JAMIE Herrell has won several gold medals.

MANILA, MAY 9, 2014 (INQUIRER) By Armin Adina - Cebu City’s Jamie Herrell bolstered her lead in the 2014 Miss Philippines-Earth tilt by snagging the gold in the swimsuit competition held last week at Solaire Resort & Casino in Parañaque City.

This is the second swimsuit contest that the Cebuana won; the first was held in Hamilo Coast last month. She has three othergolds: one for the resort wear competition held at the PonteFino Hotel in Batangas City; another for being “Darling of the Press”; and yet another for the cultural costume competition held in Vigan last Tuesday.

Herrell was also one of 10 contestants proclaimed “Miss Hana Shampoo,” and was declared Miss Advance Placenta by pageant sponsor Psalmstre.

CRYSTAL Star Aberasturi was third in the swimsuit competition.

Herrell told the Inquirer that the triumphs came as a surprise, because she didn’t plan on joining this year.

“I was set to do it next year because I’m a scholar at the International Academy of Film and Television. But I was given time off,” she said.

Herrell noted that Cebuanas have been doing well in local and international pageants because “we have the winners’ drive.”

Fellow Cebuana Hannah Marie Caayon of Mandaue City had another explanation: “Cebuanas are beautiful, and Cebu is more immersed in Filipino culture than Metro Manila. That helps produce a unique type of contestant.”

A third Cebuana achiever is Liloan’s Crystal Star Aberasturi, also a Miss Hana pick. She is also Miss PonteFino Residences and Miss Ysa Clinic.

HANNAH Marie Caayon says Cebu produces unique contestants.

The 2014 Miss Philippines-Earth coronation night will be held at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday, 7 p.m. It will be aired on ABS-CBN on the same evening.

KC Concepcion in NYC for studies, not to hide rumored pregnancy By Elton Lugay TheFilAm.net/ INQUIRER.net May 7, 2014 | 1:15 am

NEW YORK, New York – Actress KC Concepcion is done being in the shadow of her famous parents.

She recently won two acting awards, making her an actress in the eyes of many and no longer just the love child of one-time heartthrob couple Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion.

“How many of us, children of actors, have achieved such honor?” KC wondered aloud during an interview with The FilAm.

“The award is a big thing for me because it’s so hard for us having parents who are into showbiz as well. Oftentimes people would see us as no different from our parents.”

Concepcion won Best Actress at the 30th Star Awards for Movies for her role as a stripper in “Boy Golden: Shoot to Kill, The Arturo Porcuna Story;” and Best Drama Supporting Actress at the 27th PMPC Star Awards for Television for the series “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala.”

She learned about the Star Award from a friend’s text message showing a smiley face and three hearts. She couldn’t believe the news at first. It only sank in when her mother’s text message followed soon after.

“It’s an R-18 movie based on a true story, based on real people” she said of “Boy Golden.”

She accepted the role because of her faith in director Chito Rono, and it was a role that brought her out of her comfort zone.

“I’ve experienced firsthand certain roles that didn’t interest me at first yet gave me the chance to shine and get recognized.” “Boy Golden” was one of them.

KC is currently in New York — and will be in the city for a while — to study business and acting, and so was not able to receive her acting award.

Rumors flew fast that she was in New York to hide an unplanned pregnancy. She denied it, insisting she needed a long break from her highly demanding schedule.

“After doing ‘Boy Golden,’ I had pneumonia,” she said. “The doctors here said run-down yung katawan ko.”

KC said she had a back-to-back schedule, from hosting “The X Factor Philippines” to filming “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala” soap with Judy Santos and Sam Milby and then “Boy Golden.” Her work schedule overlapped, and before she knew it, her body just shut down.

“I just realized my body was screaming out for a bit of rest and probably it came to a point that I would really want to explore (the city),” she said. “I’ve always been the type to need rest cause it’s so difficult to do that in the Philippines. It’s a different world out there and everyone knows your whereabouts.”

She is so happy to be in New York and to be able to live on her own. “Here, I can read three books in one week. In the Philippines, I had no time to read and just used the time to sleep.”

“Paulo Avelino is not my boyfriend, yet.”

She has relatives in L.A., but her parents taught her to be independent and to not appear to be “too needy.”

“This is a good break kasi sa Philippines you needed a chaperone just to go to the bathroom.”

Actually, she will be shuttling between New York and Manila because of her many commitments. “I will be flying back and forth for work, been doing a lot of shoots for my endorsements and guestings because I still have many contracts that I need to fulfill.”

She is thankful to ABS-CBN and Viva for giving her a chance to pursue her studies.

An interview with KC – done over a period of two hours — is never complete without questions on love and relationship.
“Paulo Avelino is not my boyfriend yet,” she declared, setting the record straight. “I’m not committing to anyone right now. I have no commitments to anyone.”

After a tumultuous breakup with Piolo Pascual over a widely rumored gay past, KC is very cautious about becoming romantically involved.

“It’s not my priority right now. But it will be soon enough. Honest naman ako eh, the people involved know my state of mind right now and my limitations,” she said, intentionally sounding vague and elusive.

“I don’t wanna be hurt , it’s so tiring. I’m taking it slow. Talagang very slow. I’m very careful with my heart right now.

I’m being good to myself, welcoming enough but also putting limits because I gave too much before, now it’s time to take care of me.”

She avoided talking about Piolo. “I’d rather keep that to myself,” she said.

For now, she is taking it easy and taking in as much as she can of New York.

“Apart from my classes, I enjoy the household chores. I do my laundry and spend some bonding time with my friends here like Ate Ritz Brinas.

