Through the ring of fire: Mayon's threat behind beauty

MANILA, SEPTEMBER 22, 2014
(PHILSTAR)
By Patricia Lourdes Viray | Updated September 16, 2014 - Ruins of the old Cagsawa church buried by the ashes from the Mayon volcano eruption in 1814 Fabulous Philippines Mt. Mayon is the Philippines’ most active volcano.

Known as the “perfect cone,” it is the main landmark of Albay and attracts a significant number of visitors every year. It is the picturesque tourist destination when not showing signs of danger.

Being a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, Mayon Volcano recorded almost 50 eruptions for the past 400 years.

Legend says that Mayon is named after Daragang Magayon (Beautiful Lady), an ancient princess.

The history of the country’s most famous volcano dates back 400 years ago when its eruption was first recorded. Let's take a look back at the timeline of the country's most famous volcano:

1616 Dutch explorer Joris van Spilbergen was circumnavigating when he witnessed Mayon’s eruption and wrote it on his log. This was the first-ever recorded eruption of the volcano.

* 1814

More than 1,200 were killed during Mayon’s most lethal eruption in February 1, 1814. Camalig, Cagsawa, Budiao and Guinobatan were affected following the eruption. Only the church tower remained standing when the whole town of Cagsawa was buried in 30 feet of ash. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, or Phivolcs, and the Province of Albay recently commemorated the 200th anniversary of the 1814 Mayon volcano eruption.

1897

The longest uninterrupted eruption of Mayon volcano lasted for seven days starting on June 23, 1897. The week-long rain of fire killed more than 400 people.

1968

About 100 eruptions occurred between April 21 and May 15, 1968. An explosion on April 27 broke the southwest crater rim allowing lava to flow down slowly. Six people were killed.

1978

Eruptions lasted from May 7 to May 22, 1978. More than 8,000 people were evacuated as lava flowed down through the 1968 summit crater breach.

1984

State volcanologists recommended the evacuation of 73,000 people in the danger zone during the September 1984 eruptions.

1993

The 1993 eruption was unexpected. The initial eruption lasted for 30 minutes, killing 68 people, mainly farmers. About 68,000 people were evacuated.

2006

More 48,000 people were evacuated during Mayon’s eruption in August 2006, while 1,266 people were killed in December 2006 in the lahar and landslides caused by typhoon "Durian."

2009

Phivolcs maintained alert level 1 in July 2009 as it observed inflation in the volcano. Alert was raised to level 4 in December 20 as 222 volcanic earthquakes were recorded the past 24 hours. Residents within the 7-kilometer Extended Danger Zone were evacuated.

2014

Alert was raised to level 3 due to "noticeable escalation of unrest” on September 15. A total of 32 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours. Phivolcs said that eruption is possible within weeks.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday night placed Mayon Volcano on alert level 3 due to a "noticeable escalation of unrest."

In its 10 p.m. bulletin, Phivolcs said the alert status means that the volcano is showing relatively high unrest and that magma is at the crater.

Hazardous eruption is also possible within weeks, the agency warned.

Philvocs said in its latest update on Tuesday morning that it recorded 32 volcanic earthquakes and 72 rock fall events in the past 24 hours.

Intensity III (bright) crater glow was also seen last night, although rain clouds prevented visual observation of the crater during the day.

Phivolcs said the rolling incandescent rockfall within the uppermost reaches of the Bonga Gully on Monday night indicates that the summit lava dome is breaching the crater in its southeastern side.

Sulfur dioxide flux was measured at an average of 611 tonnes per day on September 2 while ground deformation data showed inflationary changes in the volcano's edifice.

"All the above data indicate that the volcano is exhibiting relatively high unrest due to the movement of potentially eruptible magma," Phivolcs said.

The agency recommended the enforcement of the six-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone around the volcano and the seven-kilometer Extended Danger Zone on the southeastern flank due to the danger of rockfalls, landslides and sudden explosions or dome collapse that may generate hazardous volcanic flows.

Maricel Soriano heaves a sigh of relief with ‘Real’ ending By Isah V. Red | Sep. 15, 2014 at 06:00pm MANILA STANDARD TODAY

On its last few episodes, Maricel Soriano in Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real

THE controversial daily series Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real will end this Friday. The cast and crew are in depressed mode after more than four months of working to make the soap opera palatable enough even to the more discriminating members of the primetime TV audience.

One of its lead stars is heaving a sigh of relief, saying, “Tama na. Tama na. Ang tanga-tanga na ni Millet! (Enough already, Millet is too stupid!).”

