Hayden Kho back in PH to inspire others by Michael Joe T. Delizo July 20, 2014

Hayden Kho (Photo from his Facebook account)

Hayden Kho, who made headlines lately after getting back his medical license years after he was stripped off it following a sex video mess he got involved in, has returned to the country after completing a short program at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics in UK.

As a follower of famous Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias, Kho claimed to have found “answers to most of my questions” and gained the “sense of peace and security.”

“Before, I was the person would not know what the meaning of life was (in that) I’d not know why I’m here, where I came from, where I’m going. Now, I found out what the truth is. And I can feel the transformation in my life,” he said on “The Buzz.”

Kho shared that he found God in serving the “poorest of the poor” in India. He promised to strive to be an ideal Christian and serve as inspiration to others.

* Years after being the “most hated man” in the country, Kho admitted feeling a bit pressured to be the epitome of perfection.

“I feel that every day is a struggle,” he said. “Ayoko din isipin ng mga tao na just because I found Christ, I’ll be like Christ – a perfect person. I just don’t want people to think and then I’ll fail them.”

Among other people who’ve been influenced by Kho is his ex-girlfriend Dr. Vicki Belo. He clarified, though, that they haven’t gotten back together.

“Vicky is very supportive. In fact, she is also following the path of Christ now and she’s growing spiritually. I’m very proud of her,” said he.

On the decision of the Professional Regulation Commission to reinstate him, Kho said he was surprised by it because he had already lost hope in regaining his medical license. He said that he hasn’t seen the actual papers yet except for the photographs that were sent to him by his mom.

Will Heart Evangelista be just a ‘Trophy Wife’? By Isah V. Red | Jul. 19, 2014 at 06:00pm

HEART Evangelista has always been hounded by the tabloid press on the issue of marriage with current squeeze Senator Chiz Escudero.

But, of course, the Kapuso star manages to skirt it quite affably by telling the nosy reporters that it has become part of their conversations, sometimes, but they don’t dwell on it too seriously as to make it an obsession for both of them.

Now Heart is starring in a film with a title that many think might be apt for her once she enters into a life-changing contract with her boyfriend.

Trophy Wife, that’s the title and it’s from Viva Films and MVP Entertainment.

Will she be Escudero’s trophy wife, especially now that speculations are rife about the senator’s political pans in 2016? Evangelista squirms at the thought.

* In the movie, she joins former real-life sweethearts Cristine Reyes and Derek Ramsay who, according to the film’s production people say, will sizzle as a pair on the big screen once again with their box-office-tested erotic pairing.

John Estrada is also in the film under the able direction of box-office director Andoy Ranay.

Trophy Wife’s co-star Derek Ramsay and Cristine Reyes

Reyes and Ramsey previously titillated moviegoers in A Secret Affair, with another Viva prized actress Anne Curtis.

Trophy Wife, a scorching tale of love and revenge, is set to open in theaters nationwide on July 30.

The movie’s trailer, released just two week ago by Viva and MVP, has scored over a million hits on YouTube alone.

Heart and Cristine’s much-talked about confrontation scenes have gone-viral on social media, especially since the former is doing these steamy kind of scenes for the first time in her career.

Everybody’s Papa Piolo CONVERSATIONS By Ricky Lo (The Philippine Star) | Updated July 20, 2014 - 12:00am 33 0 googleplus0 0

‘My son Iñigo is a better version of me. I see everything of me in him. Getting married? Why not, I don’t want to grow old alone. The girl might just be somewhere nearby, who knows? Pero sana hindi showbiz para hindi kami nagkla-clash.’

When you say Papa, you don’t mean anybody but him — Piolo Pascual. Everybody’s Papa Piolo, more so to his (so far) only son Iñigo who is joining him as a brand ambassador for Sun Life of Canada (Philippines), Inc., officially marking the 16-year-old boy’s entry into the limelight.

Father and son will lead Sun Life’s new Brighter Life campaign that promotes the importance of raising a financially-prepared generation. According to Sun Life Chief Marketing Officer Mylene Lopa, the company aims to emphasize that it is the responsibility of the older generation to educate the youth about managing finances.

“Piolo and Iñigo are perfect for this campaign because they not only understand what it is we’re trying to promote, but they actually practice it in real life,” she said.

A long time endorser of Sun Life, Piolo has always been an advocate of financial literacy, having been raised by a mom who instilled in him early on the value of good money habits. This is a lesson that Piolo would like to pass on to Iñigo, and help spread among Filipinos through Sun Life’s Brighter Life campaign.