“I’m lucky to have friends here who (no matter how busy they are) are always there to give me company when I want to go out.

“Sometimes, I play tourist, but I’ve always been a traveler rather than a tourist.

“Other times I go to nearby cities like Toronto and spend some time with friends over there. Throw a party in my balcony para mag-barbecue. Other times mag museum, manood ng concerts.

“But I like the fact that everything happens here in New York City, the center of everything.

“You can pay through apps here – you just point your smart phone. If you want to eat oysters, there’s an app for that too.”

KC is an avowed pescatarian and eats only fish and some seafood.

LJ Reyes: Paulo is a good dad to our son By Marinel R. Cruz Philippine Daily Inquirer August 1, 2013 | 6:38 pm

“HE MAKES time for his son; that’s the most important thing for me.”

“He is a good dad. I have only good things to say about him in that regard,” said actress LJ Reyes of Paulo Avelino, father of her 3-year-old son Ethan Akio.

The actress made this declaration amid rumors that they had broken up and that Paulo recently left their home. It doesn’t help that when show biz reporters ask Paulo, he consistently refuses to discuss the status of their relationship.

“He makes time for his son; I appreciate that. For me, that is the most important thing,” LJ told the Inquirer. Asked about her love life, the 25-year-old actress replied, “I’m happy, and I intend to keep it that way. I’d like people close to me to be happy, too.”

Smart kid

LJ admitted that she felt bad about leaving her son home to go to work. She is a regular performer in GMA 7’s weekly variety show “Sunday All Stars” and is currently preparing for a primetime drama series airing soon.

“I try to make Aki (her son’s nickname) understand my job. Though he just turned 3, I explain things to him the way I talk to a grownup. I don’t do baby talk. He’s a very smart kid,” the actress said. “When he sees me getting dressed, he asks, ‘Work ka, Mommy?’ He likes seeing me dancing on SAS!”

This early, LJ can see that Aki is talented. “Sobrang bibo n’ya,” she said. “Sometimes, he pretends to cry when he sees [me or Paulo] crying on television. I don’t see him joining show biz anytime soon, but I’ll support him, should he realize it’s what he wants.”

LJ’s last Kapuso drama series was “Aso ni San Roque” last year. “I’m excited to be included in this new soap, but I’m not yet allowed to divulge details,” she said. “I’m preparing for it by attending workshops. I’m already feeling the pressure, but I’m sure it’s good, if only because this motivates me to do better.”

Migraines

Asked how she’s able to balance work and motherhood, LJ said, “It was hard to adjust but I can manage now. I just make sure to eat healthy food and work out regularly at the gym. I’ve been suffering from migraines lately because of lack of sleep, but generally, I’m okay. I understand that something’s got to give.”

Why Filipinos love The Singing Bee KAPAMILYA DAY By Kane Errol Choa (The Philippine Star) | Updated May 8, 2014 - 12:00am 8 0 googleplus0 0

Hosts Roderick Paulate and Amy Perez

When the clock strikes 11 a.m. and a lively beat starts playing on TV, it is the start of ABS-CBN’s popular morning musical game show The Singing Bee, hosted by the well-loved tandem of Roderick “Dick” Paulate and Amy Perez.

“Some people said, ‘We’re happy to see you reunited.’ That feedback was really heartwarming,” shared Dick referring to their avid fans.

“They also said they missed our contagious laugh and comic bonding on screen,” added Amy.

It has been about eight years since Dick and Amy last worked together on TV. So when they were offered the project, the real-life best friends did not hesitate in accepting it.

“I called it a homecoming,” said Dick.

“It seemed that Mamang, Kuya Dick’s mom, is watching over us from heaven and even made a way for us to be together again,” added Amy.

Dick and Amy bring their signature entertaining hosting style to The Singing Bee, a fun and exciting, family-oriented game show where the players must know the exact lyrics of the given songs. A live band called the Bandble Bee, headed by musical director Mel Villena, plays every tune as sexy dancers, the Honeybees, groove to it.

Initially aired every Saturday afternoon, The Singing Bee moved to a weekday morning timeslot, from Mondays to Fridays at 11 a.m. starting February this year to give Filipinos a daily dose of fun and thrill.

The show has consistently landed in the Top 15 most-watched programs on weekdays nationwide, based on Kantar Media data. Its average national TV ratings stood at 15.9 percent in March compared to its rival show, Tunay na Buhay, which averaged only 6.5 percent, according to Kantar Media data.

“People can see that the hosts and contestants are having fun, while the studio audience and TV viewers enjoy the sing-along and guessing game. It is very interactive,” explained Dick.

Get your own, Amy said the show is different from other contests that usually require singing prowess. “It’s not a problem if your voice sounds like a breaking glass. Even non-singers can win up to a million as long as they know the lyrics,” she said.

Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago holds the record of being the longest reigning champion in the current season. On her fourth week as defending champion, Bea lost to KZ Tandingan, who won the P1M prize.

To date, the show has produced two celebrity millionaires — actress-singer Sheryl Cruz and KZ.

To win the P1M jackpot prize, a contestant must correctly guess the missing lyrics of four out of seven songs in the Final Countdown round.

Amy attributed the success of The Singing Bee to Filipinos’ passion and penchant for singing.

“We are good in singing and we love to sing. Sometimes, when we have problems, we find comfort and relief in singing. So to be happy, let’s sing and have less stress in life,” said Amy.

“The people will really like the show because it is fun. And we are music lovers. Even kids will enjoy. It is synonymous with fun. No Filipino will dislike The Singing Bee or dislike singing. We all love to sing and have fun,” added Dick.