Millet Real is one of three major characters in the series and Maricel Soriano is playing it to the hilt, making the audience at times uncomfortable and angry as the character acts like she has lost her mind over Anthony Real (Dingdong Dantes).

“I am glad it is ending,” Maricel said at the press gathering for the show’s finale at a coffee shop in Quezon City.

“It is very tiring,” she said of the character she plays. “Most of the time Millet is emotionally battered by Anthony’s indiscretion she would be crying all the time. My tear ducts are already dry.”

Mrs. Real is Soriano’s first project for the Kapuso network and it’s exceptional performance in the ratings game could nudge GMA drama executives to plan another series for her.

The actress is not closing the doors on offers the network might be planning for her, but she hopes it would be as meaty if not meatier than Mrs. Real.

* The fate of Anthony now depends on the justice system as Millet’s father filed a bigamy case against him. How Millet will take it if the judge metes out a sentence that might separate him and Anthony will be the focus of the last four nights of the series.

Sheila is off the hook, the prosecutor found no probable cause to indict her. How will she take Anthony’ fate in the hands of the judge should be an interesting piece of high drama again.

Diva Montelaba who play Sheila’s sister-in-law said during the press con, “Interesting man ang magiging ending nitong Mrs. Real. We’re on our last two days of taping, and we’re taping the most dramatic part of the show.”

Dominic Roco plays Sheila’s brother and wife of Diva’s character. “I am not happy that the show is ending, but I am glad we all made a lot of people happy and they enjoyed the show while it was running.”

Maricel Soriano is the happiest saying, “Now I can be back to my old self. Happy and not bothered by a philandering husband.” The she broke into a gleeful laughter.

* Classic rebooted

The classic tale “Ibong Adarna” is given a new spin in Gurion Entertainment’s “Ibong Adarna, The Pinoy Adventure” (opens Oct. 1). The legend is so popular that even Dolphy gave it a comic twist in “Ang Hiwaga ng Ibong Adarna” (1972).

The well-loved story of a magical bird that can sing away everyone’s troubles deserves to be retold with a new set of stars, costumes and treatment. This 2014 version is directed by Jun Urbano and top-bills Rocco Nacino, Angel Aquino, Joel Torre, Benjie Paras and Leo Martinez. “Ibong Adarna” is set to soar high again!

Here’s my tête-à-tête with lead star Rocco Nacino: If you could be a bird, what kind would you be? I’d be an eagle, so I could fly high and stay free—and be swift and dangerous at the same time. How has your concept of “Ibong Adarna” changed after shooting the flim?

“Ibong Adarna” was introduced to me when we came back to Manila after living in Singapore for 10 years. I spent hours after school taking extra classes in Filipino. So “Ibong Adarna” and I had a bad start. Our film tells the story to a younger audience in a fun and adventurous way, while remaining true to Filipino values. When the right time comes, how would you propose to Lovi Poe? Of course I will make sure to plan it way ahead… to make sure we are both ready. Charo cited

ABS-CBN president and CEO Charo Santos-Concio was recently declared Asian Media Woman of the Year by Content Asia, an information resource that covers the entertainment media industry in the Asia-Pacific region. She was cited at a gala dinner dubbed “Great Stories … and the Women who Tell Them Best.”

The splashy event was held at the Grand Hyatt Singapore on Sept. 3. Kudos Ms. Charo! Keep those interesting stories unraveling. We are all ears!

Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real bids farewell By Isah V. Red | Sep. 18, 2014 at 05:50pm

Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real stars Maricel Soriano, Dingdong Dantes, and Lovi Poe

Since June, viewers were glued to their TV screens as they followed the intriguing and relatable story of a man marrying two women and loving them both equally at the same time in Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real, topbilled by three multi-awarded artists—Primetime King Dingdong Dantes as Anthony Real; Premier Drama Actress Lovi Poe as Shiela Salazar-Real; and the Diamond Star Maricel Soriano as Millet Gonzales-Real.

Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real definitely showed that it is more than just another drama that highlighted infidelity or unfaithfulness in relationships. The series presented to the viewers the real consequences and the changes in the life of the betrayer and the betrayed—that there are no victors and everyone is affected to the point that even loved ones took sides.

* It also broke the stereotype of people involved in extra-marital affairs. Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real showed that all humans are flawed and have their own stories of love, pain and forgiveness that other people can identify with and learn from.

And now as the drama series is down to its final week, find out how Anthony will suffer the consequences and how it will affect the lives of Shiela, Millet and their respective families. Will he let go of one to keep the other, or will he end up losing both? Will Millet or Shiela stay strong and fight for their right? Or both will walk away and let go?