During the following Conversation at the World Trade Center where Sun Life was holding an annual big event, Piolo apologized that Iñigo couldn’t be around, although he was just nearby (at The Sofitel) busy rehearsing his number for a concert scheduled that night.

* Piolo was wearing his hair long for his role as “a man who doesn’t care (but who eventually changes for the better)” in the forthcoming ABS-CBN soap Hawak Kamay, with Nikki Gil, Iza Calzado and four kid stars.

Is it true that you wanted to quit showbiz?

“Yes, it’s true!”

Why?

“Sabi nga nila, I wanted to smell the flowers; I wanted to have more time for other things. I wanted to be able to say that I own my time. Not that I’m not grateful, it’s just that I was so tied up with work that I couldn’t anymore do what I wanted to do, like taking a month-long vacation, spending more time with Iñigo and doing things that any normal person is doing.”

Do you feel restricted by your contract?

“Not necessarily restricted but limited…na hindi ako makatulog ng maayos because I have to be on the set first thing in the morning, pack up very late. I don’t want to say that I was burned out, but that seemed to be what happened. You know, I’ve been working since I was 15, for more than half of my life. Let’s put it this way: Masyado kong minahal ang trabaho ko na nakalimutan ko ang sarili ko.”

What were some of the things that you realized you had missed doing?

“Being normal…being able to manage my own time. I love doing triathlons, I love swimming; I love riding, biking, running, going to different places. I wanted to travel for a year.”

You could have gone “on leave” for a year and done that.

“Yeah, but it’s never enough. In the last five years of my career, all I could spend was vacation for one week, for two weeks, and that wasn’t enough. Parang gusto kong sabihin, ‘Wait, pahinga muna ako and I’ll tell you when I can work.’ But that’s not how it happens here. Once you sign a contract, you have no choice but to work. I’m not saying that it’s unfair pero ‘yun ang pinasukan natin, eh.”

But you were not disappointed or disgusted with what was happening in the business?

“It’s all part of the deal. Everything has pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages. It’s all part of the package. But I have no regrets, huh! All the more that I should be grateful for all the things that have come my way because I never thought that I’d get this far. When I did Lagarista (a film directed by Mel Chionglo, with Janna Victoria as leading lady) 16 years ago, did I think that I’d get this far? No! I gave myself five years, but look where I am now. I’m humbled by all the achievements that I’ve made, to the point na na-over-shadowed na ‘yung bad things na nangyari sa akin.”

Like what bad things?

“You know, kapag hindi nag-hit ang pelikula mo…kapag tinira ka dito, kapag hindi maganda ang reception sa’yo doon…Part of anybody’s career. But you wake up the next day knowing that you still have to move, that you still have a life to live. You cannot dwell on the past; why dwell on something that has already happened?”

What made you change your mind about quitting?

“Practical reasons, I guess.”

Was it a factor that Starting Over Again, your movie with Toni Gonzaga, turned out to be a blockbuster?

“The truth is that after Starting Over Again, I didn’t want to renew my contract. I told myself that that movie was going to be my swan song. The movie was shot in February and my contract was going to expire in May. They were rushing my soap, Hawak Kamay, para pumirma ako ng bagong kontrata. But they knew that I wanted to quit, that I wasn’t really keen on signing again. But I said, ‘Okay, what’s two years?’ I’ll be 39 by then, nasa window pa rin ng pag-aasawa.”

What do you consider the high points and low points in your 22 years in the business?

“I would say that Dekada ’70 was one of the highest points because I got the trophies from all the award-giving bodies. It got me recognized and elevated as an actor. One of the low points was, of course, the continued steady downhill ng reception ng movies ko. Pababa nang pababa ang gross ng movies ko so I said, baka hindi na ako gusto ng tao. I didn’t take it against anybody because at the end of the day, it’s still business and they have to make money out of you, and vice-versa. That’s the business. You can’t always be at the top.”

Had you quit, what would you have done?

“First thing I’d do, go on a vacation. I’d be away for a year. Then, I’d spend more time with my son. That would mean staying longer in the States and attending to all the businesses that I have put up. Kailangan hands-on, eh. Ang dami kong pinasukang business na hindi ko maasikaso because I’m stuck with showbiz work. Naawa ako sa mga kapatid ko (one brother and four sisters) na hindi ko nabibigyan ng oras.”

What to you is the best and worst about showbiz?

