda and Mother Lily.