RUFFA AND DAUGHTERS

Because she is not getting any younger, Ruffa Gutierrez, now 41 years old, thinks she needs to consider getting married anew.

She has the permission of her daughters, Lorin and Venice. The girls, aged 11 and 10, have both accepted the fact that their parents will no longer reconcile.

Ruffa revealed that her marriage to Turkish businessman Yilmaz Bektas has been annulled. The separation, she stressed, was a mutual decision.

Asked if Yilmaz now has someone new, Ruffa replied that she has no idea. And actually doesn’t care anymore.

Actually, she added that she has lost contact with Yilmaz, Although she thinks her girls once in a while call their father.

Right now, it’s common knowledge that Ruffa has quite a number of suitors, mostly foreigners.

But funny, while she enjoys their company, she disclosed that she has no particular favorite, so to speak.

“Pero, siguro, nandiyan lang ‘yan sa tabi tabi. At naghihintay ng tamang panahon, para bulagain ka na lang,” said a close friend of hers.

“After all,” the same friend further stated, “love sometimes comes when you least expect it.”

* To which Ruffa blurted: “Amen.”

Meanwhile, did we hear it right that Kris Aquino’s most ardent suitor is reportedly a 51-year-old Chinese businessman who was once married to a daughter of a former showbiz personality?

The guy and the TV host have two sons, one of whom died in an accident.

Kris is now in her 43 and admits she wants to fall in love again and, of course, marry anew.

Going back to Ruffa, she is currently involved, she said, in the production of the new season of the reality series, “It Take Gutz To Be a Gutierrez.”

She explained that in this second season, the family has decided to invest, hoping to improve even more the show’s production value.

In the first season, they had Emmy award-winning producer Mike Carandang for their director, but, this time, they hired no less than accomplished Australian director Karen Appathural Wiggins, to be at the helm of the reality show.

Well, according to Ruffa, this second season really looks more promising. From how she looks at it, it’s really much bigger, better and bolder.

“Wiggins made sure na all of us family members discuss ourselves more, the more pressing issue we experience not just as a family but as individuals.

“Maganda ang show, if I may say so,” she further added. “Siguro, dahil nadagdagan ang original cast, na binubuo dati lamang namin ng Daddy Eddie at Mommy ko (Annabelle Rama) at nina Richard at Richard.

“In this new season, another brother of mine, Elvis, and his wife, Alexa, have been added. And most of all, my sister-in-law, Sarah Labahti, and hers and Richard’s son, Zion,” Ruffa continued.

The second season of “It Takes Gutz” will premiere on Oct. 5 and will air every Sunday on E!

Whispers that the current boyfriend of Ai Ai de las Alas is only 20 years old proved true, after all.

In fact, the guy is a classmate at the De la Salle University of Sancho, Ai Ai’s 20-year-old son.

His name is Gerald Sibayan, a friend of Sancho’s and a member of the De la Salle badminton team.

What obviously made the two click is their common love for badminton. Lately, it is the favorite sport of Ai Ai, who is turning 50 in November. And Gerald serves as her coach.

If Ai Ai had her way, she would have wanted to keep her relationship with Gerald private. But Gerald obviously felt otherwise. He was the one who posted his and Ai Ai’s photo together in his social media account, where he described her as his girlfriend.

Wonder if Ai Ai’s marriage to husband, Jed Silang, 12 years her junior, has been annulled.

Wedding bells, definitely, will ring early next year for Senator Chiz Escudero and Heart Evangelista.

Their agreed altar date is February 15, 2015, the day after Heart marks her 30th birthday.

Venue for the event is Balesin Island in Quezon Province.

That it will be the wedding of the year is a given, said someone close to Heart. How sad, however, the same person declared, that, to date, Senator Chiz has yet to reconcile with Heart’s parents, her Mommy Cecile especially.

Mrs. Ongpauco has been quite blunt and open about her extreme dislike for Senator Chiz. Last year, she accused him of being arrogant, a drunkard and disrespectful.

Caught in the middle, Heart sided with Senator Chiz.

“Kaya, for a time,” said Heart’s friend, “pati Daddy niya nagtampo sa kanya.”

But not anymore. Heart and her Daddy Rolly Ongpaoco have kissed and make-up.

This doesn’t mean, however, that he has agreed to attend her wedding and escort her to the altar.

Although affected by her dad’s decision and, of course, her mom’s, Heart’s happiness is obviously more important for her. And this, Senator Chiz appreciates.

Asked how and when he plans to reconcile with Heart’s parents, Senator Chiz was overheard saying: “That will come.

“Especially after I’ve proven to them how much I love their daughter.”