“The best is, let’s face it, money. Sa akin, hindi best ‘yung fame. I see fame as part of the deal, of being famous. When you become famous, you can demand for a higher pay. Being famous also has its minus side; people are gonna throw things at you. Being famous means you cannot eat in any restaurant you want to eat in, hindi ka makapasyal, hindi na makalabas ng bahay na walang tumitingin at walang tumi-take ng photo mo. There are so many things that I cannot do in the Philippines, like tumakbo ng naka-hubad, topless, mag-bike na hindi napapansin. Not that I resent it. But if I had it my way, I don’t mind not being famous, being on the sidelines.”

What’s the downside of being drop-dead gorgeous?

“There are more benefits because I am able to use my looks to be where I am now. ‘Yan ang naging investment ko, eh; pangalawa na lang ‘yung talent because kung wala kang looks, hindi ka naman bibigyan ng break, di ba? The worst part? I think you know.”

You let Iñigo do an indie movie (Relaks, It’s Just Pag-ibig, directed by Bb. Joyce Bernal, showing in September) which you yourself is co-producing. Does it mean you’re encouraging him to be in showbiz?

“Actually, I’m trying to delay it. I’ve been discouraging him. My condition with him is for him to finish high school. Two more years and he’ll be graduating na. He’s turning 17. As soon as he finishes high school, he’s on his own.”

Any pieces of advice to Iñigo now that he is taking his first step into showbiz?

“Uhm, just stay humble, always respect the elderly, always respect people’s time, always be professional and be disciplined, and never abuse the power.”

What about dealing with intrigues and gossip?

“I told him that he has to know himself more than what anybody would tell him.”

How does he himself deal with gossip, especially the nasty, below-the-belt kind?

“You know, I don’t take it against anyone because everyone is entitled to his own opinion. My regret is that people (who gossip against him) don’t know me personally. How I wish na bago sila magsalita, kilalanin muna nila ang tao so that they don’t hurt somebody. I know na ganoon ang takbo ng showbiz pero sana kilalanin mo ‘yung tao bago mo pagsalitaan ng masama. I know myself better and more than anybody else does. Kung pumatol ako, magkakasala lang ako. I eat well, I sleep well because I know wala akong tinatapakang tao, I have a good relationship with my friends, I have peace of mind. And I’m okay with my son who told me, ‘Dad, you can’t quit yet because I still want to see you on TV.’ One of the reasons why I wanted to quit is, as I have said, to spend more time with Iñigo before he becomes an adult.”

Iñigo is based in the US and that makes you a long-distance father. How is it?

“’Yan nga ang masakit, eh — being an absentee father. Definitely, I don’t spoil him, I don’t shower him with gifts. We talk, I scold him when I need to, especially lately. At this stage of his life, I, and his mom, have become more strict with him. He’s a bit more mature now so I can level up with him. He can understand me better now.”

While other actors hide their being unwed fathers, you did the opposite by making public your being one early on. Why?

“I did it in 2001 when I was with Judy Ann (Santos, now Mrs. Ryan Agoncillo). Iñigo was four years old at that time. It’s his birthright, it’s his right to have that identity, so why should I deny him that, why should I hide him?”

Weren’t you worried that it might ruin your career?

“I didn’t mind, I didn’t care. Wala akong pakialam. Basta I didn’t want Iñigo to grow up at susumbatan akong hindi ko ibinigay sa kanya ang kanyang karapatan.”

Describe Iñigo’s mom without naming her.

“She’s very simple. She loves my son so much. She takes good care of him. Iñigo wouldn’t have grown up decently kung hindi siya inalagaan ng mabuti ng mom niya. Early on, she nurtured Iñigo on the right values. I appreciate that she prefers to stay in the sideline, never siyang nag-take advantage ng popularity ko.”

What of yourself do you see in Iñigo?

“Everything of me I see in him. He’s a better version of me, though, because of his early exposure and experience in theater. He has done three musicals, one of them Hairspray, and he has been nominated Best Actor in California. He’s a member of a band. At 15, nanginginig pa ako when put in front of the camera. (He started in German “Kuya Germs” Moreno’s defunct GMA show That’s Entertainment using the name PJ Pascual. —RFL). He’s a go-getter.”

By the way, how soon will you get married?

“I will know within the next two years. I don’t want to grow old alone. I want to be able to enjoy the fruits of my hard work and share them with my kids. I want to have four more children.”

The lucky girl could be somewhere around, somewhere nearby.

(Shrugging and smiling) “I don’t know yet where she is but I want to see her soon. I want to become friends with her. She could be somebody I have met before, who knows, or somebody I had a relationship with; I don’t know. Hindi mo masabi pero sana hindi showbiz para hindi kami nagkla-clash. As I said, nasa window pa rin ako ng pag-aasawa.”
