Angelina Jolie screens 'Unbroken' in Vatican, meets pope

TOM BROKAW INTERVIEW: Angelina Jolie discussed the upcoming movie she directed, "Unbroken," about the incredible life of former Olympic runner and legendary World War II hero, Louis Zamperini (photo at right). “This has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Jolie revealed while holding hands with Zamperini during the interview.

MANILA, JANUARY 12, 2015 (PHILSTAR) By Nicole Winfield (Associated Press) - The actress, director and U.N. special envoy added pontiff to the list on Thursday, meeting with Pope Francis briefly after screening her film "Unbroken" to some Vatican officials and ambassadors.

The Vatican said Jolie and two children were on hand at the Pontifical Academy for Sciences to screen the film, which tells the story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic track star whose B-24 bomber crashed in the Pacific during World War II. He and two crewmates survived on a raft for 47 days, only to be captured by the Japanese.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federicoo Lombardi said the film shows "positive human and spiritual values, in particular forgiveness."

Francis didn't watch the film but exchanged a few words with Jolie afterward when she was brought up to the Apostolic Palace — along with two of her children, a brother and a cast member. The meeting was arranged by the Argentine head of the pontifical academy, Monsignor Marcello Sanchez Sorondo, who is a good friend of the pope's.

Francis was just wrapping up a formal audience with a delegation of visiting Yazidis, and stopped in the gold brocaded "Throne Room" — where he typically receives visiting heads of state — to meet with Jolie and her crew.

Vatican photos of the encounter show Jolie, dressed in a demure black suit — as papal protocol requires — gently clasping Francis' hands and smiling.

Lombardi stressed that the meeting didn't constitute a formal audience per se, but rather a brief and cordial greeting in which the pope paid particular attention to Jolie and the children, giving them Vatican souvenirs.

"It all lasted just a few minutes, even though it was naturally very significant for those present," he said.

Angelina Jolie Talks Fondly Of Directing Brad Pitt in 'By The Sea'

On Wednesday, Daily Mail shared photos of the family on a trip to Rome where fans can see that Shiloh is continuing to express herself through wearing boys clothing. The eight-year-old wore slim black pants, a dark blue sweater over a white collared shirt and carried a black backpack and wore black shoes. She also wore her hair short and swept to the side.

Last week, E! News reported that 8-year-old Shiloh Jolie-Pitt attended the Unbroken premiere dressed the same as her brothers. She wore a black suit, a black tie, a long gold necklace and had her hair slicked back. Her shoes were reportedly a pair by Louis Zamperini.

Brad Pitt Steps In For Angelina Jolie After Chickenpox Breakout

IB TImes reported that back in 2008, Oprah broke the new that their then 2-year-old daughter wanted to be called John when Pitt was on the show.

"She only wants to be called John. John or Peter. So it's a Peter Pan thing," he said.

In 2010, Jolie told Vanity Fair that Shiloh likes dressing up like a boy.

"Shiloh, we feel has Montenegro style. It's how people dress there. She likes tracksuits, she likes [regular] suits. So it's a suit with a tie and a jacket and slacks, or a tracksuit. She wants to be a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys' everything. She thinks she's one of the brothers," she said.

Heart Evangelista narrates how her groom-to-be Sen. Chiz Escudero haggles over details and expenses for their February 15 wedding:

“He’s very much on top of everything.

Hands-on daw si Sen.

Simulang kuwento ni Heart, “He’s very much on top of everything.

In Response to Paris Attack, Pope Francis Prays for Victims – and Terrorists BY CHRIS MARTIN (22 HOURS AGO) | RELIGION, WORLD IJRSHAREEMAIL <> on December 8, 2013 in Rome, Italy. Getty - Franco Origlia

When a terror attack takes place somewhere in the Western world, several types of responses always emerge. Leaders of nations condemn the attackers. Members of the media dissect the causes and effects of the incidents. Residents of the site of the attack hold vigils or similar ceremonies to remember the victims.

And the global leader of the Catholic church prays not only for the victims, but also the people who carried out the heinous act.

Pope Francis continued this tradition in his statement about this week’s attack in Paris. Three gunmen stormed the office of a French satire magazine and killed a dozen people before escaping (one has since surrendered to authorities). Today, the Pope addressed the tragedy before his homily during daily mass at The Vatican.

Francis began by lamenting the all-too frequent occurrence of these types of horrific attacks in the world:

“The attack yesterday in Paris makes us think on so much cruelty – human cruelty – to so much terrorism, be it isolated terrorism, be it State-sponsored terrorism. But what cruelty man is capable of!” Then he turned his attention to those who perished in the attack:

“Let us pray, in this Mass, for the victims of this cruelty. So many!” But the Pope wasn’t finished.

“And we also ask for those who are cruel so that the Lord may change their heart.” When viewed through a secular lens, the Pope’s entreaties for the terrorists may seem perplexing or even offensive. However, this practice of praying for those who commit these unspeakable acts has a long and storied history in Rome – even when the Vatican itself is victimized.

In 1906, a small bomb went off near the High Altar inside St. Peter’s Cathedral during a service, which caused a panicked stampede for the exits among the worshipers in attendance. No one was injured, and the Pope himself was not in the cathedral. But according to the Australian newspaper The Age, when Pope Pius X heard that no injuries were reported in the explosion:

“…His Holiness fell on his knees, imploring mercy for the criminal who was responsible for the Anarchistic crime.” So why does the Pope pray for evildoers, even those as despicable as the Paris gunmen? Not only does it embody the Christian principle of “turning the other cheek” (as outlined in Matthew 5:39), but it also reminds mankind that we should “judge not, that ye be not judged” (Matthew 7:1), since the one true judge is God.

Of course, putting these tenets into practice is easier said than done; but by doing so today, Pope Francis showed the world why he is a beacon of hope for Christians and non-Christians alike.
